Jupiter goes to the vet later today to get his stitches removed. (3:45pm)

We tried putting some lemon juice on the outside of the wrap to deter him from biting it... but didnt work at all... tried using some apple cidar vinegar... and at first it deterred him... he would put his face near his foot then he would give a weird look when he smelled it and he would turn away. So the bandage did stay on the majority of the night but he did take it off early this morning. I woke up every hour to check on him.

Yesterday I turned away from him for about 10 minutes and when I came back he had chewed the bandage and got it off and there was blood everywhere. I think its taking so long to heal because of him chewing on it. I am really hoping that its just the stitches making it itchy to him, and that once those are removed he wont bite at it anymore.

His appetite is poor, but he is still eating some, just not anywhere near enough.

Re: 7/30 Jupiter AMBG/69

Jamie, I haven't forgotten you and Jupe, and remember you in my prayers every night. I sure hope the vet has some good news and the wound is healed enough to get rid of those itchy stitches and won't need to be wrapped again.

If for some reason, it does, I remember someone suggestion maybe the vet put a hard cast over the wrap...At least he wouldn't be able to chew through it as quickly. Just an idea.

Will be thinking of you both this afternoon and hoping for good news. You could both use it!!

Take care and God Bless

Re: 7/30 Jupiter AMBG/69

I did ask about the hard cast and the vet said no...

so lets just hope its the stitches making it itchy, and once removed he wont bite at it anymore.

Thanks for the prayers and good thoughts/

Re: 7/30 Jupiter AMBG/69

Apple bitters do work better then most stuff, you can also put on back on neck for cats in heat, male wont bite back of neck
I'm sorry you have been struggling with this for so long now Jamie, but you have a nice morning number. hang in there shouldn't be long now, I hope!

Re: 7/30 Jupiter AMBG/69

Hi Jamie,
Thinking of you and sending the very best vines for the removal of the stitches. I hope you can find a way to keep the bandage on. Maybe the baby sock will work once the stitches are removed.

Hang in there.

Re: 7/30 Jupiter AMBG/69

Jamie, thinking positive thoughts and prayers for you and Jupiter. Good Vetty vines, too, for removal of his stitches today.

Re: 7/30 Jupiter AMBG/69

I hope everything goes well at the vet today and Jupiter's paw is healed enough to get the stitches out.

Re: 7/30 Jupiter AMBG/69

This has been a very difficult and trying week. Ive gotten so little sleep and just feel so exhausted and tired.

Today has been a rough day for Jupiter. First he got stuck in the couch... and I mean STUCK... like he could not get out at all. Second, vet removed stitches, we were on our way home... he started bleeding so bad and I didnt notice until it had soaked through my pants.

First Story:
The cats tore a whole in the lining underneath the couch. They go in there to hide. Today I stopped watching Jupiter for not even 5 minutes and went to find him (to make sure he wasnt chewing on bandage) and I couldnt find him anywhere... I was panicking pretty bad. I heard something in the couch and thought to myself "that cant be right" because I had already looked under the couch and in the lining. Well I went over and listened and there was noise coming from inside the couch. I took a flashlight and looked into the lining... and noticed Jupiters foot hanging down from the side.. I realized from his awkard movements that he was stuck and scared... Underneath the lining of the couch there is an open area at the back of the couch and he climbed up there and went into the arm of the couch. Because he is so big he couldnt turn himself around in there to get back out... and because of the awkward way he had to climb up there he couldnt just back out of it cause there was nothing for him to step back onto. I was frantically trying to figure out how to get to him. I had to take a pair of scissors and cut the outside lining on the side of the couch by the arm (This was after cutting a different spot under the cushions but I couldnt get to him from there)... after the first puncture with the scissors he put his paw there and was trying to scratch at the hole to get out.... I could tell he was very scared and so was I. I had to be so careful with the scissors because I didnt want to cut his paw or hurt him in any way... I cut a little more and I only had a little tiny hole there and Jupiter was already trying to squeeze his nose through it. So I tried to remain calm and keep cutting and had to stick my finger in there to make sure I didnt cut him. Once the hole was large enough he squeezed his head through and was meowing and I kept trying to make it bigger so he could get through and then he squeezed the rest of his body out. I had to hold the front of him because there was not anything there for him to step out on but he was so scared and just trying to get out of there as fast as he could.

Will post the second story in a few minutes

Re: 7/30 Jupiter-- vet appt...stitches... and 2 big scares!!

Here the second story / vet appt update:

We took Jupiter to the vet today, as today was the day he was to get his stitches removed. She checked the wound and said its looking okay but she could tell he chewed through the bandage and made his wound bleed. She removed the stitches and told us we can keep it unwrapped during the day as long as hes not biting it and said we can wrap it at night when we cant watch him so he cant bite at it as easily. She said if he doesnt bite it at all during the day, then in a day or two we shouldnt have to have a bandage on it at all... not even at night... She said to continue the AB's.

We were on the way home and Jupiter let out a few yelps... Its normal for him to meow on the car ride because he didnt like it so I didnt think too much of it. Then I felt something a little damp on my pants.... I looked down and saw a whole bunch of blood... All over me... all over my pants... and all over the blanket that Jupiter was sitting on. We turned around and headed to the vet - we called to tell them we were coming back. I looked at his foot and it looked like that area had really split apart. I was so scared.
(I am not good with blood and when I looked at his foot - I felt like I was going to vomit and pass out)
The whole time on the way back I was just saying "Its okay buddy, its okay" and "Oh my gosh Dane just hurry and get us there!!! its bleeding everywhere!!!"

