I'm screwed so far this morning - she has absolutely NO interest in wet food. I made the "mistake" of just giving WET after her shot and was going to see if she would eat that - NO. So I went and put dry down and she hasn't bothered to eat that either - like I lost my "audience" ..... going to give it a little while and see.

Have a call into hospital to see WHY they said not to give her Cypro. Was it JUST because she ate for them so they think she doesn't need it? Maybe I didn't make it clear about the hunger strikes she goes on? Who knows! All I know is that I have to get some food in this girl at some point this morning! I have talked to the vet tech who will be getting back to me.

Also - on a really strange side note .... this has happened before but ONLY since being diagnosed with Diabetes, never before that. Once in a while, in the very early morning she will make a strange "quacking" sound .... it's not a meow - it sounds like a quacking duck. I got up three times around 5AM to check on her as she was "quacking" .......anyone know what this is about?

I'm going to whip up some wet and have ready for syringe feeding ....... I'm going to give her until +3 and go from there.

Another day, another stress!

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

Hey Bern! What is up with that? I so understand how you feel!!! I gave Bob an appetite stimulant last night and he meowed allllllll night. However, he still did not want the wet food I put down OR the YA. He kept following me to the kitchen and practically climbing up my leg for food but didn't want anything I gave him. WTH!!! I think we need to check Tashie and Bob into a facility for eating disorders. Well, I hope she eats for you today..not sure what to say about the quacking. Guess that's just her thing....Bob has some pretty weird noises too...

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

Dara, what was the stimulant that you gave? The name of it?

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

Bern, I never had really high numbers but I did notice the meow was weird when we were up there. It was one of the things that made me go to the vet in the first place for dx.
Mine could barely get out a squeak. And I've seen others with odd sounds when their cats are Hi.

Sending appy vines...

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

Have you tried giving her baby food? Maybe she will eat that for you and it's soft enough to get into a syringe if needed - just add a little water.

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

Hilary, not gone the baby food route (yet) ....... just whipped up some 4% food to syringe her with to get her "jump started" and got the okay to give the Cypro. With the Cypro, she'll eat the furniture! Thanks - Oh, and IF I do go the baby food route, what have you used?

Thanks!

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

For baby food - you want to be sure that it doesn't contain onions or garlic.

I found that Beechnut stage 1 is a good option - it only has 2 ingredients meat and broth and comes in several choices - chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, etc. I have learned to always keep a jar or two in my pantry for those times when someone won't eat anything and it's usually late at night and I don't want to go out to fetch it.

I am sure there are other brands that you can get. When I started with baby food, I looked at labels and found Beechnut to be the simplest, so that's what I get and it makes the whole thing easier.

Might be something worth trying to see if that helps stimulate her appy. Of course if an appy stimulant works, then I'd be all for using it. Wonder why the vet didn't suggest it? Do you have a supply that you can just use until you can get hold of vet and get more?

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

An "eh, eh eh" kind of sound? See if there is a bug, bird or critter she is watching. Cats make that kind of sound when focused on possible prey.

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

Mine are on chatter boxes for anything they see, Oh Tashie be good for bean everyone would love it

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

Hey Bern - I forget the name but it starts with an M and it's pretty popular. Yikes! That was a rough night. Bob better eat because I don't want to go that route again!

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

When Sammy was in high numbers, her voice turned raspy and sounded more like croaking than meowing. I guess it did sound sort of like quacking. She didn't have a respiratory infection, and it wasn't a flare up from her allergies. We were really concerned about it. Thankfully, her voice slowly improved along with her numbers, and now she's back to her sweet melodious meowing.

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

Appetite stimulant starting with M, is most likely Mirtazapine.

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

got the okay to give the Cypro. With the Cypro, she'll eat the furniture

oh so glad you got the Cypro okay!!!!! That will help you both out immensely!!

But I hope she doesn't eat the furniture!
:o

Re: 8/15 TASHIE amps=high +not eating! + "Quacking"

Just sending some "eat your fuds" prayers along. I'm not sure why Tashie would suddenly start quacking, but my business partner's kitty is a quacker...it's just his normal voice. Maybe Tashie is a little raspy for some reason??

I hope you guys can work some R&R into the evening.

