Hello..have finally been able to switch over here now that some of my life changes have calmed down some. Meet Taffy - the devil cat. (and let me start by saying that I LOVE this cat or else I wouldn't be going thru all of this with her, but there are days where I do not like her very much - today is one of them b/c she bit the fire out of me while trying to clip her nails). She can be nice on occasion and even be really sweet at times. But mostly we have to be on guard for the swipe or nip when walking close to her - hence the need to clip her nails. She has always had a mean streak but the diabetes has put a whole new spin on just how mean she can get when her BG is high. My DH and I have moved into a small apartment for a year in Philly (from a 3 story townhouse in Pittsburgh that we will be going back to) and I keep telling him I'm not so sure if this place is big enough for me and the cat (jokingly of course).
So...after weeks of patience and practice she will let me test her...if and ONLY IF I can put enough food in a bowl to keep her distracted (usually 1/4 FF can). If only it were that easy for a nail trim (sigh!)
For the most part, I am with my furkid 24/7. She gets her shots and food at 6:30 am and pm. I've been doing midday tests but it's hit or miss with the before bed tests because frankly by then we need a break from each other. But if I thought there was a serious need for it I would do it.
Her 5 Ps are normal (for her - she does purr and growl at the same time and there are days when she can't decide if she wants to rub against me or bite me - and before anyone suggests the water bottle, it usually just makes her meaner - but I do use it if it is close by)
In the morning I will be increasing her dosage from 5.75 units on Lantus to 6 units. If these numbers do not start looking better I will take her back to the vet to see why she is being so resistant to the insulin (her senior panel was run in July 2013 which is how we discovered the diabetes)
Also a lot of her bad aggression issues lately have been because she is a wet food addict. She would eat 10 cans if I let her and she is constantly trying to bully me into feeding her. I feed her 3-4 cans of FF a day depending on how much she harasses me. She is not overweight but has lost weight since the diagnosis. I started feeding her a bit more b/c she was looking too boney in the butt area. She feels like she is around the 12 lb mark.
Man..I feel like I just wrote a novel but wanted to give some background since I am new on this board.
Thanks for letting me vent a little too - I needed it LOL
