Hello all

A few days ago Mar 5, Shishi suddenly puked and stopped eating abruptly. The night before her appetite was still as voracious as ever.

I took her to see the vet that day and sub Q fluids were given, 120ml lactated ringer, and shishi was sent home. Although doctors suggested hospitalizing her but said could not monitor well on the weekend. So I went home with Shishi. She tested negative for ketones, and I went home with more sub Q fluids if she needed. She ate tiny amounts of food only.

I knew Shishi was not feeling well, and on the morning of Mar 7, took her in the vet again for hospitalization. She lost 15% body weight and was severly dehydrated. Ran a battery of tests and only conclusion was pancreatitis. Although vet said he knew she has it from the ultrasound done 2 weeks ago. She was put on IV and fluids and antibiotics were given. Pain meds were given, and appetite stimulant was given aswell. She stayed overnight at the hospital.

I got her back this morning, and the vet said she was fit to go home. Vet said I don't need to do sub Q fluids, but everything I read says otherwise. I was sent home with some pain medication and appetite stimulant.

Shishi is starting to eat which is good, but still hiding and lying down lethargically. It has been mentally and emotionally exhausting, and not sure where shishi is heading now.

I think the use of sub-q fluids with pancreatitis varies. As long as Shishi is eating, you can add more water to her food. That will help with hydration.

Here's a post written by one of our vet techs on pancreatitis. The one thing that the vet didn't seem to mention was Pepsid (famotidine). Many cats benefit from being given 1/4 of a 10 mg Pepsid AC tablet twice a day. What pain meds did your vet give you?

Re: 3/8 Shishi PMPS 244 back from hospitalization, pancreati

Thanks for the support all.

The vet gave me Buprenorphine .5mg/ml use .05ml 4x daily.

She is starting to eat more and more, around 40g now per sitting instead of 10g. She usually gets 79g on the main meals. The pepsid is a great tip. I will ask my vet for further instructions, she has not been puking since coming back from the vet 2 days ago.

Shishi is still somewhat dehydrated, the skin twist test still shows some dehydration and her weight did not all come back yet. I will add more water to her food and go from there.

-Purring, she purrs briefly when back home from vet. Stopped purring again.
-peeing, still peeing lots, tennis ball size clumps.
-she grooms herself after meals very briefly, coat still full of dandruff.
-pooping, she has not pooped yet since coming home, probably due to dehydration.
-she does not play
-eating is coming back slowly.

Morning Will - I am sorry to read that Shishi has been ill. I cannot give any input on her condition, as we have not had to deal with this. I hope that she is on the road to recovery. We send many positive thoughts and healing vines. Be well Shishi.

Re: 3/8 Shishi PMPS 244 back from hospitalization, pancreati

was blood work ever done on Shishi to rule out CRF (chronic renal failure)?

if Shishi is dehydrated you need to give subq fluids until you figure out what is wrong....dehydration causes lethargy as well...it feels as though you have a hang over...if that makes sense...

Re: 3/8 Shishi PMPS 244 back from hospitalization, pancreati

I agree with Claudia; if you can tell from the skin pinch that she is dehydrated, I think a little subqs for a few days will help her. In the CRF group, the philosophy is it is best if the kitty can get fluids from drinking but if the gums are tacky and not moist and the skin pinch test fails, it might help very short term to give her a small amount of fluids....few days. I don't know her weight so don't know what would be appropriate but my Teddi is 6 lbs and we, at one time, gave her 75mls/sid; so maybe 50mls??? If you let your vet know you think it might help, he could tell you how much.

Re: 3/8 Shishi PMPS 244 back from hospitalization, pancreati

You can get pepcid AC from the regular pharamacy. 10mg tabs. you would likely give 1/4 tab every 12 hrs.

The other option is to get a vial of injectable famotodine (pepcid) from the vet. Then you give 0.25ml via SQ injection like you do the insulin.

The things I had on hand for pancreatitis attacks:

1) baby food (meat flavors w/o onion or garlic. beechnut, I think).
2) pepcid AC or injectable famotodine.
3) bup
4) anzamet (anti-nauseant)
5) mirtazapine/remeron
6) SQ fluids

hope that helps.

Re: 3/8 Shishi PMPS 244 back from hospitalization, pancreati

Thanks for the healing thoughts guys, shes eating gradually more and more.

I spoke with the vet regarding Pepcid, and he stated that as long as she was not puking, I should not administer it. Should I administer it, I have to keep it away from the antibiotics, because it inhibits absorption of the antibiotics (zeniquin).

Her urine was not concentrated from stopping the antibiotic for 2 days, she has now been put back on zeniquin.

I will speak with the vet regarding the sub Q fluids, although he does not want me to do them if shes eating.

Bloodwork was done 2 weeks ago, and vet did mention that her kidneys were not ideal, but not something I should be concerned about. I should really get the numbers and post them here for all of us to interpret. The was no strong evidence of chronic renal failure. Only signs that her kidneys were not concentrating urine well and thats from the urine test.

Shishi weighs in at around 13lbs, during her hospitalization she weighed in at 11lbs in a period of 2 days.

I will speak with the vet and see what we can do from there.
