Re: 10/1 Jack +11 = 69

I would definitely stall till you see if this is number is rising or falling--Feeding a little as you did will bring those numbers up.
Will you be there to monitor today?? Let's keep checking his numbers-OK?

Re: 10/1 Jack +11 = 69

I would hold off on the food. The only time you generally want to feed after +10 is if the numbers are in the 40s or below.

Re: 10/1 Jack +11 = 69

Jack has not been fed yet (last ate at PMPS 09/30)
I'll be home until +1.5 - and I think Jose will be around longer.
Going to spot and shoot now...

Re: 10/1 Jack AMPS 71

So yeah, Jose will be around - preparing his normal breffies now and 0.25u
Is it just a psychological thing that I'm not as worried about hypo on very small doses of insulin?
If he was at these numbers and getting more than 1.0u I'd be more worried...

Re: 10/1 Jack AMPS 71

I was once told by Jojo(vet tech), one of the founders of this forum, that it is unlikely that a cat will hypo on such a low dose-But that's why we monitor!!-But hey anything is possible,That's why we have safeguards!

As you will be around today, just keep monitoring when you can...Looks like his nadir is between +5 and +6, so if you can stick around till then??

Otherwise, leave lots of food out, or Do you use a auto feeder?? It is a great tool... many here use it-- we work weekends & set the feeder for +3 and +5, which is very helpful & makes us feel more secure that she eats at those times that she would drop.
I'm sure Sienne or others will be around with additional input--Great job you are doing!

Re: 10/1 Jack AMPS 71

Roni is partially correct. The reference to Jojo's comment was based on a dose of 0.1u. I would still monitor. This is the lowest you've shot. Please get a +1 and a +2.

Re: 10/1 Jack AMPS 71 +1=51 +1.5=36

Did one last check before I headed out the door to have the Meter give me exactly the number that I didn't want it to.
He's slurping up some 9 Lives Chicken and Gravy right now.

Passing off the torch to Jose now...

Re: 10/1 Jack AMPS 71 +1=51 +1.5=36 +2 38

Jose here:
+2 is 38, gave Jack-o some more 9 lives which he's eating enthusiastically. He's clearly knackered out--stretched out on the sofa very lethargic. Keeping a close eye on him, will check again in 15

UPDATE: he finished the food and is now at least moving around a bit.

UPDATE 2: starting to go up, will check again at +3

Re: 10/1 Jack AMPS 71 +1=51 +1.5=36 +2 38 +2.3 39 +2.6 47

Sometimes they wobble so we need to keep checking him...to make sure he is rising, okay? Check in 15 again and then half our after that, depending on the number ok?

Re: 10/1 Jack AMPS 71 +1=51 +1.5=36 +2 38 +2.3 39 +2.6 47 +3 57

just did a +3, he's at 57 now. Will check again in 1/2 hour, and maybe give a lc snack then, just to keep him nudging in the right direction.

Do we adjust his dose even further down at this point? It astounds me that a few weeks ago he was getting 5u bid, and now we can barely get two doses in a row without him dropping below 50...I can only imagine the situation we'd be in if we weren't checking him.

ZOMG, for serious. someone needs to make microliter syringes for the diabetic kitties. I am not going to be able to believe that I am actually giving a dose at less than 0.5u.

Your food change and your good monitoring have brought Jack to this wonderful success!!
Keep up the great work  !

Re: 10/1 Jack AMPS 71 +2.6 47 +3 57 +3.5 71

Jack's doing so well! you have to be thrilled with his progress, we all are :-D

Re: 10/1 Jack AMPS 71 +2.6 47 +3 57 +3.5 71

ok, he's climbing but not doing a crazy intense bounce (fingers crossed) gonna leave him with a frozen nugget of raw (LC) to defrost and run some quick errands before the crazy storm comes in. Will check in when I get back.

looks like Jack has earned a new dose. 0.1 units it is!

You might also want to look at changing his feeding schedule around a little bit. He might do well if you divide his PS feeding in half and feed half at PS and half at +1. That might help soften those early drops. It might be even better than that to feed mini meals at PS, +1, and +2. It seems like you would want him to earn that last dose reduction from here and go OTJ, but his bouncing means his pancreas isn't on the job 100% yet, so he still needs more healing time on insulin. The goal for now is to *prevent* him from earning reductions, at least for a little while. Does that make sense?

Yeah! We agree! Jack earning his last dose reduction by having a normal blood glucose would be fantastic- however, Jack's "earned" his reductions thus far by diving to the green basement. And um, as he's about to get 0.1u of insulin tonight - what action do we take when he's below 50 mg/dL again?

* Can we space the doses out more (every 14 or 16 hours?)
* Do we just continue with 0.1u?

I'm guessing his next dose reduction would mean: Keep the 0.1u, but space the LC food out. Actually - that's what we're going to try anyway for his meals now: He usually get 2 one-ounce defrosted cubes of raw food at AMPS and PMPS. So now, we'll give him one defrosted cube and one frozen cube (Jack doesn't like eating cold food).

As Jack's is currently in the purple - Jose and I are taking a much needed break and will be heading out to a movie at +0.5 scratch that - we're heading out now- I'm a little nervous that Jack went down from +11 to PMPS - but I have faith in him to be a good non-hypo kitty until we get back at around +3...
