Clare's bouncing this AM, hopefully a short one. I wish she wouldn't go so high, but she seems fine and it was so encouraging to see the green number yesterday night.

Our baby scale arrived today, so we're going to keep checking her weight and the food we're giving her to see what that teaches us. Her appy changes every couple of days for different foods. Fortunately what's not "in" one day can be so just a week later.

Speaking of food, we've thrown out all of the Wellness Beef and Chicken that we had in the cupboard. I'm wondering if it was the culprit for the huge spike in her BGs a few days ago, since we hadn't fed any to her in a long while. I will be calling the company with the lot number, just to let them know about Clare's BG spike and to say that the sad story of Talbot and his littermates has had an effect on my thinking about their product.

Have a great day, everyone!

Hi Georgette, I hope Clare slides down today, safely of course!

I read your post and the one on Talbot's condo as well. My Tiger also eats Wellness chicken, plus the Core Turkey,Chicken and chicken liver, alternating with Purina DM. Can you describe the incident with Clare? I get that she had elevated BG, but you mentioned blood in the stool, but when i went to look for any more information, I could not find any other reference to it?

Short bounce, Clare. And a gentle c'mon down.

Snow up there? Thirteen years away from SPASH and I still get excited about the prospect of a snow day! Habits are hard to break!

Hi Georgette,
I hope that Clare comes down for you today and that she is over whatever was her problem.
That's strange about the Wellness. We feed Wellness Chicken and Wellness Turkey (only those two varieties since Rusty is allergic to both beef and fish). We haven't ever had a health problem, but several years ago Rusty refused to eat the food from the USA plant. Now I look at each can to make sure I am getting the "Product of Canada" (3.5 oz. cans only; the other size cans are "made in USA").

I like the Wellness because it has a high calorie content and Rusty needs to keep his weight up. Also, it is only 4% carbs.

Have a good evening,

Ella & Rusty

Hi Ruth and Ella,

You had asked about the incident with the Wellness. We didn't really make a connection until the terrible problem that affected Talbot and his two littermates.

On the 17th of this month (see Clare's spreadsheet) Clare had a very high spike in her BGs into the "blacks" for a couple of hours and very high all day. On the same day, I noticed a little bit of bright red blood in her stool. I also knew she'd caught and eaten a mouse that morning, and although it hadn't happened before I thought perhaps the high BGs and the blood had to do with the mouse.

The next day (the 18th) she was still high but not up to the highs of the day before. She was eating well and had no more blood in her stool. She never vomited. The next day, yesterday, she had a good low cycle. That's when I read about Talbot passing away, and the story of how all three littermates had had pancreatitis and had vomited bloody froth and had bloody stools. Xena and Sam recovered but Talbot, sadly did not.

Then it occurred to me that we had opened a can of Wellness and had been feeding it to our two cats at about that time. It was one of the large cans, Beef and Chicken, so it must have been from the U.S. I had been excited about Wellness, too, because we're trying to lower Clare's carbs and lower her phosporous, both, and so it really was a good fit. She hadn't much liked it the first time, so we'd waited until a few days ago to try her on it again.

Both cats weren't eating well the last couple of days, so it may not have been the Wellness; but then again, they both had been eating it. Together they had about 7 oz over the two days.

That's about all I know. I just decided not to take any chances, and I'll call Wellness to let them know what happened, and give them the lot number. What you're saying about making sure it's a Product of Canada makes sense, Ella. I'll double check the cans I threw out but they were the taller ones.

I'll let you know what Wellness says, if anything, when I connect with them. I'll probably call tomorrow.

Have a good night,

Georgette

Hi Georgette

I feed mainly Merrick but also toss in some WN chicken, turkey, and beef/chicken. Gracie at those three for many years but when WN consolidated some of their plants, the product seemed to change and she was just ok with it. When I just have it in the mix of all the foods, she eats it better. She's had no issues.

I wouldn't think the WN would cause a spike in the BG. It just looked to me like Clare had a royal bounce after the greens the night before.

When I look at Clare's SS, I just think she could use more insulin. Yes, she is getting into green occasionally but I think you might see a little more green with a higher dose. If she were my kitty, I'd increase to 0.5u bid.

I would be interested in hearing what WN has to say if you get a chance to update us.

Have a great night!
