Im at a friends house teaching her how to test her cat at his number came up 36 at +4. Double checked still at 36. hes acting normal - gave him some high carb wet. Checked again in 15 minutes and still only 34. gave some more food and checked in another 15 still only 34. gave a bit more food...

How long till the food starts to work?? Should I put some honey on gums if he is still walking around fine or wait for the food to set in??

He is currently on dry food and 4 units bid - she is changing to all canned tommorow thats why I am here teaching her how to test...

Thanks

what kind of insulin is she using?
I would think that his nadir could range from +4 to +6.... does he test easy?

He is on Prozinc. No idea when his nadir is because this is the first time he has been home tested...

He actually has been really easy - had to double poke a couple times but other than that hes been fine

Food should show up in 30-60 minutes.
if switching to all canned lo carb tomorrow, definitely want to test and reduce dose

I think if his number isn't rising in 15 minutes, put a little karo on his gums. The food can take a while and you want him out of those low numbers.

So glad she started testing and glad you helped her!

In between tests, you could help her set up an FDMB account...

Good idea Carl.

If he keeps going lower or stays the same, I would try a drop or two of karo. Come on kitty, get up into the 60s and 70s.
Definitely reduce the dose, especially if switching tomorrow to all wet. And test often, tomorrow, too.

If she will agree, she could start over at one unit with wet lo carb and make her way up instead of down. We have several PZI newbies on Health who started at 2+ units and now are getting low numbers and having to guess how much to reduce. Much easier and safer to go up!

Definately reduce dose, especially if changing foods...
If not going any higher I would put a little karo,
and please tell her not to shoot the bounce
How long has kitty been on 4 units...could have been low for a long time which is
why she is not coming up...please tell her to start over at 1 unit ...

thanks all - tested again and at 35 - put a bit of maple syrup on gums (thats all she had - thought it was honey - obviously she is not a cook  ).

So for tonite he is gonna be on the same diet (wet and dry mix) should 2 units be good for tonite if he has been getting 4 and it sent him hypo? He is switching over to all canned in the am and already told her to start at 1 unit and do a curve or at least a mini curve tommorow.

For today I told her to keep testing every 15 minutes till he gets to the 50's - is that correct? Anything else we should be doing??

PS - the is NOT a computer person so don't know if she will joing but I did make up a spreadsheet she can post on her fridge to record the numbers

Sounds like you are doing great. Maple syrup will work. She wants two rising tests above 50 to be sure he is going up. It may be overly cautious (but who knows what low numbers he has been throwing), I would just do one unit tonight. And only if he is above 200 and clearly rising. It will probably be high in the am but I would still do one unit then with the food change.

Be sure she understands the syrup can raise his numbers artifically. So she won't be looking at "true numbers" necessarily for the pmps. She needs to look at this like a "start over". It certainly may be that he needs more than one unit but she can always increase as the numbers guide her.

Ok I will have her go with 1 unit tonite also.

Thanks for all the info!!

I am gonna remove the 911 - just wanted to make sure I wasn't forgeting anything

Having hypoglycemic BGs can make them more sensitive to the insulin. If it were my cat, I would go down to 1U, although BGs are probably going to be high later today/tonight. Sometimes because of lows like this, the BG does not climb much and their BG stays too low to even be given insulin for the next shot. I had that happen for Gandalf after a hypo on PZI. I take it the cat is recently diagnosed diabetic? The food switch makes it doubly important that the cat does not receive too much insulin.

I hope your friend will continue to test and register for FDMB! Good catch!

Agree with one unit of the numbers are going up(if not skip tonight)
Will be more sensitive to insulin tonight

Put the 911 back on casue I'm starting to get concerned. We did the first test at 10:30 and have given him food a few times and the maple syrup and his number just now at 12:30 is at 33. Should he be going to the vet? Should he get more food? Just put more syrup on gums...

What's next??

You should at least put a call in to the vet's to see if they think you should take him in. Sometimes cats need IV sugar to get their BG up. 4U is a pretty hefty dose and prolonged hypo BGs can cause seizures and brain damage.

You might already know this, but syrup & honey effect doesnt last very long.
I would call the vet. They need to know the dose they advise is to much.

Tell your friend we are here with open arms to help her with FD. Please join she will be happy she did!
