Dr. Wood called tonight with the results of the biopsy. She said. "It is a carcinoma, but they are saying it is an adenocarcinoma. And it has infiltrated his lymphatics (I guess she biopsied a lymph node - don't remember that from the report). So there is a chance that it will spread, but maybe not before he's in trouble from the primary tumor."

I did not have time for questions (at a play about to start) and was taken a bit by surprise to have her call at 7:30 in the evening. Wish I had been able to talk to her longer and ask some questions. I have not been able to find anything on line about feline oral adenocarcinoma at all. Mostly there is info on mammary and intestinal types. It doesn't sound "better" than SCC. Unless it will respond to pred or something.

fffffffc (<--- that was Jeddie's addition)

He seems to be eating ok, but can't manage his kibble treats in the morning. He just can't hang onto them long enough to swallow. This worries me, but it was sudden after the surgery so maybe he still has swelling or minimal pain. I hope that resolves soon for at least a while. I know it will be an issue as things progress. I just hope they haven't progressed that much yet.

He is a bit more vocal than before, but now that the pain meds are done, he is more himself.

(((Sheila))) I don't know about adenocarcinoma and I am sure you found anything I could find on the Internet.

I am responding to tell you what a wonderful Mama Bean you are to Jeddie. I know how terribly worried and concerned you must be, with any number of things. It is so unfair this has happened to Jeddie; he is too young to leave the planet. I so hope that new treatment options become apparent and he can have many months, perhaps even years, with you and Beau.

Please consider calling Dr. Wood back. I am sure she will understand that you have many questions.

Hi Sheila

I'm sorry to hear about your little guy. I would consult an oncologist for info both on treatment and on palliative care. You need more than internet and word of mouth info here. Please keep us posted.

I agree with both Venita and Jess. What things I found online were years old in some cases.

ECID - so there may be options for him which there are not for other cats with the same diagnosis. Just the fact that you caught it so early may be his advantage. An oncologist would be able to determine the best course.

((((((Sheila))))))

Thanks Venita, Jess, and Vicky. Although I have had only a few hours to contemplate this, consulting with the oncologist at VSC was where I was heading. I just want as much info as I can get before I call them back.

I did ask about called her back with questions and she said absolutely, but is not in the office until Wednesday. As she is not the oncologist I may be "beyond" calling her with questions by then.

Vicky, thanks for the article links you emailed me. I will read them in a bit. I ended up searching for oral adenocarcinoma and found human references that call it salivary gland cancer so I went back to searching "feline salivary gland adencarcinoma" and got some info.

I didn't think to do that even though Dr. Wood had said adeno meant from glandular tissue. I think I forgot she said that, actually.....

Peaches had an adenocarcinoma removed in February. She had a signet ring cell adenocarcinoma that had also spread to a lymph node. From what I read and what the vet said, it is a fairly aggressive cancer that doesn't respond well to treatment. I even talked to our pathologists at work and they all said "I'm sorry to hear that". For now, she's recovered well from her surgery, has gained back 2 pounds and seems happy and healthy. We're doing 3 month checks on her to make sure we know if and when it starts coming back.

Talk to an oncologist to get the full story but I get the feeling there isn't going to be much you can do. It isn't a very good prognosis. At least Peachy's cancer wasn't in an area that impacted her quality of life so much. She was starting to block but once we got the tumor out, she did much better. We're just keeping an eye on her for now and keeping her happy and healthy for as long as possible. If the tumor comes back, we won't be doing any additional treatment.

Sheila,
Cats use their tongues differently when eating hard food pieces than soft food. They have to use their tongue to move hard food to the back of their mouths...that difference might be something he has to relearn or hurts right now.

BIG HUGE HUG!

Sheila, you know that you and Jeddie are in my thoughts and prayers. I am so glad you are getting such informative feedback from some of the experts here on FDMB. Hang in there my friend.

Unfortunately, Beau has gone after him when he has tried to get on my lap or near me and gotten "too close" to him. Jeddie is clearly confused and I saw him duck around him to go out on the balcony, afraid of getting smacked again. This makes me so sad.

It has been hot here (93) and Jeddie is doing his usual belly-up sleeping pose, so he seems basically unfazed at this point. Not sure how long that will last if Beau keeps being mean to him.

Please send Beau some "be compassionate" vibes. I am guessing he is reacting to Jeddie's smell changing (his poor paws stink and his breath is horrid) and/or he can sense that something is not right.

Tomorrow I will call the VSC and find out what is involved to arrange a consult with the oncologist.

Poor Jeddie and poor Beau. I'm sure neither one understand. And I'm sorry you have to be the go-between. Beau's behavior almost sounds like jealousy.

Let us know when you can get him in to the oncologist. :YMHUG:
