Tawny is good and eats well, continues to act happy and is back up to her old tricks of trying to sneak into the forbidden food room. Her #s are in a better place for me to consistently shoot due to my work commute & schedule, however I would like to see a little less yellow. This 4.25u seems to be working well for us, I would like to see her a little lower consistently, but we'll give it a few more days.

OT Sick Civvie Buck: I dropped Buck off at the vet's this a.m., he had been heaving up nothing but bile since he won't eat. She didn't yell at me. She called me about noon and said he was anemic & dehydrated and his red blood cell count was low. She mentioned SubQs & followed that with an explanation about how she really didn't think that was a good idea in light of his being anemic b/c it would dilute his blood (she got points w/me for that one since I had just learned about this here on FDMB recently). It was like she was thinking out loud and then she said maybe she would give him just a little but not too much b/c he was so dehydrated. She also gave him a cyrenia injection and I don't remember what else, I left my notes on my desk at work. I asked for a copy of his labs, which I am going to try to upload here, I have never done this here b4. She said he could have a bile duct blockage and his bun was high, I don't really know how to read these labs but it says MCHC HIGH, NEU HIGH, BASO HIGH, his glucose was high (235) but she attributed that to stress (he has never shown any signs of diabetes but if he gets well this I will watch), TP HIGH,GLOB HIGH & TBIL HIGH. I have no idea what most of this means. & HCT LOW. She said she really didn't know & didn't have very good news for me & kind of acted like she expected me to say put him down but instead I asked if there was any kind of treatment we could try & she said "antibiotics" and I said "OK I'd like to give him a chance" and then she sounded kind of shocked and said "OK". & so off we go...

He is getting Baytril, Clavamox and she gave me some Cerenia in case he needs it. She also gave me a standing Rx for Clavamox & Cernia anytime I want it (since I have so many cats), a Lantus Rx for Tawny and a standing order for Cerenia anytime I want. Her tech said anytime I needed anything to just call (like ondansatron or mirtazpine too).

Just before I picked Buck up they said he ate, not much, but only about a spoonful of a/d. She sent me home w/2 cans of that, but he will not eat it at the moment. I did set a bowl of water in front of him tho and he drank a lot. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get a Baytril & a Clavamox into a cat that won't eat, I guess I'll liquidate them and syringe them into him. She said to wait about 1/2 hr between each. Then I'll probably try to coax him to eat some.

ETA well the scanned image of the labs is too big so I couldn't upload it.

I opened Buck a condo in Health Buck's Condo in Health & will post his updates there after today with a link to it in Tawny's LL condo here.

I just managed to syringe about 10 mls of the a/d into him. He growls at me but doesn't fight me too bad. So far I am only bleeding in one place!

He has kept the Baytril down so far and now I'm off to Clavamox him.

Desi --

I'd go for bigger guns for the vomiting. I'd ask for injectible ondansatron. It got my guys vomiting under control very quickly. The cost for a vial from my vet was $18.

Also, for a cat that's vomiting bile, I'd also be thinking about an obstruction. Did she do any x-rays of his lower GI track? Is Buck capable of ingesting things like string? (Gabby ate dental floss years ago and needed major surgery to remove it. She was vomiting bile for 48 hrs.)

Feel better, Buck! Desi, I hope he'll be lots better tomorrow. Sending many vines tonight.

Hugs,

Ella & Rusty

p.s. Try uploading the labs into a Google Doc.

I'm glad Tasny is doing so well :-D

Many prayers and healing vines for Buck. I hope he will eat soon. Curious she gave him baytril AND clavamox.

You probably don't remember but Gracie had a bile duct infection and was on clavamox for several months. Baytril is generally an a/b for the urinary tract.

If she thinks he has a bile duct obstruction, they can do an u/s or a bile acid assay. Typically, the ALT would be elevated as well as some of the other numbers you quoted. I'm also curious why she didn't prescribe ursodiol. It's very good for bile duct/liver issues.

Have you ever seen the recipe for Liver Shake for sick cats? I made it for Gus and he loved it.

I hope he is better soon.

Sienne,

I wondered about obstruction myself & was kind of surprised she didn't mention the possibility, or suggest x-rays or an ultrasound. I will check my invoice, maybe she did that & just didn't mention it. If the vomiting comes back I will ask her about the injectible ondansatron, for now at least he has not vomited or heaved since yesterday morning, including when I gave him his meds last night, syringe fed him or this morning after he ate a little on his own. He gags some tho, I am still wondering about an obstruction myself.

I thought it curious too that she gave him both clav & baytril, I asked about that & I'm not sure I really got a clear answer other than that she wanted to cover every possibility. On his labs the ALT is 95 U/L, within normal range according to the chart. I will check out the liver shake recipe, thanks.

He did eat on his own a little this morning, not much but it's a start. He is moving around a little more too. & his tail is up.

Tonight when I open a Tawny condo I will put a link to Buck's Health post in & post over there about him.

Thank all.

Desi
