9/25 Bob AMPS=350 Bupe?

Good morning LL!

Bob is ok this morning. He's just really up and down and I'm at a loss. I'm giving him the Onsior at night and he seems to feel his best a couple hours after that so I know something is either inflamed or painful and that medicine is helping him somehow. He just seems kind of blah this morning. He peed and ate some and then just went to lie on a reusable shopping bag for the rest of the time I was there. I got his string out and he does play with it, but he doesn't get up - he will only play with it if I keep it in reaching distance. He did get up to sharpen his claws once and to pee.

I'm trying not to be hysterical or horribly stressed, but I just hate when I KNOW there is something wrong and nobody seems to know what. Is he really in pain and I don't know?? That would just kill me, but what do you do when nothing shows up on the tests?? Sigh. :cry:

I have the vet tech coming over tonight to give him fluids (I really don't like doing it myself) and she will be seeing him on Friday and Sunday to give him more. I know he's a bit dehydrated so maybe that's his problem. Who knows. I will ask the doctor for some bupe, which Sienne mentioned in case he's not feeling well while I'm in Texas. What exactly is bupe? I know it's a pain med, but is it anti-inflammatory too like the ONsior?

My ss is NOT up to date, but I will do my best to get that done. Bob saw some blue last night and he seemed to eat really well too. He was 119 at PMPS so I lowered his insulin by .25. He ate 1/8 cup of the DM and he was 145 @ +4.5 and 142 @ +5.5. Weird. So maybe a bounce this morning?

Thanks Rhiannon for the turkey treats which Bob LOVED yesterday. He didn't want any this morning, but I tried to give them to him right after he ate. I probably need to wait until he's hungry....

Bupe is the short name that we give buprenorphine/buprenex. It's a opioid (i.e, a narcotic) that's in the morphine family. It's not an anti-inflammatory. The problem with NSAIDs in cats is that some of them have been related to renal failure -- most notably Metacam (meloxicam). Onsior is an NSAID.

By any chance, did your vet get blood for a Spec (or Snap) fPLI in order to test for pancreatitis? If not, would the vet tech be able to get a blood sample so you can have this run?

Hi Sienne -

I don't believe so - but I can ask about it. I guess because he was ok during the tummy exam, they didn't feel it necessary. I have a call into them for some other things and I will find out if that's something we can do. If so, I would probably do it next week. Will the test come back positive if there are no symptoms or do I need to get him there when he's having symptoms?
 
Hi Dara - I'm sorry Bob is still not feeling too well. I know how stressful that is. I hope the fluids help him feel better. :YMHUG:
 
Sending healing vines for Bob. Cats are really good at hiding pain, they don't let us se it until it can be severe. If the vet tech could get the blood draw tonight, it might be a good idea to get the test done sooner rather than later.

When do you leave?
 
Last year when J.D. had a flare up of pancreatitis, he did not seem painful when the vet palpated or squeezed his tummy, so they don't always show their pain. I would have the blood test run.
 
I called and will take him in tomorrow night for that test. How long do bouts of pancreatitis usually last?
 
Just adding more prayers to the pile. I don't have an p-titus experience, so hopefully someone will come along and answer your question soon....
