10/28 Ebby AMPS 260 +1 311... Moldy Wellness

Yes, moldy wellness canned Turkey! I went to open one last night and there was the nastiest, horrible smelling mold on top of the food. I did not see any obvious signs of damage to the can so not really sure what to make of this. The can was marked 7WTKS4 Best by 23 Aug 16. I contacted Wellness this morning via email. I went ahead and opened some new cans and fed the kitties this but now I'm kind of worried. I'm hoping this was an isolated can, but not really sure how to know. The moldy can was very obviously mold, and the other cans I opened appeared to be ok, but just got to worrying about the food. I was also thinking about Mariko's Lucy not feeling well yesterday after eating the Turkey....but of course I'm probably letting my worries get the best of me.

Ebby is doing fine this morning, and was very playful and cute...so she seems to be feeling well.

I'd be a little concerned too, but if it's what you have to feed, you almost have to use it. Most cats won't eat food that's spoiled (at least they're not supposed to) so if it looked good, and smelled good, the other cans were probably OK

But I know it has to be a little worrying for you too! Wonder if you take them back to where you bought them if they'd let you exchange them?

One fall I had product consistency issues with Wellness and was able to determine the batch numbers that were affected. I called them and let them know. I also made sure not to get any more from that plant number. They sent me coupons for a free case.

That is TERRIBLE!!!!

I'm not sure but I think the "7WTKS4" part indicates that it's Wellness Turkey 5.5oz.
Mine expires 10 April 2016.

After reading this condo, I called the store to exchange the remaining case to 3oz cans!
I'm going to the store right now!

I have cans from the same batch as Mariko. It has me wondering, too...my guys started to refuse to eat the Turkey all together, so I hadn't been feeding it. I think I'm going to take it back tomorrow, too.

Hi guys...I still haven't heard back from Wellness. I sent them an email, but may call tomorrow if still no response. I think the 7W at the beginning of the code indicates which plant it was made in. Not sure about the rest though, but these were the 5 oz. cans.

Mariko, I sure hope I didn't overly worry you, but I instantly thought of you and Lucy, and remembered she felt sick after eating the turkey. This can was so moldy it would not have gone undetected....there was no doubt it was mold, so you would have known before you fed it to Lucy. I just worry there is other mold in these batches that is not as easy to detect. Some other cans I have opened from that same batch have a tiny white/grey film in spots, and although this could be normal I'm going to probably not use them. I have one can of core to get me through tonight, and then will maybe just go pick up some wellness chicken for now.

Interesting.....Gracie has been a little hesitant about eating the turkey lately but I see nothing wrong with the food.
