MORNING ALL!!! Still pretty stressed about having to start a new antibiotic for Scrabble, the vet should be getting back to me today to let me know whether it is avail in liquid form or not. I have been reading about it and it seems scary because his numbers are most likely to go up! I know it is necessary for him to make sure the bacteria is completely gone but he seems so well right now!!!! I feel so bad to have to give him AB again especially if they are going to make him not feel well. I read that cats on baytril can be lethargic. I am going to ask about forti-flora and if they don't have it at the vet office I will order it on amazon. I do not need Scrabble losing any more weight since he lost a lot all ready! Anyway, I am off today (new schedule now that I got cut a shift at work) so hopefully we will get started on the ab today. If anyone has used baytril before let me know what to expect, thanks!!!

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105

I hope Scrabble loves the FortiFlora as much as my cats do.
Good luck with the vet!
Try to have a good day, Michelle.

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105

Good Morning, Michelle and Scrabble. I just got finished catching up on yesterday's condo and wow....poor Scrabble and poor Michelle. Hey, at least you know what is going on and you can do something about it...look on the bright side. Jeez, tho, 28 days of AB's.

I've never used Baytril, so I can't really give you any insite on this particular med. I am so sorry to hear that it may bring up Scrabble's numbers, but as someone said (sorry, can't remember who), it's only temporary. Temporary is good! When Spot had his...whatever it was that made him so sick starting on Halloween, it was suggested that I get the flortiflora also. Since it was a Sunday and my vet wasn't open, I went to GNC and bought a probiotic from them. It didn't have the flavor that the FF has, but it worked. I just mixed it in his food.

Question....if you can't get it compounded, could you crush it and mix it in some food? Spot is very hard to pill, so whenever I had to pill him, I bought a pill crusher and mixed it with some food. It worked..however, the taste of the AB may not work...didn't for Dian when she had to pill the orinch boyz.

With all of this stuff going on, I hope that you have a good day Michelle. GIve Mr. Scrabble a kiss on his nose for me, kay!

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105

Morning Scrabble. Dude, it's like we're brothers today...my AMPS was identical to your AMPS. Sweet. Good luck on those antibiotics...

Six

Hi Michelle. I've used baytril before with my cats. In fact, I used it this past October with Six. He was a really sick boy when we used it and was not yet diabetic (at least the blood work wasn't showing it) so I can't comment on whether or not it made him more lethargic.

So with that said...if the vet sent out a culture, I imagine there should be a list of antibiotics that could fight the infection. It would be worth asking if there are any other ABs that might work too. If you knew you could switch later if the baytril is too rough on him, it might help you feel more comfortable.

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105

(((Michelle & Scrabble))) Nice AMPS # :thumbup
I am sorry your frusturated about starting the new med, but lets not worry too much until we see what happens. Just because it CAN cause BG #s to rise, does not mean it will. We do not know how Scrabble will respond yet, k?
Also.. if you are like me... you want the Fortiflora now.. when I picked up some in the beginning I called my Vet first & they did not have it -- so I went to Purina's website & called them, they plugged in my zipcode & gave me a lenghty list of Vets in my area who did have it. I called one & they sold it to me since it is not a RX, they did not require that Baby was a patient. Finding it locally, saved me from shipping charges or the wait for it to arrive. However, you may be more patient than I am.

Good luck & Have a wonderful day!!

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105

Don't forget that this AB will target the infection and probably help him feel better, even if he doesn't seem sick. KB didn't mind it, in fact I think his numbers improved because whatever was ailing him might have been having more of a negative impact than the treatment.

As Scrabble's body has adjusted to diabetes, he'll continue to adjust, and this is short term in the scheme of things. Look how far he's come!

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105

Here's hoping that it will all be okay for you and Scrabble.....one step at a time, right? Bacterial infections are something we HAVE to deal with....you will be fine and you will adjust as you go along. You can also give him some plain yogurt if he will eat that...one with live cultures. Some kitties like it. But the Fortiflora is convenient to sprinkle on the food....
Hope you guys have a good day in spite of the new developments! Hugs to youz :YMHUG:

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105

I'm answering your question about the FortiFlora here. Your vet may have it on hand. You can also find it on Amazon and PetFood Direct. Just make sure you get the feline form (it's a white box). You can give a packet all at once or split it between meals.

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105

Hi Michelle, Good luck with the new antibiotic. I agree with the opinions of others: just because a drug "can" cause adverse reactions doesn't mean that it will. The drug companies have to state all the possibilities to protect themselves from lawsuits! We humans should eat yogurt with active cultures when on a lengthy program of antibiotics to keep the good bacteria in the intestines working. Lots of cats like yogurt, too (our Alice [GA] loved it). You could try Scrabble on a little plain yogurt with active cultures and see how he likes it.
Too bad about your shift reduction. Hopefully it will be temporary, and the good side is that you can spend more time with Scrabble and get more sleep for yourself! Hang in there!

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105 +3 52

HI thanks everyone, I do have the probiotic that the vet originally perscribed me that I could use in place of the fortiflora until I get some. Does plain yogurt have sugar in it? WE are @ +3 52, so close, come on Scrabble! Part of me doesn't even want to go on anymore ab because he seems totally fine and his numbers are great but the other sensible side says we don't want this coming back so get it over with now!

