Re: 6/24 Ann & Maggie AMPS 100; +3 161

This is quite a spike for +3. Not sure what happened! Maybe I did a fur shot or did not get enough Lantus in syringe. It also could be a food spike, as she ate a tiny amount of Salmon Sophisticat, but I did a bg anyway as I thought she looked tired. She also had an extra helping of Gerber chicken bf.

You and all the rest of us too!!! Maggie's doing too well - this is obviously some sort of blip!

For sure! I have to leave for a short spell, so will check her when I get back. Thanks Krys.

A spell? What kind of spell? A spell to get Maggie' s numbers back in the greens?!?! ;-)

Oh this is better; she did come down some 20 bg's. For some reason all of a sudden she doesn't like the Salmon Feast Sophisticat. I just gave her some Chopped Grill Sophisticat after I took her bg, and she gobbled it up. Strange, huh, that all of a sudden she doesn't like a certain food when before it was okay!

Oh, I can explain that one: She's a cat.

Finicky critters....but they are sooo lovable. I hate that when they turn away with their noses up...
YUCK...not THAT!
Then they get that "I guess I will just have to staaaaarve" look in their faces....

Glad you are bringing those numbers back down Maggie!

Well now...what a surprise to get this bg of 94!! I've never seen her bounce up and down like this in a long time. I wonder if it was the Sophisticat Salmon. It had something white in it; hope it wasn't fragment of a bone. She left that part. Now I opened up one of my last two Chopped Grill and held the bowl to her face while she was in her bed on the sofa. If that isn't waiting on her! I hope she won't expect it every time. I will go kitty food shopping tomorrow.

That early spike may have been from the baby food. When Gabby's stomach was off, I was feeding her baby food. Baby food is broth, a protein, and corn starch! While it's easy on the stomach and they love the stuff, it's probably higher carb than what you usually feed Maggie.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever compared your AlphaTrack against another meter? Libby and I were discussing how to gauge whether Maggie has earned a dose shave due to what on another meter would be a week under 120 it's hard to know with AlphaTrack numbers.

Hi Sienne,
It could be from an extra helping of baby food. Yes, for a while I was using both meters and posting both readings, and it was almost a 30 bg difference between the two with the Relion being the lowest. Someone here told me I should stick with one meter so as not to be so confusing. Since I had so much data with the Alpha Trak, I decided to stick with it. I could post both bg's next check if you want to see the difference. Maggie's prick ear seems to bleed easily, so I was able to use one drop blood for both meters. She just asked for some chopped grill, so this wouldn't be a fast reading.

On another note, I found some vomit in her bed and part of the sofa, so she also could have had an upset tummy from the Sophisticat Salmon or the bf!

I think it would be worthwhile to try a dose shave to 0.1 units. She has been in low numbers overall for a week, other than whatever happened today. I wouldn't try OTJ just yet, let's give her some time with a drop of insulin.

Here is what Dr. Rand says about the feline meter:

Instead of aiming for 50-100mg/dL (2.8-5.6 mmol/L) , aim for 80-130 mg/dL (4.4-7.2 mmol/L [round numbers
4.5-7.0 mmol/L). Meters calibrated for feline use may read higher or lower than the actual value, in
contrast to consistently lower readings for meters validated for human blood.

My thinking is along the same lines as Libby's. Let's see if Maggie keeps in these good numbers on a drop. I'm all for making sure her pancreas is given every last second of assistance that it may need.

Some of the human meters run numbers close to that of the AlphaTrack -- that's why I asked. If the Relion was consistently lower, then you know where Maggie's numbers sit relative to both meters.

That's what I was thinking too, but since you've tested it against your other meter I'm more comfortable. Jazzy has an AlphaTrak, and when I tested it against my Freestyle there was only about 10 points difference in low numbers.
