Today is day 1 of insulin for my sweet girl. I tested her a few minutes ago and her BG was 340. She had a little breakfast and is about to get 0.5U of lantus. We'll see how it goes!

Re: 6/26 Emma AMPS 340

Welcome Kristen and Emma!

This is the best place - you've got a whole community here waiting and ready to help you get your little girl back on track!!!

Re: 6/26 Emma AMPS 340

Hi all and thanks for the welcome! So great to know there are others not too far away from us! Emma and I live in Everett, just a mile or so from Boston. I actually grew up in Brockton, so I know exactly where you are Miriam and Janice!

So far we're doing ok...easy to say after only one shot, right? The vet wants me to keep a close eye on her, because she's so borderline, so I'll be home watching her all weekend!

Hello Kristen and Emma

welcome to Lantus Land!

I'm linking your first thread from health just so others can look back if they need too
Emma's First Post in Health Forum

As you continue to post daily here (or when you can) you'll be adding your previous day's thread for the same reasons, if you miss it, no worries, someone will probably do it for you.

If you haven't had a chance to read the stickies up above, go thru them when you can. Lantus is an insulin that requires time and patience, you'll hear that a lot!

I see in your signature Emma is eating Wellness and Evo canned food with the occasional kibble for treat...there are wonderful substitutions for treats by the way, .....have a look thru this link, many of us use the freeze dried treats, very low carb and yummy for kitties.
Using dry kibble can spike up BG numbers, plus they take longer to clear out of the system.
Low Carb Kitty Treats

You'll want to keep this link handy as well, from up above,
New To The Group

Scroll down to the "example of a curve" chart...this is a good guideline of when to test...."curves" can be every two hours or a mini curve, every 3 hours in a cycle.

I would suggest you start with a +3 test this morning if you can....if your vet is asking you to test mid day cycle +6, known as the "nadir"...thats a good test to do as well, however, most vets don't encourage a lot of testing, but we do it anyway - the more data you collect, the better, so you'll want to check Emma early on in the cycle.

With lantus, you'll also want to avoid giving food two hours before preshot test in both cycles....so no foods after +10....many of us use a automated food dispenser that you can set for example at around the +9 hour to offer a snack in both cycles...or if you're home anyways, just make sure Emma has a snack around that time....

treats are ok...if you stick with the kibble, you may see a higher preshot number, that's why I encourage you to consider replacing her treats with low carb ones.

If you have any questions and concerns - do ask - this is a busy forum and there's always someone around that can help.

Re: 6/26 Emma AMPS 340 +3 206

Thanks Ronnie. I'll read up on everything you mentioned!

I did a test @ +3 and it's 206. Should I do another one before +6?

Re: 6/26 Emma AMPS 340 +3 206

Welcome to Lantus Land!

Others have already directed you to the permanent (starred) notes at the top of the Board. There's a huge amount of information in those notes -- it's rather overwhelming at first so please don't hesitate to ask questions. We're here to help.

When you have a chance, could you complete a Profile for Emma and link it to your signature? The instructions are in the Tech Support area. The Profile will give us background on Emma so we don't keep asking you the same questions over and over again.

Re: 6/26 Emma AMPS 340 +3 206

opps, cant view your spreadsheet - check it out to make sure it's under "shared"

Try for a +4 or +5 if you like...you may not see anything right away, Lantus requires a little bit of patience....but since you're around, what the heck!

Re: 6/26 Emma AMPS 340 +3 206

Thanks. I checked the spreadsheet and it says it's shared. I logged out of my google account and was still able to see it, so I'm not sure why you can't see it, but I'm certainly no expert!

I'll work on the profile now...thanks!

Ok - I saw a "ccc" in your link. Please read the text I'm quoting below for instructions on how to get the correct link with "pub" in it:

Cyn and Cosmo said:
If your SS link has "ccc" in the middle, something has gone awry!! I mean, all things considered, better to have the ccc link than no link, but please!
if you have the ccc link instead of 'pub' in there, please do the following

1) go to your spreadsheet as if to edit it.
2) click on the "share" button on the right hand side
3) choose "publish as a web page"
4) copy and paste the URL provided into your signature here?

you'll know you have the "share as a webpage" version when it has "pub" instead of 'ccc"

the difference is that when it is "ccc" and I click, I add another document to my google docs. If I click on a link with "pub" it's like I'm just going to another webpage. Small difference, but for those of us that use google docs on a regular basis, it makes a big difference!

welcome to Lantus Land!!!

Emma is looking good so far, she actually dropped pretty quickly after her insulin.

Question, your signature says you had her diet controlled for a long time (wow!). Do you or your vet have a theory for why she is needing insulin now? How is her health? Her teeth? Anything else going on?

Her health has been pretty stable over the last couple of years, with the exception of having to bump up her sub-Q's from 100 mL once a week to a little more often. My vet didn't offer a theory, but I think it's been creeping up slowly for a while. All of her bloodwork looked great as of Monday with the exception of the BG - even better than it did last December. Her teeth look ok too.

The only real issue she's had is pretty frequent uti's. It didn't matter how meticulous I was about her litter box - I even had baby wipes to help clean her up when I would catch her in the box - she was getting them every 3-4 months. I started giving her grapefruit seed extract over the winter, and that has helped tremendously. As far as I know, it doesn't have an impact on blood glucose, so I don't think that has contributed, but I'm not an expert!

Hi Kirsten & Emma and welcome! Your spreadsheet looks fine. This is a wonderful place to be for a diabetic kitty. Ask as many questions as you need and you will get help and support.

The cycle looks great!

Has Emma had a dental any time in the last year or so? If not, if you can look at her teeth to see if there's tartar or if her gums are red, that would help. If she won't let you, the next time you're at the vet, ask them to take a look. For many cats who have gone into remission, any inflammation or infection can raise BG levels.
