For those of you that didnt get to see, Carl posted some pics for me of Jupiter after surgery.



Thank you all so much!!!!!!!! the positive thoughts, vines, and prayers are so appreciated.


Last night he got his meds. He wouldnt eat anything - we tried all of his favorite foods. He was so sleepy and we didnt push the food issue, we just let him rest - im sure he needs lots and lots of rest.

Well we got through the night last night! When I woke up this morning Jupiter was sleeping in the litter box in the crate and he did get the cone off somehow but didnt mess with the incision at all. I gave him his Bupe. He ate 2 or 3 small bites of food and now he is laying in bed with me (my bed is a futon mattress and its on the floor). He is so content laying next to me and he is sleeping. :-D


OH!!! and did I mention..... JUPITER TOOK 2 STEPS FORWARD TODAY ON HIS OWN!!!!!!! :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D He took 2 steps forward and then laid down and went to sleep. He is so precious!!! :-D

(the reason I say forward is because yesterday he was trying to hop backwards - I tried helping him because he would start to get very upset and keep falling so I held him up and tried to help guide him. Then again later in the day yesterday he tried getting up to walk and kept falling over and kept trying to hop backwards instead - we thought he might have to go pee... so dane tried to help hold him up and guide him. They were very awkward steps but he must be learning since today he took those 2 steps forward on his own! To me atleast, that seems like great progress! Didnt even expect him to be able to take 2 steps yet)

I'm glad he's doing so well and getting to relax with you on your bed. He will need a lot of rest to give his body time to heal.

Can you adjust the cone so it stays on better? He is going to need to keep that cone on. Once his leg doesn't hurt as much he might try licking it and I don't think that is wise. If you can get him used to having his cone on 24 hours a day now, while he's sleepy, maybe it will be easier to keep it on 24 hours a day, when he's getting around better.

Good morning Jamie, I am so elated to Jupiter had a good night last night that is wonderful news. I really do hope that you're able to get the cone back on him and have him accept that and keep it on. Asthe incision begin to heal its going to bother him more and he will start licking and biting and chewing anything to get that sensation of relief. I wish you much luck I know how difficult that can be. I also really hope that you can keep in crated as much as possible, I know that's probably not what you want to do. But in the interest of healing he really does need to be subdued for a while. Much much luck to you. I'm so happy that Jupiter is doing as well. Major healing vines for Jupe!

So good to know Jupiter had a good and restful night, and that you got some rest and are feeling more cheerful! Jupe is going to have to learn to walk again, and it sounds like he's making a good start. Sending good eating and cone vines for him today. BTW, it's startling but not unusual for a kitty coming out of anesthesia and/or on pain meds to rest or sleep in the litterbox.

This is great news indeed! So glad he is home and getting comfy in bed with you. Nothing like having your mama and papa to make him feel better.

Good Morning: Glad he had a good night. Sleeping in the litter box probably gives him security because it is a confined space. I hope you can resolve the cone problem, it is important he keep that on. As it heals it will itch and he will bit and lick at it. As for his instability, he needs to adjust to having 3 legs also he is on pain meds with probably contribute to his instability. I think it is important to keep him confined and limit his mobility. I'm sure it makes you sad but that is necessary for the healing process to be successful. I believe once he is off the pain meds he will be able to balance better but he still needs the pain meds and confinement.

Continued successful recovery to Jupe and to you Jamie. I know it is difficult but he has gone through so much rest and reduced activity are in his best interest.

What Dyana says is absolutely correct. Does the cone fasten with a bow? If so, it will have to be tied more tightly. He cannot be allowed to lick that wound. Having a wound that large open up or fail to heal will be very serious. You have done so well with everything since he came home. Dealing with the crate and cone and protecting that wound is your number one job in the next little while.

hi Jamie, I had meant to mention this earlier when I posted before: as far as the litter box goes you can always use shredded newspaper, it's cheap it's available and it is relatively sterile. Its a good substitute in the event that the litter that you normally would like to have is not available to you. Wish you much luck.

