Low BG numbers for Jock

This is only my second post, and I apologize if I'm panicking a bit . . .

Here's a link to my introductory post from this morning: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=78398
Jock has been on 4 units BID Lantus for two weeks now (started with one unit BID about six weeks ago, and was doing weekly curves to work up to his current dose). I did a BG curve last weekend that ranged from low 200's to low 300's, one week after switching from 3 to 4 units.

I took another reading on Jock about 10 minutes ago, and it was down to 46. One week ago, a BG curve yielded numbers from the low 300's to low 200's. This morning, I started another curve, and his first reading was suspiciously low (69), but I didn't want to change dosage without consulting my vet (and, since it's a holiday, I can monitor him closely in case his numbers really take a dive). When I saw the 46, I broke open some higher carb food for him, and I have honey and maple syrup just case his numbers get any lower than that. He's not showing any of the major symptoms of hypoglycemia at the moment.

A couple of questions . . . given that the numbers are quite low compared to a week ago, how often should I test his BG today? Normally, when doing a curve, I do a pre-shot/pre-breakfast reading, then every 3 hours until dinner time (5 readings total). He doesn't enjoy testing, but he puts up with it pretty well, so if it needs to be every hour, we'll cope. Also, when it comes to giving a shot tonight, should I back off to three units until I can talk to my vet in the morning?

Advice, support, internet valium, etc., all greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tort

has anyone helped you yet?

I got a couple of replies to my post in the general forum. For the moment, I'm just going to keep testing every hour or so and keep an eye on him (I gave him some higher carb food and have honey at the ready just in case).

Thanks,
Tort

Tort,
How many hours has it been since you gave the insulin? With a number in the 40s, we would recommend that you give your Jock some high carb food, just a little bit (you don't want him to get too full), maybe two teaspoons, and then test again in 20 minutes. He could go down into the 30s real easy from this number and we want to get him up.

Also, when you get a number in the 40s, you'll want to reduce the dose.

Already gave him some higher-carb food about 30-40 minutes ago. His insulin shot was around 8:15 this morning (it's almost 1:00 here in Nebraska, so getting close to five hours). Update coming shortly . . .

I posted on your health thread as well but could you please post in lantus TR forum as Dyana suggested....more eyes there in case he's at this a while.

When kitty is this low, it's important to test, feed, and then retest in 30 mins...no more, ok? We call this lather, rinse, repeat. And you just want to be giving some gravy now and not let him get too full. It's good that he is mid cycle as it might be about time for him to come up.

Perfect. I left a post after yours in the TR forum. Can you please look at that and I'll see you there with you opening a new thread with his number? Thanks.
