Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 405 - Blood Work Results

I'm sorry, I meant to say that this morning I finally updated J.D.'s blood work results from 10 days ago, in his spreadsheet.
His BUN and his MONOS are H.

Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 405 - Blood Work Results

Good Morning Dyana! Give J.D. a hug and a scritch for me, and I hope he gets out of the reds today and that his BUN comes down. I noticed, on his labs, that his glucose was 105--awesome!

Dyana --

How was J.D.'s creatinine? Did they get a urine specific gravity? It's best to try to interpret the BUN with the other test data.

Minor elevations of monocytes are most often seen as part of a normal stress response or secondary to corticosteroid medication. More significant elevations are most often seen with chronic inflammation or tissue destruction, like with an abscess, endocarditis, arthritis or an autoimmune disease. I would wonder if the elevation is due to the repeated episodes of pancreatitis.

Morning Dyana,

So sorry you have to be at tbp. Hope your day goes smooth and quick :-D

J.D., please side down safely for your momma!

Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 405 - Blood Work Results

Come on down JD! At least you don't need to worry while at tbp.

While the BUN is high, Creatinine and Phosphorus aren't bad. When feeding a high protein diet it isn't unusual for BUN to be above "normal". Those normal standards were set when most cats were being fed low protein/high carb diets. BUN is a level of the waste left from processing protein, with more protein in the diet the Bun will be higher. As Sienne said you have to look at it in relation to Creatinine and Phosphorus.

Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 405 - Blood Work Results

i thought i'd been told that BUN could also be higher if the cat was dehydrated - and most FD cats are dehydrated. not sure if that's right or not - does anyone know?

sorry you're having to work again today, dyana. i hope you get some days off this week since you've worked all weekend.

Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 405, +5.75 139, +7 140 - Blood Work Resu

His Creatinine is 2.0 and his USG is 1.020 and his Phosphorus is 5.1

I have to get back to work.

Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 405, +5.75 139, +7 140 - Blood Work Resu

Did you give him any fluids the day of or day before his blood was drawn?

If not, his USG and creat indicate to me that he is probably in the early stage of Stage2 CKD. His HCT is still really good. At this point, the biggest thing is keeping his phosphorus closer to 4.5.

Yes..a little dehydration can increase the BIN and if creat and USG are normal, I wouldn't be concerned. But if JD didn't get fluids within 24 hours of blood draw, then the picture, to me, is very early Stage 2 CKD. For his age, his numbers look great.

Marje,
He did not get fluids. I've only given them like twice when he had pancreatitis in April of 2012. He just drinks a lot of water everyday and pees a lot everyday because he seems to spend half his day in higher numbers.
Early Stage2 sounds scary. All the vets say his is doing really good and the results he gets are to be expected in an older cat.

Off to bed for us. I hope I can sleep. This week has been exhausting.
