Wednesday's Condo

I didn't post yesterday because there really wasn't much to say until late in the evening WC time, and I figured no one would see it. I guess many would say taking Cinco for a curve was a mistake, since it messed him up, numbers wise. They did give him sub-q fluids, and that really perked him up, so I'm glad about that. I took him in a little before the requested time of 7:30 am (huge for me, as I am a night owl). The vet wasn't going to be there until 8, which concerned me - they weren't going to give him his insulin until she got there. That would be stretching it to at least 12 +1 hours. When it was all over I found out they didn't actually give him the insulin until 10 am (+15) because they had an emergency come in and only one vet to handle it! No wonder his number were so bad! I really don't see what they could have learned, messing up his schedule like that, and then they gave his PM shot at AM+9.5! Sure, it got him some greens, but is that really a good thing? :YMSIGH: The vet had to leave before I picked him up and is supposed to call today. I had left some questions for her and I got some answers via the vet techs: No, they've never tested him for pancreatitis because he's never had symptoms (no vomiting, no abdominal mass or tenderness). She had no idea if the Zobaline was causing any problems, as she'd never heard of it. She did some research and only found evidence of it's use in humans. I will discuss that with her today when she calls. I am really leaning toward the idea that the Zobaline was not a problem. The vet tech told me that the bartonella was probably the reason for the increased thirst/urination, as well as the fact that his numbers weren't coming down after the dosecreases, and the OV said the same thing. I guess I just need to sit tight and wait for the antibiotic to do it's thing. It's only the third day for that (they did give his meds at the correct times  ). To top everything off, while I was sleeping in this morning to recover from a very long day yesterday, my dh got caught on a conference call and didn't get Cinco his am shot until an hour after we'd planned! :o It was only +12.5, but didn't help us get him back on schedule. The good news is that we have the weekend ahead of us, when his schedule is open and we can adjust the shot times back towards normal.

Much to my amazement, they said he ate all food and most snacks offered while he was there (he usually won't eat when we board him there).

BTW, I posted this at the end of my last condo, but I'll repeat that the urinalysis was negative - no ketones, no infection, no blood, crystals, etc.

While Cinco was gone, I got the house vacuumed (I hate to do it when he's around as it scares him) and cleaned his water dispenser, washed his bedding and scrubbed the carpet where he'd peed over the edge of the lb. It was an "extra large" box, but he's an extra large cat and was hanging his tail out the entryway :o . I moved our "giant" box downstairs, and although it's not as aesthetically pleasing as the other one, I figured it's better than pee on the floor! So far, in spite of the fact that its edges are high all around, he's had no trouble getting in and out and keeping his deposits inside the lines. :RAHCAT

It'll be interesting to see where his numbers take us today, and how soon we start seeing improvement after the AB. I am going to ask the vet about my giving him a round or two of sub-q over the next couple of days, since I think he'll continue to be somewhat dehydrated. I'll have to watch the video for a refresher course, as it's been almost a year since I've done it. I'll post after I talk to the vet.

Sending healing vines to all kitties in need and hugs to stressed-out beans :YMHUG:

Re: 1/17 Cinco AMPS 351 +2 306

Wow! What a screwed up day at the vet! They certainly didn't do you any favors by messing his schedule up. I'm not at all surprised at the 98 considering he got shot at +9.5

It's really too bad for Cinco since you've almost got to start over on the cycle count for 1.25. If it weren't for the vet mess up, I'd suggest it might be time for an increase since his nadirs have been pretty consistently in the yellows, but hopefully, after the antibiotic has had a little more time, and he gets back on his shot schedule, he'll show you some better numbers

I might suggest that next time you want to do a curve, do it at home and send the vet the link to your spreadsheet or print it out and mail it to him.

Good to hear the IV fluids made him feel better though. It can be amazing how much a little extra fluid can do for them!

Hope things return to normal for you today and over the weekend!

Chris: I agree. I will not let them do another curve. Much as I appreciated the "day off", it didn't help Cinco any. Still waiting to hear from the vet. I did leave her a printout of this year's SS so far. Hopefully she'll get a better picture of what's going on from that.

Well, that doesn't sound like a good day at all  I hope you can get Cinco back on track this weekend! At least he ate at the vet, Chyna will not  Paws crossed that the ABs kick in soon, and yay for the pee inside the giant box :-D Hopefully you can have a nice chat with the vet when she calls, sending you "good wording and rememeber all your questions" vines! I always have to write down what I want to know or I forget  I'll look later to see what happens. Hope you're having a good Friday!

Ugh....I hate it when vet clinics don't understand (or care) about the importance of 12/12 dosing with insulin. It took me a week to get Champ back on track. Of course, there was a huge bubble in his insulin pen when I got it back from the vet, too, so I had to start new insulin to get him headed in the right direction again. Hope it doesn't take too long for Cinco to get back on track. Really, no sense taking him to the vet for a curve anyway when you have lots of data already on him, with his insulin given to him properly and no vet stress to influence the numbers.

Champ is a chicken when it comes to the vacuum, too, though I'm not as nice as you. I still vacuum when he's around and he just bolts to another room. My sister posted this video on my Facebook page and I thought you might enjoy it as well (no, it's definitely not Champ!)

Speaking of vacuum cleaners and cats....this video is one of my favorites since it is both a dustmop and a vacuum cleaner

Thanks, Patty, Chris and Rachel.

I loved the video!!! So funny that both Patty and Chris shared it - great minds! :-D I immediately posted it on Facebook. That is definitely NOT Cinco!  My GA Siberian, Kisa, would hide for hours if I so much as rolled the vacuum out of the closet! Cinco doesn't hide, but he watches me very closely, and when it gets near him, he flees. Now that he's blind, I'm going to be even more careful about that, because he could hurt himself in his efforts to escape. In the past, I've made a point of speaking gently too him the entire time I'm vacuuming, and as I get closer to him, I move more slowly. I only do the area immediately around his hidey hole when he is elsewhere, which isn't often enough! Thus my taking advantage of his vet trips!
