Last night wasn't a good one for me. I visited Belle around 7:00PM and stayed for 2 hours. She was more out of it than she has been, and I was concerned. The nurse that takes care of her at night said the same thing when she came in. She did eat, and her tail was wagging, but she was just out of it. About 10:15 last night, I got a call from the doctor to ask me how I thought Belle was doing, and to update me on a few things. I told her that Belle seemed out of it, and she told me that they had switched her from Fentanyl to Buprenex. That explained the zoned out look. I tried Buprenex at home and even at half the lowest recommended dose, Belle couldn't walk, and was completely out of it. She would sleep in her water and food bowls. She is being put back on Fentanyl.
The vet also told me that because her fourth transfusion was whole blood and the volume was greater than a Packed Red Blood Cell transfusion, they needed to split it up into two administrations. The first one was done, but somehow during a shift change, they never did the second part. Even so, after half a transfusion, her PCV didn't change and was still 15%. That concerned the doctor. On top of that, her catheter blew(maybe the reason the transfusion didn't do anything) and the only spot left to put one was in her jugular. That required sedation, and more risk since her blood pressure has been low when her PCV drops. Without it though, they wouldn't be able to do any more transfusions or fluids. Fortunately, that went well, and they brought more blood in around midnight to give her a full transfusion. This morning, her PCV was up to 21%, and they said she is alert and eating. So I'm having a better morning knowing she is ok for the moment. Today will be a rough day waiting to see if the PCV holds.
This is still such a roller coaster. I refuse to give up since she beat the anemia once. I could buy a car with what this will all cost, but all I want is my Belle. I do wonder if I'm putting her through to much, but since we're just fighting the anemia now, it seems to make sense. There is still now way to know if she'll make it. Her PCV levels need to hold, and they haven't done that so far. Even if they do, she could relapse at any time. It's only been a month since she recovered from her first bout. In any case, all I want is to get her home and we'll figure out tomorrow, tomorrow.
