Last night wasn't a good one for me. I visited Belle around 7:00PM and stayed for 2 hours. She was more out of it than she has been, and I was concerned. The nurse that takes care of her at night said the same thing when she came in. She did eat, and her tail was wagging, but she was just out of it. About 10:15 last night, I got a call from the doctor to ask me how I thought Belle was doing, and to update me on a few things. I told her that Belle seemed out of it, and she told me that they had switched her from Fentanyl to Buprenex. That explained the zoned out look. I tried Buprenex at home and even at half the lowest recommended dose, Belle couldn't walk, and was completely out of it. She would sleep in her water and food bowls. She is being put back on Fentanyl.

The vet also told me that because her fourth transfusion was whole blood and the volume was greater than a Packed Red Blood Cell transfusion, they needed to split it up into two administrations. The first one was done, but somehow during a shift change, they never did the second part. Even so, after half a transfusion, her PCV didn't change and was still 15%. That concerned the doctor. On top of that, her catheter blew(maybe the reason the transfusion didn't do anything) and the only spot left to put one was in her jugular. That required sedation, and more risk since her blood pressure has been low when her PCV drops. Without it though, they wouldn't be able to do any more transfusions or fluids. Fortunately, that went well, and they brought more blood in around midnight to give her a full transfusion. This morning, her PCV was up to 21%, and they said she is alert and eating. So I'm having a better morning knowing she is ok for the moment. Today will be a rough day waiting to see if the PCV holds.

This is still such a roller coaster. I refuse to give up since she beat the anemia once. I could buy a car with what this will all cost, but all I want is my Belle. I do wonder if I'm putting her through to much, but since we're just fighting the anemia now, it seems to make sense. There is still now way to know if she'll make it. Her PCV levels need to hold, and they haven't done that so far. Even if they do, she could relapse at any time. It's only been a month since she recovered from her first bout. In any case, all I want is to get her home and we'll figure out tomorrow, tomorrow.

Re: 5/6 Belle- Recovery Update Day 4

Jason, I'm so glad to hear that she's hanging in there. I do think it's reasonable to keep fighting; I always think it is, as long as there is a reasonable chance that an animal will get back home and have a good quality of life.

I am a little concerned about the transfusions. Hopefully her PCV will hold; if not, and the vet calls again for permission, ask her if Belle is symptomatic for her anemia. If she is (breathing fast, fast heart rate, etc) then there isn't a lot of choice. If she isn't, then ask if there are benefits to holding tight for a while. In the end, Belle has to take care of this herself -- stop destroying cells, start making enough of her own -- and if she can tolerate the anemia for the time it takes for her to do that, that may be best. Each new influx of foreign blood can rev up her immune system and there is also the matter of volume -- it is a lot of work for her to accomodate a frequent major influx of fluid into her heart and circulation. Just things to consider, ok?

Re: 5/6 Belle- Recovery Update Day 4

Jess,

I'm totally with you on the transfusions, but initially she was dropping like a rock. After her first two transfusions, she ended up lower than when she started. Good news is, this last one seems to be doing ok. She was at 22% after, dropped to 21%, and is now back at 22% almost 24 hours later. All these transfusion have caused some concern though. When I was in visiting today, the doctor came in and said they saw fluid in Belle's abdomen, and it was one of three things:
1. inflammation 2. fluid overload 3. Intestinal bleeding. I automatically assumed intestinal leakage at that she was doomed. As it turns out, when they were going in to get some fluid to test, they noticed it was almost gone. They think it was fluid overload and it makes sense as they had also heard a heart gallop. They stopped other fluids and she seems to be ok. But it did put a mighty scare into me.

Now the really good news. All the biopsies came back negative for cancer. She has some serious inflammation issues, but nothing that can't be treated. She still needs to get through these next few days of healing and she should be ok. That's no given, but it's as good as we could hope for.

Yup, I bet she was overloaded. Her heart is probably huge right now, so they need to be careful with fluids in the near future. Glad to hear about the negative biopsies and that she has four paws on the road to recovery :)

hang on, Jason and Belle, it sounds like things are heading in the right direction. I hope you can get your girl home soon and that all the values hold where they are supposed to. Great news about the biopsies!

This board is so uplifting. This week would have been very difficult without all of you.

Just got word her PCV is up to 23%, so she seems to be on the right track. They said she is very alert and begging for attention, rubbing up on the cage door every time someone walks by. She is ready to come home. Heal my sweet baby Belle, heal!

Jason

Because she was on the prednisolone, there is the potential for the intestines to bleed, and the danger is in days 3-7. Officially, day 7 ends 4:00PM Sunday, so there are still a few days of concern. If all goes well, I'm hoping Monday. She did pop a few staples on her belly and a tiny section opened up, so she is healing slowly. Hopefully she can make it through the danger zone and get home safe.

:YMHUG: Great news, Jason!!! Any idea when Belle can be brought home?

Great PCV! Go Belle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved the video. When Latte was in the hospital (multiple times) and I would bring her home, a vet tech friend would always ask me when I questioned if I was doing the right thing...is she alert and responsive? Belle is obviously alert and responsive! That was so wonderful to see.

Latte is a steroid induced diabetic, and must continue on the steroids. Its quite the catch 22 with that medicine in many regards. I feel for you there. But remember, Belle is a fighter. And, she is so well loved and cared for. What better recipe could you have for a full recovery!

Great news Jason.
Hoping she will be back home in your loving arms very very soon.
Aren't you glad you found this board just at the right time for all of our healing and support?
It is the most wonderful place to be.
Sending healing vines to Belle.
