After the other day of Harley dropping real low twice on a miniscule dose and having a tough time raising him, I decided to hold his shots. His numbers so far have been pretty good on his own...at this rate is it him or is it the depot?

Re: 8/24 Harley (holding shots since 8/21) 78 AMPS

The depot is probably empty by now. He might be doing this on his own. If he can hold 14 days of 50-130 then he is considered OTJ. the 137 yesterday morning was a little high but could have been due to the kibble.

Consider it an OTJ trial? Help his pancreas out a bit though.. give frequent mini meals instead of larger ones - even overnight if you can - freeze food and leave it out?

And no syrup, karo, kibble or anything - he wont need it as he isnt getting insulin right now. Some cats go to 40 on their own naturally so dont worry if he sneaks to there too.

Paws crossed!

Sounds good, I will give it a shot and we will see where it goes :)

He was getting such a small amount and getting so low I was concerned if his pancreas had started doing it's job he would drop too low, and it was being counter productive for me to give him carbs to bring him up...I figure let's see where his body is at naturally and get a good bead of where he's at :)

Kris

Can you please change the AMPS to AMBG since you aren't shooting? we only use AMPS if we shoot.

Re: 8/24 Harley (holding shots since 8/21) 78 AMBG

you can test how he's doing by testing..... feeding. and then test again 3 or 4 hours later to see if he drops on his own.

If anyone told you that already, I missed it.

Go Harley!

Re: 8/24 Harley (holding shots since 8/21) 78 AMBG

Well, if you want to call it an OTJ trial, here are the official instructions.

Here are the instructions for an OTJ trial:
  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas). The morning test is now called the AMBG. The evening test is now called the PMBG.
  • If your cat is green (0-99 human meter) at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If the numbers are blue (100-199 human meter), feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. Food raises BG's. So if the number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!
  • After 2 weeks, if everything is looking good, we have a party! And boy, do we party hearty.

Sometimes, the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support by starting the cat with a tiny dose of insulin again. I had to do that with Wink. We simply start the cat back on a tiny dose of insulin to support the pancreas with healing for a bit longer. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to be safe now then sorry later that you rushed it. With just a little more time we will probably get that strong remission we are looking for.

Re: 8/24 Harley (holding shots since 8/21) 78 AMBG

Thank you!! I looked and hadn't found the official OTJ trial, so I am glad I have it...he gets 3oz 2x day and 2 teaspoons 2-3x day...what type of feedings should I break up into? What time/time spread?

Re: 8/24 Harley (holding shots since 8/21) 78 AMBG

Since he won't be getting insulin, I would try to break up his total food intake per day into even portions.
If he normally gets a total of 8oz per day, then try to give 1oz 8 times per day (every 3 hours), or 2oz 4 times per day (every 6 hours). I don't know if my math is correct, but hopefully you get the idea. Even portions at even intervals.
Smaller meals many times per day are easier on the pancreas.

Re: 8/24 Harley (holding shots since 8/21) 78 AMBG

Even though I accidentally fed him a full breakfast (3 oz) four hours later he's lower than he was before breakfast...hes at 57 at +4!! Come on Harley!!!

Re: 8/24 Harley (holding shots since 8/21) 78 AMBG

Usually, it's one of the more experienced forum members who gives the go ahead for a trial but it looks like Harley decided for us and is already at Day 3. Good luck with the trial!

Re: 8/24 Harley (holding shots since 8/21) 78 AMBG

Harley kind of pushed the issue for no insulin so lets see how he does with that for a bit longer.

Drumroll....PMBG is 67!!

Yes, Harley, my wonderful microdose kitty started making some insulin on his own and even with teensy doses we were having some wild numbers :)

Oh Harley dearest? Would you have your mommabean do a new condo every day? We like to cheer kitties on that are on OTJ trials. You'll get to read my amazing poetry. Amazingly bad that is. ;-)

Harley is on trial day four,
he's got ten more,
then he'll be living the easy life,
no more toil and strife,
he'll have to beg for those treats,
life will be amazingly sweet.

:RAHCAT Go Harley Go! Go all the way to OTJ! :RAHCAT
