12/15 Casanova PMPS 243 +3 289

Good morning! Casanova had a pretty good day yesterday. Not so many blues, but I'll take the low yellows. This morning a pretty decent number.
I know it's a different amount for all cats, but do you all pretty much agree with what I read on the board about feeding about 15 calories per pound? My cat weighs 21 pounds and according to vet should weight about 14. I think 16 would be more realistic...he's a big cat-I swear, he's not really THAT fat :lol: Anyway, so in order for him to get down to 16 pounds I would feed about 240 calories a day. He isn't begging for food anymore which is amazing because it was BAD before. He must be way more satisfied now that he's completely on low carb wet.

Nice sunny start to Casanova's day.

I too had Curry on a weight loss program. Just a couple of pounds for her, but it seemed to make a big difference. I think I had her on a bit less than 15 since she's not very active. I looked at Dr. Lisa's information on weight loss. I would also weight Curry every 4 days.....make sure she wasn't losing too much weight too quickly....I think Dr. Lisa said no more than 3oz per week. You can always start at that amount you calculated and then weight Casanova to see the effect...gain or loss...then reassess the amount. Good luck with the weight reduction program.

Hi Laura! Nice numbers today for Casanova - even some blue! Tena's info is good. Good luck with the weight loss program.

Be very careful about losing weight without doing it slowly and closely monitored. You do not want Casanova to get feline hepatic lipidosis. A cat doesn't process body fat to lose weight like humans do and their livers can clog with fat (fatty liver). Some cats can get this very easily - by not getting enough calories. It starts a horrible cycle of inappetance and liver failure.

There is an article someone referenced here about how to diet a cat safely but I don't remember where to find it. I would get a baby scale and not go by concrete numbers for calories. Every cat is different just like every human is different. I would get a babyscale/pet scale/shipping scale (cheap on ebay) and monitor Casanova closely. If he is losing too quickly - up the calories. Please make sure he loses weight slowly - its not a race.

My cat Maverick recovered from FHL in 2008 and he had a feeding tube for ten weeks. It all started by switching him to a lower calorie food recommended by his vet so he would "lose weight". Well he did - he got down to 13.4 pounds and almost died. Its a longer story than this obviously. But once you have a cat recover from FHL you want to warn people so they don't have to go through it. Its preventable. Overweight cats are more susceptible to getting FHL.
