Just got back bloodwork results from yesterday. They said all looked good, except show HIGH trig and a little low potassium.

He doesn't get that much fat. Is there anything i can do to lower the trig?

Not sure how low the potassium was. It was a phone message. Will get copy of results on Monday. Do i give him supplements or change some food?

I'm worried that the high trig mean he is prone to strokes and heart attacks??

If you have any ideas i would love to know.

THANKS!

Article in English, not vet speak: Hyperlipidemia

More technical article: Article
"In addition, soluble fiber (gums, pectins) can be added to diets to help decrease the cholesterol concentration.19 Soluble fiber interferes with the enteric absorption of bile acids and increases the hepatic use of cholesterol to synthesize bile acids.20"
Soluble fiber = Benefiber, etc. Check with vet to be sure it is OK. Some of us have added 1/4 tsp psyllium (insoluble fiber) or soluble fiber to assist with constipation issues.

In addition to keeping carbs low in the diabetic diet, you may want to aim for more protein and less fat in the diet. This can be difficult, as both fats and carbs are cheaper than proteins. Your best bet may be to use a home diet, either raw or cooked. Cat Info has a recipe, as well as much information about nutrition. Maybe start reading there and see what you think. A few of the folks here do feed raw.

In addition to adjusting food fat intake, is your vet prescribing anything?
There are some meds which help. It depends on the cause as to what the intervention is.

Also - how active is your cat? If not at all, maybe try to engage in some play sessions to help breakdown the fats and also use the insulin better.

High blood fats doesn't seem to affect the cats in the same way as humans, what it does however in blood work is obscuring in particular the calcium value.

I researched the high trig and if the cat had just ate within 4hrs of test then the trig's could be high. To get a true test it should be fasting. Well he had a huge meal 2.5 hrs before we went to the vet. SO that solves that.

As for the potassium. I'm not sure how low he was. All she said was " his potassium was a little low". He did throw up some grass the day before, but ate well all day. He was drinking a little more the last couple of days too. So this could be why he was a little low. He is very active outdoors. Well as active as he could be for a cat with bad neuro. He still can run and catch prey though. So getting a little better. His hip muscles had gotten skinny, but they are finally coming back. He still can't hop on anything, but he does look a little better. I will get a copy of the bloodwork on monday and see what him potassium level was. The last bloodwork about 6wks ago was perfect. So i will know more monday. I had when they leave messages like that and don't give you all the info.

THAnks for all the info....

Oh, he is on a half raw diet. I feed him raw 2x/day. I think i will start to turn over to 3x/day or 4x/day. Can't really afford the raw diet, but it is worth it. He loves it! We use Feline's Pride turkey, chicken and rabbit. He likes them all.
