PM update. The Purr Man is kinda tired today. Didn't drag me out for a walk tonight, he just wanted to nap. I did too so I put on the jazz station and we had a quiet nap all snuggled up on the bean bed.
He gets up, yawn, scratch, streeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttttttttttttccccccccccccccccccccccccchhhhhhhhh. Amazing how a foot long cat can stretch out to 4 feet long after a good nap. HA HA! He could be a yoga master some of the positions he sleeps in too. Hind legs left, complete twist in center of body, front legs right, head upside down. Hold that position for 3 hours and smile. UGH! How do they do that?
Just look at this face!
Gimme that sandwich, you know you want to!

They're like potato chips. No one can have just one.

AM:HI all!

Everything looks great.

*The hardest thing about all of this is getting this critter to eat when he's supposed to! He's 15 and he's a cat. He doesn't adhere to anyone's rules but his own and never has so he thinks, Hmmmm, bean wants me to eat, think I'll go sniff the floor, oh and look! A butterfly out the window. Must lick my paw first.

Meanwhile the minutes are ticking away and my heart is pounding. So his shot was 8 minutes late this morning.

So what do I do when I can't get him to eat for say a half an hour or more after his scheduled shot time? I know it's going to happen so I want to be prepared. I do pick up his food so he's had nothing for two hours before shot time.
Does the dose need to be changed and how much based on how late?

Good morning Myla. ~O) 15 minutes late is A-OK. They do have a mind of their own don't they? Since Lantus has some time before it kicks in and starts working, it is okay to give the shot if you are sure that he will come around and eat some shortly after you give the shot. I used to test Webber's BG about 15 minutes before shot time so that I had time to get his breakfast ready and see if he was interested in eating. I always gave him his shot while he was eating (eating distracted him). But there were some morning where he only was interested in a couple of tablespoons of food. But I knew that he would always go back to the bowl within the time that the Lantus started working.

Answer to your other question - yes you will want to pick up any food within 2 hours of the next shot. That way your preshot BG is not influenced by any food spike. ;-)

Answer to last question - no you don't change the dose based on how late the shot is given.

Have a wonderful day!!
PS - great job on adding yesterday's condo link :thumbup

you know what usually works? chicken dust (its magical!) sprinkled on top of their foods...freeze dried chicken treats (Halo, PureSnacks to name a couple) get yourself some - they work wonders on those picky I-dont-wanna-eat-now-mom-I'm chasing things!

Thanks Ronnie and Paige!

Purrcie is so funny too. He always sssssssssssnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaakkkkkssssssss up on his food! HA HA
It is the funniest thing I have ever seen. Like he is stalking it! When he gets close then he looks away from it, and even circles it acting completely uninterested, then finally lands on the plate.

When you are watching the clock, it is maddening!

Thank you for the hints and tips and I'll get me some of the magic fairy chicken dust for sure!

Also what treats are OK for FD kitties?

I have some Orijen grain free dry food that is teeny tiny kibbles and he gets one piece after BG tests.

It does have some fruits, vegetables and grass in it which I'm not sure how I should feel about that. I mean I haven't seen a cat pull up a carrot and eat it ever, or snack on blueberries so I wonder why this stuff is in some of the grain free wet foods such as Wellness. Any opinions?

Welcome to Lantus Land!

Nice post... I even see yesterday's news! Well done!!

As others have mentioned it's not an urgent thing to get food into the bellies of lantus kitties. If you have a cat that from time to time decides that he's not eating at all, that's a different story.

Regarding your question regarding the kibbles... other than grey hair, IMO, they're not good for much... however, some cats have a kibble or two as a testing treat and it doesn't seen to affect them. The biggest thing with kibbles is that their carb metabolism is unpredictable. I'm with Ronnie... chicken dust!

With respect to timing... 8 minutes! don't worry about 8 minutes. Over 15-20 minutes... you may be monkeying around with the shed a little... and it's not the late that will (you very loosely) in trouble, it's the next early shot that might... again... in relatively extreme terms.

I hope this helps and please.... come again!

Awwwwww, Mr Purrcie is so adorable. I love that second pic. Thank you for sharing!!

What an adorable crew!

I'd add Wellness Pure Delights -- they are a jerky type treat. Gabby's not a big fan of freeze dried stuff but she loves these.

The Halo treats you can get a Petco. I buy my Beefeaters Freeze Dried Salmon online because Petsmart stopped carrying them here locally. I'm not sure about the other treats. I bet if you posted in health alot of people would tell you where they get theirs.
