yesterday's condo

Today he got MC food for breakfast to prevent the drop.

He snuck around front and got into the "Kitty Crack" again, but I caught him when I was mowing the lawn.

I just checked him at +5 and he is TOO low, even with the Crack earlier. I do not understand this cat. It's like, no matter what
happens, his sugar WILL drop too low by +5, but only during daylight hours. At night, it's like the insulin barely works at all. Why?
What do I need to do?

Yes, it looks like he's going low during the AM cycle and then bouncing by the PM cycle....but then he's clearing the bounce in record time

Is it *possible*, just maybe, that Dimitri had Transient Diabetes only, from his UTI that the vet diagnosed the same day he diagnosed him with diabetes?

Yes, it's possible, especially if you changed his diet to low carb and treated the infection about the same time...it would explain why he's all the sudden racing down the dose ladder too.

You should go ahead and decrease to .25 tonight. IF his preshot is really high (like 250+) you might go ahead and "shoot through the bounce" and give the .5 one more time, but tomorrow morning, you'd want to take the reduction to .25

Don't know what you're going to do about Dimitri getting into the dry, but if he IS going into remission, it'll be very important that you figure out how to keep him from getting it. (maybe a little kitty muzzle if he's going outside?...LOL)

Did you feed that 48 ? The rule of thumb is "feed the 40s"
At what point in the cycle did he get into the contraband?

I agree with Chris- you need to come up with a strategy to ensure the big D is not able to access any contraband.

Yes, I agree, I think I may just stop putting out the food on the porch because there is only one feral cat that comes by anymore, and I'm pretty
sure he eats at other places too.

Big D got into the Crack around the +3.5 - +4 mark. That's why I was so shocked to see the 48. And yes, I fed him at that point, and then just
a little bit more when I got the 57. I'm about to recheck.

So I will wait and see what his PMPS is, if it's too high, I'll shot 0.5, but if it's not too bad, I'll go ahead and decrease, otherwise I'll wait
and decrease in the morning.

He's up to 62. I will recheck in a little bit to make sure he's heading up.

Dimitri is not what I would call 'bouncy'.
He has made several trips to the lowlands (30s and 40s) in the past week and each time I've been bracing for a trip to the stratosphere.
Yet the highest BG you have caught is 231. . . .and he was back in the 40s in 14 hours later.
Even the contraband incident of 04/22 didn't knock him off track for long- I think he is on a mission.

So, my $0.02 is that based on the above I'm inclined to recommend you take the reduction to 0.25u tonight rather than 'shoot through the bounce'.

I feed ferals, and have a non-profit cat rescue.. cat_pet_icon

I definitely want your Dimitri to heal from this FD.. but do you think you could possibly move that kibble contraband for the feral to a different location outside of your porch so that the feral can still access it? You might be his or her only "safe" feeding zone. Just make sure it is in a covered location so that the rain doesn't get to it.

Although there is not a 'typical' bounce, yes after a visit to the 30s kitties can go as high as red and beyond and then take 3 days to clear it.

My Black Kitty saw his first green, a 64, on 08/26/2008 at AM+5 (nearly 6 months after starting insulin).
His liver protested loudly
By PMPS he was 385. AMPS the next day he was 482 and his AMPS on 08/28/2002 (nearly 48 hours after that 64) was 528 :shock:
It was 5 days before I saw yellow again.

Tina, yes, there may be a location way in the backyard where I can put the food out, but have it out of sight of Dimitri.

i'm glad you reduced tonight. when a cat has moved into the phase that dimitri is in - the bounces are small and don't last long, the reductions are holding and he is going down the dosing scale, that is the time to stop shooting through the bounce. you can no longer assume a bounce will go high and stay there, which is the purpose for shooting through a bounce.

if it were me, i'd do whatever it takes to keep him from getting into any dry food at all. i'm not sure "out of sight" is enough to keep a cat from finding kitty crack. punkin would've been able to smell it a block away. before he was diabetic i discovered he was eating dry food at the neighbor's garage. they left their garage door open 6" for their cat, so he just went in and helped himself.

can dimitri become an indoor cat? that would let you keep feeding the feral while preventing him from getting into it ever. we transitioned punkin into an indoor cat when he was around 8 or 9. he adjusted.

Julie, Punkin sounds like my middle son - I cannot ever have any chocolate in the house, no matter where I hide it, because
he will find it and eat it all. LOL I will have to think about the outdoor food some more because I do agree that Dimitri
will likely hunt it down, no matter where I try to hide it. I like being able to let him out because "normally" all he does is
go lay in the sunshine on the patio. Unless he's on a mission...
