Mikey has been "off" the past 10 days or so. The way the house is situated (we moved) I am now able to see any cat that is drinking and how often. He's been at the water dish often. It was not until about 3 days ago when I noticed he seemed "thin" for his big frame. This morning something told me to test him. He was 227. No urine ketones. Should I just go ahead and give .5u? I see in his SS that I did that the last time he was that high (although that was from prednisolone) Taking him to the vet Friday am. it's the only time they had.

This is just my opinion, but I would wait until the vet gives the OK before restarting the juice, just in case something else is causing the higher numbers. One test is not enough to determine for sure that he needs to got back on the juice. Until you get to the vet, I would continue testing for ketones, do some random BG checks, and keep a close eye on his behaviors.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I figured I would test a few more times. His last blood work was in May so lots could have changed since then. Thanks for the advice. Just SO glad I am able to test him

I agree with Amy -- get him checked out. Also, let him settle down from the stress of moving. If he does well with Feliway, you might consider putting a few diffusers around the house to help him de-stress from the move.

Also, has he had a dental anytime in the recent past? If not, make sure the vet gets as good a look as he can at Mikey's teeth!

He's had 2 dentals- a cleaning/extraction and then roots needed to be removed, but I think that was about 2 years ago. Thankfully, this new vet is very good with dentals. I have had 3 cats done already. My other vet used to say it didn't need to be done because "he saw worse".

I have feilway plugged in one room but was thinking of adding to another. I just saw a post from a friend though who had her plugged in to an outlet that was not grounded and most of our outlets are not (we have an electrician currently working on grounding them all) so once that is done I will add the second.

Hi Jenn!

Apparently Mikey was feeling left out? Hoping this is just a bump in the road for all of you.

Mikey - not cool buddy. You don't really want juice and sharp things in your stocking, right?

Carl

Hi Carl!!!! How have you been!??? Such a great feeling to "see" familiar names!

Vet wanted me to use Vetsulin I told him I already had Lantus at home and Mikey did rather well on it before so he said it was ok to use. He wanted me to give 2u SID but I thought 2u was a bit much (even with a BG of 466 while at the vet, 266 right before we left). I just wasn't sure what would happen so I opted to give him 1u. Low and behold at his PMBG he was 121. I didn't give him insulin. Still waiting for blood results tomorrow.

What does "transient" mean? I personally think something else is going on. He was 102 this morning. I only gave him 1u yesterday morning. His coat is full of those white flakes. He lost about 2lbs since May.He is moving very slow, almost like arthritis but yet can climb 12 stairs. Still waiting on blood results.

Well, UTIs are easily treated w/ ABs so that's actually good. They are usually painful, that could be why he's moving slowly. I'd give the bupe if you have it (cats hide pain really well), at least for a day or two until the ABs take effect.

What Ab are you getting and do you know what bacteria was found? Did they send the sample out for a C&S? The first AB most vets choose is Clavamox, but a lot of cats get very upset stomachs w/ it. Tess would throw up half an hour after getting it, like clockwork. She was switched to Orbax and hasn't had a problem w/ it at all. It may not be the correct AB for the type of bacteria Mikey has, though. It works well for e-coli.

You may want to snag some probiotic - ex Forti Flora - to give a couple hours after the antibiotic. This will help recolonize with good bacteria, and may help reduce diarrhea as a side effect of the antibiotic.

He was given Orbax. He is doing really well, physically. Looks to have put on weight, not dehydrated, eyes are open, moving around more, no more white flakes on his coat but his BG's are still pretty high. Of course with the holidays I haven't been able to keep a good insulin schedule or do much testing. Hoping that will change this week and now I have to figure of this new FDBM

His AMPS today 12/30 was 272
