Yesterday's Condo

I know I am posting so late that this won't be seen until Wed morning, but I wanted to get it done anyway, as I will probably be posting late tomorrow, too.

First off, I don't know what the heck is going on with CInco, but I'm pretty sure China is involved somehow! He seemed to be all set to surf blue this morning when I left, so I didn't bother to test when I got home this afternoon, and then he gives us a PMPS of 102! :o  I meant to check him at PM+2 or 2.5, but of course didn't get it done, and there he was, smack in the middle of the lagoon at +3.5! I wasn't so surprised once I saw that China is keeping Chris up tonight, too. I guess he must have seen my condo yesterday, when I talked about the possibility of a dosecrease! That is off the table for now, obviously.

Regarding Sasha: I got a call bright and early this morning from the UCD Oncology department. They had appointments available today, so we cancelled the appointment we had with the surgeon and we met with the oncologist at 11:30. She was delighted with Sasha's progress, and as usual, Sasha charmed everyone she came into contact with. One nurse informed me that they had decided to keep her, so I could just pay the bill and go home! :o  The oncologist found that the incision was healed nicely, as was the eye ulcer. She basically told me the same things the surgeon did - that they were very surprised to find that the cancer cells were going up the neck, and that although they could do another surgery and remove more tissue, they wouldn't be sure they got it all and would have to do radiation anyway. They don't want to put her (and us) through that, and doing so would delay radiation, which they feel should start ASAP. She said they were surprised to find, when they were removing the leg and surrounding tissue, that there was regrowth at the original site of the tumor. She said this is obviously a very aggressive cancer, and that's why they want to move quickly. They took blood for a full panel today, so they would have the results before the scan. I got a call late this evening saying the BW looked great. We scheduled a CT scan for this Thursday, and then the radiation oncologist will contact us to set up the radiation schedule. What they find on the scan will also help them determine if chemo will be necessary after radiation is completed. Right now, they expect that it will be. So far, they are not willing to give me the odds of getting her through this and having x number of years of quality time. I may be able to get more of that kind of info after the scan. My DH is concerned about putting her through all this and then having the cancer come back a few months later, and having to start again. I feel that, as long as her QOL is good (which it is right now), I will do whatever is recommended to prolong her life. Should the QOL deteriorate, we can reevaluate our plan then. Gaining her six months isn't worth it if it's six months of misery. So we are just going with the flow right now and we'll see what we find out Thursday. As always, prayers and vines are greatly appreciated.

BTW, the collar is off!!! dancing_cat Sasha didn't waste any time in having a thorough bath, although it was a challenge, given her new balance issues. There are also no restrictions on activity, so the cage will be disassembled tomorrow and I have my nighttime cuddle companion back! :-D

I go for my first post-op check up tomorrow. I am going to look into getting a "knee walker", as I am an accident waiting to happen on crutches, and crawling around the house on all fours is killing my knees. I think the knee walker would be more stable, and should I have to transport Sasha to her radiation therapy daily, I would do better with her in a backpack if I had the walker. There is another option, if we feel I can't transport her safely. There is a lady in the nearby town of Woodland that is an RVT and she runs a boarding facility. She will take the pet back and forth for treatment and board it during the week, then you take it home for the weekend. I'm not excited about having her staying with a stranger for so long, but if we can't work out getting her there, it's something to consider. The oncologist told me that she boards her own dog there when she travels. This lady used to work at UCD. My radar went up immediately, and I plan to talk to her to see if she would take Cinco when we need to board him. Sounds like she is someone that could handle testing and shooting on schedule! Paws crossed!

Getting Sasha there today was not too bad. Mark was working from home, so he put her in the car, and when I got there I went in and checked in and they sent a nurse out right away to bring her in. Afterwards, the doctor herself carried Sasha out to the car and put her in for me! These are great people I'm dealing with. I get so much peace of mind from them.

Sorry for the long, late condo. I know some of you are interested in hearing about Sasha, so I wanted to get it up now. I am going to a funeral in the morning (a long time neighbor), and then to my doctor appointment in the afternoon, so it will be late before I get online tomorrow.

Sending healing vines to all in need, and hugs to all their beans. :YMHUG:

I hope Cinco finally let you get some sleep last night.

It sounds like you have some wonderful people helping Sasha. I'm sorry you're having to deal with all of this, but I know that helps. I hope the radiation will be all that is needed. Sending prayers and hugs. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

I'm sure that bath felt really good to her. I hope you get to enjoy some snuggles with her soon.

Sending prayers to your neighbor's family.

I hope your doctor appointment goes well today.

Looks like Cinco had a very nice surf last night....love those flat greens!!

Another great report for the beautiful sweet Sasha. I'm sorry you and she are having to go through all this, but UCD does sound like an amazing and caring place. Sending tons of prayers that radiation will be all Sasha needs to kick this thing in the butt. Hopefully boarding her won't have to happen, but it sounds like you may have found the answer for Cinco if he needs a petsitter....fingers and paws crossed on that!

I take it your toe situation doesn't qualify for a "boot"? When I had my bunion surgeries, I had a hard boot (it looked kind of like a ski boot) that I could remove when sitting and sleeping, but had to wear for 4 weeks when walking. I actually walked out of the surgery center the days of the procedure! I never even had to try crutches....I've heard they are a bear to deal with. I hope your toe is back to 100% very soon!

Thank you for the update, Tricia. Big hugs to you and Mark, your kitties are lucky to have such great beans. Tons of vines for Sasha and you and the regular ones for Cinco. I'm sorry about your neighbor.

Hi Tricia,

This all sounds very encouraging and I know that you are making the right decisions for Sasha. It's great that you have such good doctors and other support people. My niece had one of those knee scooters when she had to have her toe broken and re-set. She used it both at work (office work) and at home and thought it was great.

Thanks for the update.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Surf safe, Cinco!! The LagoonMeister is way up on shore, getting over his fur shot.

Sounds like you have some great people there, Tricia!

I know it's frightening to hear the tumor is growing so quickly, but we all know that Sasha's QOL is what's most important to you, and it sounds like she's doing so well right now that it's worth the attempt at the radiation

Hopefully you'll figure out the best way to get her there and back! You just got your snuggle buddy back and I know you'd miss her terribly no matter how much you trusted where she was, but it's really great that it sounds like you might have some options..especially for Cinco if you need to leave him with someone else for awhile to take care of!

Cinco...you and China are going to be banned from the next few OTJ parties if you don't stop plotting against us beans! We can't sleep the other 20 hours a day like you guys can!