So we got him back to the vet and they put new stitches in and the vet said it will need to stay wrapped for another 2 weeks. She said since Jupiter is so scared and lays perfectly still she was able to stitch it with him awake. I told her I thought Jupiter was in pain and asked her if she could please give him some pain medicine and told her that he didnt do well with the tramadol. She said we use 'bupe' for post-ops and I could give him a shot of that here. And I said yes! Thank you! So she gave him a shot of that and said it may make him sleepy... but it didnt seem to do anything at all for him. I hope it helped ease the pain though.

He seems to be doing fine right now. He hasnt been acting in any pain since the car ride. We are keeping a close eye on him so he cant chew the bandage. We really need this bandage to stay on for a few days. The vet said it would be best if we could keep this bandage on for atleast 3 days before changing it so it will heal some.

Re: 7/30 Jupiter-- vet appt...stitches... and 2 big scares!!

Oh, Jamie...that first story is so scary. I'm sorry you had a second story to tell! Did the vet give you more bupe to give to Jupiter at home? It's what many of us have used for our kitties. As always, our prayers are with you, big time. You are such an awesome Mom to Jupiter.

Re: 7/30 Jupiter-- vet appt...stitches... and 2 big scares!!

Jamie:

Having stitches put in hurts. Personally, I'd love to put a few stitches in your vet's leg while she's lying there unanesthetized. She could have easily used a local anesthetic. Have you given any thought to finding a new vet?

Yikes! That souns scary!

Glad you were able to get him patched back up again.

Oh my, what a day you had Jamie. both scary stories, I'm so sorry. Sending calming vines for all of you. I hope Jupiter will leave the bandage alone this time so that it can heal. Prayers to you.

Kathie

whoa... What a Day!

I hope Jupe will leave it alone for the next few days.

Sounds like you need to lay the couch on it's back now so it's all open everywhere.... maybe it won't look like a place to go....

Yes I am sure the stitches hurt being put in... thats why I asked her to give him some pain meds and if she would have said no I would have probably gotten very upset and rude.

No the vet acted like she would only give the Bupe there... and I didnt want to argue because I was happy she would atleast give him a shot there. I figured if he acted in pain once home I would call and request they give it to him... (also wanted to see how he would react to it first) we do have some bupe here (from RG & Mali) so if he acts in pain I will call and push the issue.

Thank you all for the visits. Yes a very hard day. And I think the next week will be even harder. I am running on barely any sleep at all these past few days. I was so excited to get the stitches out and bandage off. I thought I might get a few hours of sleep. I am going to do my best to take care of my baby jupe though... dont want him chewing on the bandage because I want it to heal up already.

At the vet we got a larger/ longer cone. And we got some "Yuk anti lick gel"... guess we will wait to see how that works...

(((((Jamie))))) and (((((Jupe))))),
I really hope everything gets easier from here on out for you guys. I hope the bigger cone works better for him.
Try to get some rest tonight.
Hugs to you both ~ Dane, too!

Oh my. What a difficult day... week...
You are in my thoughts and I hope Jupiter will be able to let his wound heal. He will feel better and so will you. Unfortunately he may not understand that. sigh...

Being stuck in the couch was SO scary! OMG!
And then splitting open his wound. You guys really need to catch a break here.
Sending healing thoughts and hugs.

Sending prayers, vines, and purrs to you, Jupe, and Dane. No wonder you are exhausted....it's like having a very fussy baby

Heres wishes to some much needed sleep and more vines for Jupe's paw. :YMHUG:

((((Jamie, Dane, & Jupiter))))

What a day! The first story was panicky enough - I can picture how close you can come to cutting him along with the couch! Then the vet redo. I hope the new cone keeps him from chewing for a few days, and it heals.

Vines for pain free night for Jupe, and a good nights sleep for everyone!

Jane

Oh Jamie, Dane, and Jupiter!

I'm so sorry for this nightmare day. I cannot believe the vet restitched him without a local. I would imagine the shot she gave him was Bupe SR for sustained release. If she did, it's a 3 day SR and is another one popular with vets now as Convenia is.

I hope you all get some rest today. I'm sure the sofa incident was really really scary.

Hugs!

Oh you poor guys! I sure hope that things will calm down now. I hope you can get some additional Bupe. I don't understand why the vet won't trust you to administer it. Have you given a thought to getting one of those fabulous collars that were pictured in your condo the other day? They would be much more comfortable than the cone and they looked very effective.

Sending all our positive thoughts and healing vines for the proper healing of Jupe's paw.

Ella & Rusty

Sending heaps of healing vines to Jupe and hugs to you Jamie. What a stressful and trying day. You are doing such a great job of taking the best care of Jupiter possible. Paws crossed tomorrow is a better day for all.

I hope you and Jupiter have a much better day today, Jamie. I hope the new longer cone works to keep him from biting at his stitches and that you get some much needed sleep. :YMHUG:

Thank you all.

I put more 'yuk' anti lick gel on his foot last night. I woke up and checked on him every 30 mins last night except for the 2 hours before we woke up this morning... My phone died so the alarms didnt go off until Danes alarm went off for him to wake up for work... And when I woke up Jupiter was licking the bandage! It doesnt seem like he chewed on it much or anything like that... just a few licks and maybe a single bite mark... so not horrible.

(((((Jamie & Dane)))))
I am so sorry you are having to go thru all of this, and poor Jupiter  I wish there was an easy answer for the bandage to stay on. I'm sending all of you healing vines and I have to agree with Sienne about possibly a new vet. I hope today goes better for you :YMHUG:

Hi Jamie. I just finished reading Jupiter's condo for the past few days and you have been having quite a trying week. I hope the new Yuk gel works and stops him from chewing the bandage. It sounds like it worked last night. If his leg was hurting him that might have been part of the reason he was chewing. If the bupe reduced his pain that might have helped with not chewing also.

You and Dane are doing a good job. We have you both and Jupiter in our Prayers. Have a great day Jamie.
