Well, my husband and I decided to get away for the day and left someone in charge of Booger's care after her AM injection. They were to come over and let my inside dog out and check on the 3 kitties and feed her a light meal (2 small, pre-selected cans between the 3 cats). We came home to find the swinging gate to the "kitty room" open and the food bowls misplaced. One was turned upside down, one in the hallway and one where it was supposed to be. I called and asked what was fed. I was told "2 big purple cans".. not what I had suggested.. and I don't even know how much they got before the dog backed them in the corner.. so I dunno how much of this is food spike or stress spike and I don't know how long to expect it to last.. We are wanting to take an overnight trip in October.. I've seriously got to figure out a reliable and capable pet sitter... Plan A: fail.

that's too bad. The high numbers at +8, though, might be a bounce number rather than from eating high carbs. it'll be more telling in another couple of hours, or at preshot.

I considered that option too.. the food was fed around 1:00 PM if that makes a difference although I know there's no way to know... (Or for me to know.. you guys might be able to tell).. I'm just kicking myself for even going now..

Don't blame yourself!

It's important to occasionally do something for the bean, even if it might make the cat backstep a little....a day or two higher in the grand scheme of things isn't going to really hurt anything.

This disease is just plain tough to deal with...more for us beans since we know all that "could" go wrong, so it's important to take care of yourself too

Have you looked into professional (paid) petsitting services? Might be worth looking into when you have enough time to really interview people as well as train them to the way you want things done

Don't worry...No matter what caused the +8, this too shall pass :-D

Thanks Chris,
It's hard not to when she was just starting to look a little better. I have checked into it but I have only found one in my area that will even consider glucose monitoring so far.. and they won't accept Booger in my home because I'm out of their distance range.. they will consider her if we drive her to them though.. I'm still investigating that possibility.

I have barely left the house (besides work) since she started insulin and I'm trying really hard to get it right.. and I always worry about her like you said.. I just hate this happened the first time I did. That's higher than she's been on the AT most days..

So far she seems to be feeling ok so I hope it does pass quickly and without harm to her..

I agree with the others - you can't beat yourself up about what happened. We took Jersey on a trip with us once so we could see a concert (the only time we tried to get out and do something in four months). It was terrible - she wouldn't eat, so we reduced her insulin that evening. Her numbers were high, but they came back down quickly. In the grand scheme of things, it was just a little blip on the radar. It looks like Booger has already started to recover from the day's events.

I've seen others on these boards mention checking with local colleges - there might be some vet tech/pre-vet students there who would be willing to test. I don't know if that's an option where you live, but I thought I would throw it out there just in case.

Don't forget to take care of yourself in this process!
Shelly

Thank you Shelly. Yes she has started to come down some which I am thankful for. Hopefully she didn't get too far off track. Thanks for the encouragement and sharing your story. Hopefully it will be a small blip for her as well.

I will check with the colleges around here. I hadn't thought about that and there are actually a few that are close. I also need to check with the vets offices to see if their techs may offer that service as well.