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105 +3 52

Good Morning Michelle
Lovely numbers for Scrabble today.
Sorry about the AB's and shift change, yesterday was not the bestest I am sure.
Let the sensible side take over.
You know he needs the meds and he will be fine.
You have the most amazing advice and support here.
Scrabble will be fine.

Chin up. 52 @ +3 - Scrabble rocks.

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105 +3 52 +4 56

+4 56
Gosh we have gotten so close to the 40's lately it isn't even funny! I keep thinking we are going to hit it!!! Was thinking we would earn a dosecrease after the 7 day mark but now I am thinking we might not because of the AB. I will be waiting to hear from the vet today. Going to go btb

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105 +3 52 +4 56

Sorry to hear about the ABs, but it looks like Scrabble is doing great for the moment! And keep watching for the 40s--Max kept barely staying above 50, and then finally threw a 48 at us yesterday and earned his decrease. :-D

Max LOVES yogurt! Seriously, if you try to sit anywhere but at the table to eat some, he'll do his darndest to knock it out of your hand so he can have some. I used to let him lick the container when I was done with one--he'll stick his whole head in it if he can, and if he can't, he'll stick his paw in to wipe up every last bit at the bottom. Now I'll have to start buying him some plain (I prefer the fruity flavors but they have sugar in them) to have as a treat every now and then.

Baytril is available in beef-flavoured taste tabs. They're a little more expensive I think, but you may have an easier time with that (or not! he's a cat!)

There have been a small number of cats whose numbers have gone up on Baytril, but higher numbers (eta: in themselves, absent a DKA) won't kill him. Infections can get really, really bad; you need to knock it out. I see from your post yesterday that a culture was done - there was a sensitivity part done too, that indicated Baytril as an appropriate antibiotic? FWIW, Meowzi's numbers did not go up on Baytril. (And yes, there is a risk, as posted in Health, of blindness - linked to higher doses of injectable Baytril - talk to your vet about it if you're concerned).

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105 +3 52 +4 56

Still waiting to hear from vet about the perscription. The main thing I am worried about is the blindness thing of course. I did post in health about this AB and a few said it won't affect his bg's so I guess we will have to just see what happens. I just want to get him started on this so we can get off of it!! Thanks everyone for your input!! Scrabble keeps hitting 52, I wonder if I used a different meter it would be in the 40's, I know there is a 10-20% variance. I know I am reaching, just want him to get a reduction!!!

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105 +3 52 +4 56

Michelle, I had the same thoughts about meter-switching the other day. :-D Max has been so close (51 and 52) to going under 50 that I just couldn't help the thought. I know once I checked him with a different meter when he was in the upper 50s and the other meter said he was at 48.

I did resist the urge to use the other meter tho. I think the consistency of the same meter is more important than trying a different meter for one special number. I also believe that before he threw the 48 yesterday I was getting input from a few on the board to go ahead and decrease him anyway because he'd had several close calls with the low 50s, and overall for the week had been within normal range. But that decision is up to you--you know your cat. My personal feeling was that Max was ready for a reduction regardless of actually having the right number to "earn" it.

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105 +3 52 +4 56

Keep testing til you get something in the 40s
Seriously, I don't think I've ever gotten the same number twice in immediate succession.

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE AMPS 105 +3 52 +4 56

lol @ MJ. Keep testing 'til you get a number you like. hehe. I've tested Checks several times in succession, with the same ear hole, and still got different numbers. My Relion meter always is higher than the Wavesense, with the same drop. A lot higher!
Lovely numbers, Michelle.

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE PMPS 93

Pmps 93 yay! Vet called & his antibiotic will be ready tomorrow @ 2. They are compounding it into a liquid & adding tuna flavor :). I am praying the ab will not affect his numbers!!!! He will be on it for 2 weeks! Keep your paws crossed for a good outcome!:)

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE PMPS 93 +2 72

+2 72
Just got home, found some more FF old labels at the grocery store! Still stressed about tomorrow starting the AB but hopefully we will not see any bad side effects! Home tonight, will retest in 2 hours

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE PMPS 93 +2 72

Looking good for a +2 tonight Michelle.
Hope all goes well with the Abs tomorrow.
I have no experience in that department.

Re: 4/8 SCRABBLE PMPS 93 +2 72

Quincy was on Baytril for two rough weeks. Not sure if you saw my post in your thread from yesterday: Quincy/Baytril

Re: probiotics, you might consider going to Trader Joe's, buying a bottle of probiotic tablets (in the vitamins section) and mixing in part of a crushed tablet.

Yogurt does have sugars - maybe not added sugars, but just check the label. If you want to go that route, I suggest buying Kefir instead (a yogurt-like drink, also available at TJ's and elsewhere). Quincy really liked it and I gave it to him after antibiotics. Haven't used it since he was diagnosed with diabetes, though - wanted to avoid anything with sugar if I could, and also was concerned something dairy might upset his system.

Good luck!

Was going to go to bed but decided to stay up and figured I would get a test +6 52 so close again!!! Probably gonna stay up a little bit more so may get another test. His nadir keeps changing so it is hard to gauge when he is going to go his lowest!!!
Laura, I did see your post, thanks, scared the hell out of me but thanks for your honesty!!
