Tananda just started on the new PZI

    We are just pulling through a couple of rough weeks, Tandy went Hyper on me, her BG numbers were so high my meter couldn't read them. She had completely refused food and water (which is very unlike her) for two days, was dehydrated and had trace Ketones. This of course prompted an emergency visit to our vet, a 40 minute drive. At the vet, her BG was to high for even their machine to read and that machine reads up to 678 (HOLY SH**!). They verified the trace Ketones as well as low potassium levels, liver & kidney functions and a few other results I can't remember being completely out of whack. Tandy spent a very angry night at the vet getting insulin and IV fluids and other medications to make her feel better. Tananda is very entertaining at the vet, the outlandish noises she was making prompted curios questions from other clients as well as some of the staff, wondering when they had started treating lions. The answer was always same, "Oh, That's just Tandy, growling".

    Tandy came home the next day, I got a crash course in how and where to give injections, as well as a refresher in Sub-Q fluids, I had to give her 100ml twice a day for two weeks and then reduce it to once a day for 10 days, she went through 4 bags of fluids. She just completed her last dose of fluids and is settling out quite nicely at 1/2 unit twice a day.

    But the part I really wanted to share with everyone is the incredible dedication of my vet. Dr. McMillan had given me her emergency cell number in case of any problems. Within 2 hours of my bringing Tandy home, she Hypo'd. So, I called. I was questions on her condition, was she conscious, could she hold her head up ect... Then I was instructed to give a tablespoon of Karo syrup and recheck her numbers in ten minutes, the Dr. would call back. Sure enough ten minutes later on the nose she called. This went on for another half hour, every ten minutes the Dr. called. After that she was calling for an update every half hour for about two hours, then every hour until about 10:00pm, after that it was every 2-3 hours all through the night since she knew I was going to be up with Tandy checking her numbers and generally keeping a watchful eye on her, and she was still refusing food the chances were quite high that she would (and did) Hypo again. The following day, The Dr. was calling every 3 hours for updates and instructing me on how much insulin to give. By the way, all of this occurred Easter Weekend. For two weeks she was calling every day at 5am and 5pm getting the "Tandy Report" and coaching me through the initial dosing period. And if for any reason she missed a call, she gave me her home phone number so I could contact her if I needed to. How many vets allow their clients to call them at home? Now that's dedication to ones calling.

    I've always known how great my vet is, she is also an Avian Specialist and a Board Certified Radiologist so I don't have to use two different facilities for my cats and birds. The level of compassion and dedication displayed by the entire staff at the Windhover Veterinary Center is beyond incredible, theirs is a model I believe all veterinary facilities could take a few lessons from.