I was thinking that if you can think of the cone wearing in 12 hour increments and let's say if he keeps it on and his wound is healing well that he has to keep it on for 14 days, then at the first 12 hour mark, you could say to him "Yay, Jupiter! only 13.5 more days in the cone!" or something like that. He needs that cone on all the time to heal that big incision.
Can you think of it in increments? Would that help you? I'm sure that eventually, Jupiter will get used to it. It may take 2 days, but he will get used to it.

I gotta echo the others.... the cone is important.
If he were to mess with his incision, the vet might want to keep him at the clinic for even longer to make sure he left it alone, especially if he were to mess with the incision.

Try not to associate the cone as such a bad thing, it's an aggravation, sure but it's a good thing in the long run to keep the healing moving forward.

Hi Jamie, it sounds as though he is doing good. I think it's great he took a few steps, yeah! Baby steps and he will get there. So sweet that he is laying with you. Keep it up Jupiter.

Whoohoo for two baby steps!! That does sound like a great start so early in his recovery. :-D :-D I am so happy to hear you so upbeat Jamie!!!

Two steps is awesome! Creatures great and small can be amazingly resilient. I am confident Jupiter will sort it out and increase his mobility as he heals and feels better. So great to know he is home and on the path to recovery! :YMHUG:

Jupiter just went pee!!! It was a little hard for him ... Dane held him up enough so incision wouldnt get urine or litter on it... but his other foot got soaked and the clay cat litter all stuck to that foot so we had to clean him up a bit.... he peed a ton! He starting howling and yelping so his bladder must have been too full and hurting him.

Glad he was able to go pee!

You may want to not use litter for the time being, at least until he heals, learns how to balance, etc.

You can put pee pads in the lb, shredded newspaper, even hamster bedding may be a better option for right now.

That's a slew of good news, Jamie, Hooray for the 2 steps, woot on the LB pee & congratulations Jupe is adjusting so well! Also nice to see you happy, too! Thanks for all the updates!

I have a small suggestion if you want to help Jupe walk a bit...just so he can get some exercise and all... take a small towel and fold it long ways and position it under his belly like a sling. You can hold the towel up in the air high enough to let his feet touch the floor. This may assist him until he gets used to walking on three legs.

Oh...yea....I have to agree...cone needs to stay on!!!!! You can try a new born onsie on him, that should cover the incision area so he can't get to it also.

Great news!!
I'm glad he stepped forward today!
That IS a great improvement!!!
It's wonderful he's even willing to use the LB after such a big surgery.
I think Jupiter's doing great!

thats great news! One small step for jupiter.. one happy leap for FDMB!

When Tiggy had his cone I made him wear it when I couldnt watch him like a hawk. And even when I watched him, if he went near his incision it went back on. but if he lay and slept he was allowed cone-free time

Yeah on baby steps for Jupiter as he relearns to walk.

Two steps forward, one step back,
pretty soon Jupiter will get the knack,
of walking all over again,
in the meantime, use that towel and a crane!

around the area where there is the staples and towards his belly he is starting to get really swollen
would it help if i wrapped an icepack in a cloth and laid it next to him there?
the vet did say some swelling to be expected but its not looking so great pretty swollen

For now, I would let things be. If there are staples, they will conduct cold and an ice pack could cause more discomfort. If you're concerned, call the vet before you do anything.

This is so wonderful to hear that Jupiter took 2 steps forward AND he peed!!!! I'm sorry to hear that he's in some pain right now. It's got to be a lot for the little guy to deal with after everything else he's been through. You're doing a great job, Jamie. ((hugs)) to you and comfort/pain-free vines for Jupe.

