Morning everyone

Simon's bloodwork came back, and he's hyperthyroid  On the plus side, kidney indicators are with range,
a few liver indicators above normal range, but not drastically. I'll get a copy this afternoon when I pick up
his Tapazole. I'm hoping some of you folks have experience in treating both, as I see one of the common side
effects of the Tapazole is loss of appetite, not exactly what we want when giving insulin!

Yesterday

Blue all day yesterday until this a.m. (281) I think the PM shot might have been "thin", or maybe it was a partial furshot.

Re: 6/10 Simon AMPS 281 +2 221

Good morning Bruce! I love the picture!

That's still not too bad, and he may give you a more dramatic cycle today from the looks of that +2. I'm a big fan of the +2, it often will tell you which way the cycle will head...if it's much lower than the PS, you likely are in for a busy cycle. Looking good! :-D

I don't have experience with HyperT, but there are several kitties here with both. I do know it can make it harder to regulate Simon until the hyperT is managed. I also know it's better to start with a low dose on the meds and gradually increase it, but not the specifics of how much. Hopefully others will chime in...

Re: 6/10 Simon AMPS 281 +2 221 DX Hyperthyroid

Thanks Laurie
I'm quite happy the kidneys seem OK, that was a worry. We did have another diabetic kitty with HT (Bono (GA))
and he was with us for 17 years  The vet who called with the results said Simon's regular vet will be in later
this a.m. and he will be the one calculating the dosage, so I'll confirm we're using the "start low" approach with the HT med.

Re: 6/10 Simon AMPS 281 +2 221 DX Hyperthyroid

I also think the Tapazole comes in a range of preparations. You might want to ask your vet about the options, especially if Simon isn't a big fan of pills. There is a transdermal form. If you want to go with pills, the allergy formula variety of Pill Pockets (it's duck and pea) is diabetes friendly -- no corn syrup!

This site has a good deal of info on hyper-T and it's treatment.

Also, if your vet only got a T-4 level, which is common on a blood panel, might want to ask for a free T-4 to confirm the diagnosis.

morning bruce! it's always good to know what you're dealing with it - and you sound like you already have lots of experience.

great start to simon's morning!

Re: 6/10 Simon AMPS 281 +2 221 DX Hyperthyroid

You do want to start the methimazole at a low dose, then recheck bloodwork (I would recheck CBC, renal values, and T4) in two weeks. There is a possibility that you may see the renal values, which are currently w.n.l., pop into the abnormal range. Hyperthyroidism can mask kidney disease, and treatment for the hyperthyroidism can reveal the actual state of the kidneys. Simon's renal values may also stay perfectly OK. It's just something to be aware of, and monitor.

The oral medication may upset the stomach. Transdermal methimazole may be better tolerated in terms of GI side effects. It may also take longer to take effect, so be aware of that if raising the dose after two weeks of treatment. Transdermal methimazole is usually well tolerated by the skin (it is administered inside the ear tip). It builds up a residue which needs to be cleaned off. It may be a bit sticky when it comes to BG testing. Bear Man (GA) used transdermal methimazole. While it is recommended to alternate ears for a transdermal med, I used to apply the cream to one ear, and test the other one.

nice numbers for Simon.....lovely picture of him....he is handsome ;-)

i agree with Linda....do not let it slide with the kidney values....rechecking them again is important....

Thanks! I'll definitely be following up closely, have to get a handle on what's actually happening with him.

Rocket's a beauty , I'm sorry he seems to have had more than his share of health problems.

What a sweet picture of Simon! Nice numbers today! Sorry about the diagnosis, but it is just one more stepping stone. You can handle it.

Hope you have a great day!

Re: 6/10 Simon AMPS 281 +2 221 DX HyperT +5 73 +7 86 PMPS 27

what a great surf Simon had today!

Sorry about the new diagnosis. I wish I had experienced loss of appetite when I started methimazole. I think my appetite actually increased, which combined with the fact that the whole point of the drug is to slow the metabolism down was not very good for the waistline.

Hi Bruce: sorry to hear about the dx. We are just dealing with this with our oldest kitty, Teddi Bear, who is a civvie. The methimazole REALLY has done a number on hr tummy and we really started low but she's getting better. I tried the gel but she is a Scottish Fold with folded ears and it's murder trying to get it into those little tiny ears.

Sienne and Linda gave you some great information and I hope it helps. Looks like he's doing just fine with his numbers!!!

Good luck getting it all sorted out.
