Here is a link to my prior post regarding Milo’s BG numbers being all over the place. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=26546

I took Milo in to see the vet today, and all the tests came back negative. They found no UTI or anything else wrong with Milo. So given his numbers and my inability to find a dose to regulate him, they have advised me to give Milo .5 units of insulin once a day.

I was wondering how this board would react to that recommendation. I’m not sure if I feel that is the proper way to go. In viewing my chart, you will see I have been fluctuating between .5 units and .25 units since at times .5 is too much, but the .25 doesn’t seem to be holding him. Any thoughts or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

From what I understand about Lantus, it's a consistency insulin, meaning that you need to give it every 12 hours for it to do it's job. Personally, I wouldn't give insulin only once a day as I don't think it'll help.

I'm sure, however, that someone who has more knowledge than I will see your post and give you better advice.

I wish you tons of luck. :)

Hi Kelly...good news about the vet visit going so well...wondering if the vet checked his teeth this time?
My Shadow needs a dental twice a year due to plaque buildup.
I am wondering if you did any tests last night and if you could update your SS for today....

Perhaps you could do a Fat .25u? Have you tried that...? It's just adding a little bit more to the dose and maybe you will see better numbers all across the board if the .5u is too much.
Lantus likes consistency so no, I don't believe that your vet's advice is sound...so maybe others will be by but that is my suggestion. What about food Kelly? Are you giving him only the 2 meals each day?
Sometimes, if you test after 4 hours you will see a drop in numbers...and smaller meals might be better for a sputtering pancreas....
Meanwhile, if you can, post each day so we can watch Milo's progress, okay?
Raja is back on the juice after a 9 month Honeymoon...sigh...this happens and just a little consistent dosing will help to get them back on track...as long as there are no other issues going on. Good job bringing him in! So great that he got a good report!

I don't think once a day dosing will be of any help. Lantus is a 12/12 hr. insulin.
I also suggest a fat .25. a little drop more may be all you need

I have updated Milo's chart and I will start posting everyday. I am thinking about keeping him on .5 until he comes down out of the 200's. Then I think I will try giving him a fat .25 to see if that works. I feed half a can of Friskies special diet lc food in the morning and the other half in the evening. Milo is really testing me this time around and keeping me on my toes. I just didn't see how giving him one shot a day was going to help...seems like it would be a roller coaster ride instead. The vet suggested the one shot as a way to keep him from getting to low..she said she thought it would be better if he is in the 200's than below 100....??? and this was from a vet who has been treating her diabetic cat for 8 years.... I think I should give her this web address!!!
