Bounce!

Well, that's to be expected after yesterday's excitement.

I'm almost relieved.

Bad news: the day is not starting out quite as well as yesterday. My laptop is running super-slow and not looking good. And after all that talk about switching to 1/2" needles to avoid fur shots... I think I may have given a fur shot. Not sure how - I was trying to be gentle so she doesn't get afraid of the shots. It went better than yesterday (when she cried out). No cries. But then I smelled Lantus on her fur. Now - some could have gotten on the needle or syringe when I was measuring out the extra in the sink, but I just don't know. THEN, I accidentally stuck my finger with the needle. Awesome.

Also - her appetite was not great this AM. She barely ate until I stepped in to keep fluffing the food. Then I got out the old chicken dust and she ate up her full 2 Tbsp breakfast. I'll give her a little more before I leave for work.

The vet tech is stopping by this AM to change Blue's bandage. I didn't want to mention yesterday - on Kasha's birthday condo - but I made the appointment for Blue's amputation (right leg due to tumor on his food that is necrotic). Next Monday - 7 June. I hope I'm making the right decision. And that I haven't waited too long. Now I need to borrow or buy a large dog crate or something to keep him in while he recovers.

Nothing ever seems to just be quiet and peaceful anymore. Always the drama...

Yesterday - Birthday condo

Hi Krys,
I'm sorry to hear about your other kitty, Blue, and the upcoming surgery. It's a difficult decision, but I'm sure you've thought about it and weighed all the pros and cons. If you smelled the Lantus, it most likely was a fur shot, but sometimes a little of the insulin get in, too! Once in a while Maggie flinches as I also use the 1/2" needle, but it's when I do it on the side.

Oh I hate it when my computer is slow. I hope the day gets better. Maggie likes to do more slurping than eating, and at times I try hand feeding her. I hope Kasha's numbers come down and her appetite improves. Hang in there.

Sorry, I didn't visit yesterday: Happy Birthday Kasha  !!!

I switched to the 1/2 inch needles because Jojo said J.D. is a big boy and I needed to get the insulin in deeper under his skin, I think is what she said.

You might try one to these Walmart Pop-Open Dog Crate. I bought the Large and it is pretty roomy (can hold a litter box and bowls with a little room to lie down, but the extra large might be a little better.

I hope your day gets better. Will keep Blue in my prayers.

Well, best do some extra tests on YOURSELF today! Might be a good excuse for some chocolate later on if your sugar runs low. ;-) it HURTS when you stick yourself...done it many times with subq needles. I always consider it a reminder of how it feels for Latte, and find myself better able to empathize with her.

Im very sorry to hear about your other cat. You are so admirable, with all the care you have given to your furbabies. You certainly have your hands full...and all by yourself! I will keep you all in my thoughts as you go through this next journey together.

Well... I have a bar of good chocolate sitting on my desk right now - just in case my blood sugar drops ;-)

Yeah, I do have my hands full right now. I thought I'd have a little more support, but people disappeared into the woodwork, more or less. Thank god my parents are so awesome - they've been right by my side through most of this with me. My dad even stops in to check on Kasha when he's around my house - and he is SOOOO not an animal person! I do have one friend who can't do much to physically help out, but she's there for moral support. And then there's this forum (you're all aweome!). Everyone else is MIA... and they can pretty much stay that way as far as I'm concerned!

Hey Carolyn, you've got your hands pretty full too - but it looked like Latte was liking her some Levemir yesterday!!!! Here's to more blues and greens (but not too green!)!!!!

Thanks, Dyana - I'll take a look at that. I'm torn between buying a soft-sided crate or a wire crate (found some on Amazon pretty cheap), knowing that Blue can chew through things if he wants - I just don't know what to expect from him. I don't want him to bounce it across the room either!

If I get a hard/wire-sided crate, I may be able to reuse it with the feral cats at my barn for spaying and neutering (provided I ever have the chance to think of them - I'm a little preoccupied with my furbabies at home now).

He'll have to learn how to get around on 3 legs, I'm really, really scared about what that will be like. If it turns into a nightmare for him, I will have to make the decision to NOT let him suffer...

Well now, maybe it wasn't a fur shot this AM - she was 255 at +11...

I made sure to wash my hands immediately prior to giving her shot tonight, just to make sure no Lantus got on my hands. I got the needle in slowly and deliberately. Seems like the opposite of what would work, but she didn't cry until I pushed the Lantus in - then she gave a little cry of complaint - I don't know if it's because the Lantus stings - as I've heard it does in larger doses - or if I move the needle a little when I push the plunger down.

She ate about 2 Tbsp FF for dinner. I got out the chicken dust to move things along. She is the most inefficient eater with canned food. She licks and licks and will only rarely take a little bite if I pile it into a perfect pyramid or ... if there is chicken dust on it. Then she takes bites and the food disappears in no time. At least, that's how things are working this week  I could have probably gotten her to eat more, but I can give her little bits over the course of the night. I think it may be better to take the food away while she's still a little interested - then she doesn't feel so much like I'm forcing her to eat more and more.

Everyone was hiding when I got home. Guessing partly because the vet tech was over today to change Blue's bandage. She left me a note saying that she didn't see Kasha at all - just at Kasha had planned. Kasha does not like the vet techs after her syringe feeding while I was on vacation.

On the civilian front: I ordered a dog crate today from Amazon for Blue's recovery next week. Pretty big metal one, folds up. Decent price. I also randomly found a site (while looking for something about litter boxes) by a support group for amputee kitties - the Feline Vaccine Associated Sarcoma Support Group. I don't know that Blue's tumor is vaccine associated, but I don't know that it's not. And the site I found was "A Guide for Amputee Caretakers" - how perfect was that? It made me feel so much better to read it - the first paragraph on the page has the heading "First thing is, Don't Panic! ". I also read about some kitties who had undergone an amputation and how quickly they adapted. Still really scary, but it gave me hope that I'm making the right decision. The only concern is that I've waited too long. But I did have a lot going on the last few mos...

Time to clean litter and try to go for a walk to clear my head...

Kasha's rebound are not too too long anymore! She's be back surfing the blues in no time I'm sure.

I'm sorry to hear about Blue; tough decision indeed. I'll be keeping you and Blue in my thoughts.

Krys -

Drop a PM to Joyce/Tuscany. She had a civvie that was an amputee and has been through the experience first hand. I believe she said the first week was hard. Once her kitty was out of the crate, it was difficult going but once the kitty adapted, it was just fine.

You have had your hands very full and you're doing an amazing job of juggling everything - especially the emotional ups and downs.

Thanks, Sienne. I think my BF(?) might disagree with you about that last part. You might have cause to reconsider your words after I wig out next week!

I think there are plenty of posts out there from the past month or so to prove I can lose my mind with the best (and worst) of them!
