I've updated Spitzer's spreadsheet as much as I could; I hadn't written down doses.
Edited to add: data from a new glucometer; the old one's battery died and I haven't gotten all the data off it yet.

I did a curve today and the only thing that dropped his glucose was just under 0.25 of R in the morning because he was almost to 500. I wanted it to come down at least a bit and Lantus has NOT been working for him. Notice that in 2 hours, the 0.25 of R brought him down 165 points. My decision rule right now is that if he is over 400, I will add that bit of R. The suddeness of the drop is part of the reason we don't normally use R ; you could drop the kitty into a hypo very, very easily and the drop happens so fast it can really stress the body. Plus, R only lasts a very short time.

The vet reviewed the Levemir info I sent her and then proposed Prozinc instead. I'm game to try anything, so after reading up on it, called and gave the go ahead. It works differently from Lantus and would, if necessary, allow me to increase when I test and his higher than usual.

BJ,

Good luck I hope the Prozinc works better for Spitzer.
I hope he gets to feeling better soon.

Maybe Prozinc will be a better choice. I don't know that I could conclude that Lantus wasn't working, though. You'd have needed to be getting more spot checks to accurately assess the effectiveness of a dose. Given the need for consistency with Lantus dosing and the need to evaluate a dose every 6 cycles, it's hard to know if you were giving the same dose. Likewise, holding a dose for too long can result in glucose toxicity. Good luck with Prozinc.

Since I am not a stay at home 'mom', am engaged in numerous activities outside the home, and have several problematic health issues which impede my ability to test every 2 hours for a curve every week, Lantus does not work for me, and therefore, does not work for my cat.

For those of you who can manage to do it, great. We lead different lives and therefore, must find different solutions.