Hi Bern--Miss Tashie is being her high-maintenance self, to be sure! I hope the cypro gives her a good appetite and her BG comes down to an acceptable level

I write with a very heavy heart and alligator tears .......I just have a bad feeling. Things are not good. I am so so sad. I feel my little tiny, big blue eyed girl is leaving me ....... I just feel it in my heart. I had a long, long chat today with my retired veterinarian, whom I trust implicitly. I happen to have his home phone number and was brazen enough to call him and he returned the call...... we spoke for a long time. He is very familiar with the ER Internal Medicine Specialist that cared for Tashie in hospital and says hes s good one. He went over all of Tashie's tests and blood work with me and, although retired for 2 years now, feels that Tashie possibly has an underlying problem - he suspects "Cushing's Disease" he just isn't convinced that such a little cat would have diabetes and not be able to be controlled better - he feels that there is something "missed" ..... he's given me some "bullet points" for my phone consult tomorrow.

Tashie has been HIGH for days........ I just "upped" her insulin to 1.75U - probably should have done 2U but, again, I'm a chicken. Even with the Cyrrp, she will ONLY eat the DRY DM and I just can NOT withhold food from her - she NEEDS to eat! I have opened 15 cans today and .......no! Won't eat. I went and shopped for 12 different foods that varied from 5 - 12 in carbs / under 200 phos / high calorie ........ no interest.

My trusted retired vet does not think she is in CRF ,,,,,,??? Maybe the VERY beginning stages but nothing to warrant the Sub Q's ....... although I do have an appt to take her tomorrow.

I called her down when Jim took Mikko for a walk, she didn't come. She is just in a "spot" and I am worried about her. Her legs seem so weak - far more so since last week. She just seems like she's leaving me and I don't want her to go. I want her to stay forever and jump on the bed with me like she used to do ........ I want her back but I feel she is moving away. I am afraid to go to sleep and afraid if I do sleep to wake up. I've had this feeling all day. I almost don't want to test her again tonight - because if I see "HIGH" one more time, I'll scream........Oh, and you'll appreciate this! Her PMPS the first test showed 25!!! YIKES ...... Thank God for 2 meters! We tested TWO more times and ........ high. Talk about another jolt!

Going to sign off now. Just feel like I need to see if I can spend a little quality time with her ........so sad.

If she's going to eat dry then the insulin dose will have to be increased. You do what you need to do.

Because of the risk of recurring ketones, you may want to use tiny amounts of R or N as a bolus with Lantus to bring her down more quickly right now than the Lantus alone. In the US, you may be able to get either of these without a prescription. You would start with just a drop or two, when you can be home to monitor.

Check out Beyond BID dosing for details on other regulation tactics, too. Sometimes Lantus alone is not enough.

I think this is a good idea, under the circumstances. If you want to pick up a bottle of R, I can help you get started with it tomorrow. I've heard that Wal-Mart is the cheapest place to get it by far. I believe Dyana has said she bought Novolin R there for about $25.

i wholeheartedly agree with both libby and BJM. i'd get a vial of R (regular insulin) asap. tiny doses of R can be used in combination with lantus to help pull numbers down. it's a method we've often used successfully in this group to help keep ketones at bay. we can help you with it...

as libby mentioned, Novolin R is inexpensive at WalMart.
last year i paid around $95 for a vial of Humulin R at Walgreens. wish i would have known about WalMart.

Bern

Please consider using the R with Jill and Libby helping. It's either that or she will possibly need to go back to the hospital so they can get her numbers down.

Hang in there...... :YMHUG:

Hi Bern.

My heart breaks for you, as I know what your feeling right now. For 2 years I woke up every day looking at my cancer kitty thinking, "is this the day? Please don't let him go when I'm not home." Feeling helpless is the worst feeling in the world.

It sounds like you got some great information from the retired vet, so hopefully they can do more tests to figure out what's causing this.

The group gave some great advice about buying R. I didn't know that was an option (as a newbie), but I would definitely do it.

Try to hang in there, you're doing great.

:YMHUG:

oh no- i am sending ((hugs)) and prayers.

I was wondering if she has something stuck in her throat? Fur ball? Tiggy loses his voice and does weird squeaks when he has one sometimes before he hacks it up
