Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three hours!

Hi all,

Soph had her lowest BG AMPS today, 164. When she started rising to 173, I gave her a half unit and food (half her normal dose). At +3, she was 83. Ten minutes later, 80. Just gave her some carb kibble, and hoping she'll be on the rise soon. I have to leave for the airport in three hours for a obligation I just can't miss. I have friends coming on the 12/12 schedule, and they know the drill, but I'm worried. Any advice for me over the next few hours?

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

kibble will take longer to leave system....give gravy food if you are really concerned....then check every half hr....can u do that?

eta: so she will be higher later on with the kibble...for now you want to go up so give fancy feast with gravy in it...or any other type of cat food with gravy in it

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

She dropped to 55. . . smeared karo all over her mouth and her tongue, kept smearing it where she's compelled to lick. Will update.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Still at 55 11 minutes later, after a little more Karo. Doesn't want to eat.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

you can add karo in the food if you want...karo alone will leave system faster...my understanding....i'm not an expert....so giving food along w karo will be better

offer gravy food....do you have it?

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Have no food with gravy, but Soph did have a little more than a whole can already today, so she has food in her system, even though she's not eating now. It's just that the insulin keeps acting.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Scarfing up Whiskas Tempations treats now. stuck a few in bowl mixed with wet food and dry kibble, with karo mixed in. Ate a little. will test again.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

in order to put on the breaks from dropping further food needs to be given each time you test...hence why i'm telling you to give food...karo alone won't put on the breaks....

you filled her up all at once...you need to give food....not sure how you will do that if her tummy is full....

can you try offering her reg food?

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Josh,

Any way you could take a later flight? This will turn out fine, but it will take a while to resolve and you want to leave Sophia knowing she will be okay. If you can get your impending flight resolved, then you can breathe deeply and take care of her.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Can't take later flight. . .already bumped it to 6:40. Extremely important meeting I can't miss - it's once in a lifetime. May call friend to come over and sit.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

in order to ensure she doesn't drop on you...you need at least 2 rising numbers....so don't feed anymore and test again in 15-20 mins...ok?

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Better, but it can be the Karo bringing the number up temporarily. unfortunately low numbers on Lantus can take a while to clear.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

People here can certainly work with your friend. Can you teach him/her to test and use this site?

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

can you do one last test in half hour?
teach your friend how to use this site and testing....
report in half hr...ok?

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

I sure will! I'll tell her about you guys, and ask her to post here if she needs help. You know you all are angels, right?

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

teach her that for today she can use this same condo...and tomorrow she needs to open up a new condo and link the one from previous day....and give a small report on how she (Sophie) is doing....and to update the SS too...

and for you to have peace of mind do one last test before you head out...ok?

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Leda may not be able to stay more than a few hours, then she comes back at 10 p.m. for normal dosing and feeding. Should I tell her no insulin at. .what BG level?

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Do you want to leave a pm for someone with a phone number for Leda, just in case we might have someone nearby who could be a resource for her? We don't post them on the board - too many people have access to it.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

could your friend take Sophie home with her for today? Also is it possible to make a quick run to the store (you or your friend when she gets there)to get some FF grilled or Gravy lovers? Those are the highest carbs.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

You can send me one and I will forward it to a few of the more experienced people on Lantus like Sienne and Gabby. Just look in the lower left hand corner and choose PM on this post.

PS Great ideas, Ann.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Half hour later, she's up to 193! Leda just tested her, and will be here for a few hours. Then, Leda will be back at 10:30 for feeding and possible insulin dose. Should Leda give her the .5 shot?

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Wonderful news! So glad Leda can test her. I see Sienne is on the board; hope she will reply to your insulin dose question.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Just saw the 911. Claudia and Sue are giving you great info. I just sent you a PM with my phone # if Leda needs some coaching. I'm at work and won't be able to follow closely. Ditto for tomorrow. I will make sure there are eyes on your condo so please make sure Leda knows how to use the board. She can register on her own if you don't want to give her your password. She can open a condo for "Josh's Sophie" tomorrow.

If you're more comfortable with it, Leda can shoot 0.25u. It might be hard to measure so be sure to set up a demonstration syringe. There's a very good chance that this will result in a bounce. What Leda gives as a dose is entirely dependent on your comfort level. Personally, I'd go with the 0.25u since it's hard enough when it's your cat to deal with low numbers.

Please try to pick up some HC food at your earliest convenience!

FWIW, Gabby has done this to me right before I was leaving for the airport. They know how to torture us!

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

BTW, I have high-carb food in the form of kibble. Should Leda feed her the normal canned tonight? I'm gonna post another test number in 5 mins.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

Usual canned food is fine. Numbers can be manipulated by adding syrup to LC food. Kibble takes forever to work to bring #s up and it takes even longer to get it out of a cat's system. (We hates kibble!! Kitties loves kibble. Beans hates the stuff!)

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

She's up to 315 now. . hmmm. Next shot is supposed to be at 10:30 p.m.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

She's bouncing. You're good to go. Some of the bounce is due to the HC. The other is just the response to low numbers. You're blood pressure and heart rate can come down now.

Please print this link on managing low numbers for Leda.

You can also remove the 911.

Re: Sophie 80 and dropping, must leave for plane in three ho

375, and I'm off to the airport. Thanks so, so much, and for helping Leda, too:))))