*sighs* its so sad to see him in pain. I just gave him his dose of bupe so really hoping that helps him soon. I made a nice comfy bed for him in the crate and hes laying in there. I think he was having a hard time getting comfy (even on the bed he just didnt act comfortable) so I added some extra blankies for him and he seems more comfy and relaxed but still in pain.

Poor baby boy, just wish he was feeling all better. He tries to get up to move to get comfortable and he falls over and he acts so upset and frustrated. I keep reminding him that he will get more balance and be able to move around better soon. I love him so much and really dont like seeing him like this. :cry:

I would appreciate if you all could continue sending him healing vines, prayers, and positive energy & thoughts. Thank you
 
Definitely sending more healing and no pain vines for Jupe.

Jamie, you can give the bupe a little closer together. Best dosing is every 8 hours but I believe it can be given as often as every 6. Let me check with Linda but you don't want his pain to get ahead of him.

I think I remember you saying they gave you enough bupe for 3 days? Did they say they would give you more if needed after that three days? The most important thing, to me, is to keep him as pain free as possible for as long as possible. If he acts like he's still hurting really bad after the bupe runs out, try to insist on more. You know it works well for him.
 
vet gave enough for 3 days.... minus 2 doses?!?! I measured it in the syringes because it didnt look like much....

he said after 3 days, Jupiter should only be in mild pain


I do have more Bupe, Carla sent us some... 5mls of it... so plenty.... more then what we got from the vet
 
Jamie, I'm sorry that Jupe is in pain tonight. We are sending lots of good thoughts his way that the Bupe will help him.
I think that if the vet said to expect swelling, you should just let the swelling take its course. After such a big incision and stitches, it would be expected that there would be swelling. A cool washcloth might help to take the swelling down a little (not icy, just cool; wring out the cool water and wrap the washcloth in a plastic bag).

I hope that you and Jupiter will be able to have a restful night. You are doing such a good job. Remember: "Every day in every way Jupe is getting better and better".

Honestly to me, he is doing better than I expected. I thought he would be like this earlier . When bailey had all his teeth out he was ok when he got home in the morning but went downhill by evening and overnight and most of the next day.

I would call the vet tomorrow with his progress and see what he thinks about the swelling, icing, pain killers etc

When Tiggy had his tumour removed we were instructed to use an ice pack on it, wrapped in a towel so it was cold but wouldnt ice burn him or anything and to apply it for five minutes three times a day to reduce pain and inflammation.

Its not even right near the staples that I am worried about... more towards his belly there is a lot of swelling.

His last dose of gabapentin was last night so I am thinking maybe thats why he is more pain tonight then last night.

Hi Jamie, I'm happy to hear Jupe is doing some steps but sorry to hear about the pain tonight :sad: I can't imagine the stress it is causing all of you, you're doing so well! I was at Petsmart and saw an inflatable collar that is supposed to be able to be used instead of a cone...it has mixed reviews but figured I'd post a link in case you'd like to check it out, if you have a store nearby:) Even though it's in the dog section :oops: they have it in xsmall through large so it'd fit kitties: http://www.petsmart.com/product/ind...&lmdn=Dog+Health+Care&f=PAD/psNotAvailInCA/No Sending many, many healing vines to Jupe! cat_pet_icon

I am so sorry to hear Jupiter is in pain.
I know it's very hard for you to see him in pain and you are worried for the swelling.
Isn't there a way to comunicate wth the doctor and describe the situation, in case he has a suggestion to make?
I wish all the best, and will focus my intention on sending healing energy.

Some of Jupe's discomfort may be because he's trying to be more active. All of the tissue around the incision is being exercised when he moves. The movement is good because it helps to keep the muscles working, reduce the swelling, etc. but it may cause some of the pain to flare up -- it's a mixed bag. Like Marje said, the important thing is to help Jupe to stay ahead of the pain. I'm sure you know this from your experience with kidney stones. If you slow down on the meds when the pain is still acute, it's hard to get the relief you need. It's the same for Jupe.
