2/19 Shasta

WCR: All Ps in place. Got a little play in this morning, but very little snuggle time last night or this morning. She did join me in the bathroom while I got ready, but I decided to bring her fuds bowl in to see if could get her to eat. Finally, she ate some of her breffis and then left. She's been drinking more water the past few weeks, but her pee totals and sizes have been normal. I don't know if that means anything. Appy is really iffy this morning and then I add some Friskies and she's fine.

Question: we have vetty appointment on Saturday, March 1st, to get blood work done. While we wait to find out what's up, I'm worried about her appy. I'm thinking I would like to call my vet to ask about an appetite stimulant. I know most of you use cypro. Is this the stimulant of choice? And why? And what is its clinical name (full name)?

I hope Shasta's appy gets better soon. I don't know about the appetite stimulant.

Cyproheptadine is the appetite stimulant and Ondansetron is the nausea medication
you'll want both because if the cat is nauseous, then you have hunger and nausea to deal with. You want to address both issues. Give the ondansetron first and wait 20 minutes and give the cypro.
My vet gave me prescriptions to take to the human pharmacy, they don't keep these drugs at our vet office.

Mirtazapine is the other stimulant. Cypro can be given twice a day, where as Mirtz is only given once every 3 days and can make cats over stimulated.
Some cats don't do so well on the Mirtz. ( and this is the one most vets keep in stock)

Thank you, Rhiannon. I will call the vet today during my planning and ask about the cypro and ondansetron. These people probably think I'm crazy every time I call, but oh well. I don't like the sound of the other appy stimulant, so I hope he doesn't insist on it. Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure my vets office thinks I'm annoying and nutso with all my questions and asking for things. But even when I cringe inside, I still do it :lol: . I hope you can get something that will work for Shasta I'm sending appy vines too, and hope you have a good evening!

Adding appy vines for Shasta. Rhiannon had the good info......ondansetron to correct the nausea; I prefer cyproheptadine over mirtz for the reason she mentioned.....it can make cats anxious.

I've used cyproheptadine a lot. Just 1/8 a 4mg pill gets Max eating. I use ondansetron for nausea and when I first start I give it at least 45 minutes before the cypro. I give ondansetron twice a day. Max needs 1/2 a pill (2mg). We started with lmg but he needed the cypro to eat. Cypro is the anecdote should a cat get a bad reaction to mirtazapine. I tried mirt with Tiffany and it made her very vocal and didn't work for more than 1 1/2 days. Once ondansetron does its job Max doesn't need cypro. I have bought it at Ralph (Kroger) with a script from my vet. It's very inexpensive. Good luck.
