Georgia and Simon (GA)

Very Active Member
I am getting a little frustrated and nervous about what to do with Simon's ear allergies. I have tried the zymox without the steroid and tried an anti-histimine with no luck. I have cut out all fish from Simon's diet and he continues to scratch his ears and around his ears. There is even some blood where he has scratched pretty hard. My question is this: My civvie, Cleo, was also scratching her ears and the vet diagnosed her last week with a small staph infection. She is now on the Zymox with the steroid. Should I give Simon the Zymox with the steroid even though his bg went sky high with Tresaderm (which has a steroid)? I just don't know what else to do. I know I should probably do some type of allergy testing, but I just can't afford it right now. I am still paying off Simon's dental and Cleo's vet visit was another fortune last week. All advice is welcome -- I am just so concerned about my poor Simon's ears and how uncomfortable he seems.

Other than the ear problems, Simon is doing pretty well. He is still posting high bg numbers in the AM but yesterday, he was mostly green the rest of the day. He is eating well. I changed him over from Fancy Feast to mostly Wellness chicken and also the turkey. LB action is normal.

Thanks, everyone!

He is eating Wellness? Good job! I wish I could help you with the ear/allergy question. Could Simon be dealing with the same thing as Cleo? Give them both a hug from me.

Re: 7/10 Georgia's Simon AMPS 127 Quest. about ear allergies

Karrie, I asked the vet about Cleo being contagious and passing her ear problem to Simon, but he said that Cleo's problem is not contagious. I have also noticed that Cleo's ear problem looks different than Simon's.

Simon has had ear allergies alot in the past and I always treated them with a steroid which did give him relief. Of course, that was before I found out he has FD. I just don't want his bg to go really high again, although I am thinking it would come back down after the treatment? Is it worth it to try the zymox and monitor Simon's bg and increase insulin as needed? So many questions!!

Sorry I don't know anything about this. Hope someone has some insight for you.

Hi Georgia - I have no answers on the steroids or the eras - just no experience in that area. Have you tried posting this on health? Maybe someone there could help.

Looks like Simon is starting out well today - nice low blue number. YAY! I hope Simon likes the Wellness. Mannie eats that for the most part now too - he seems to do well on it, likes the flavors too.

Have a great day guys!

Re: 7/10 Georgia's Simon AMPS 127 Quest. about ear allergies

Hi Georgia, I am sorry about Simon's ears. That must be so frustrating for both of you! It has to be bothering Simon a lot with so much scratching and blood, too. I also was going to suggest Health forum, but also more Beans will be on soon and may have some answers. Maybe also put a an icon question mark on your condo so it will stand out and others will see you have a question. It's a nice AMPS today for Simon. Hoping you get some answers soon. I hear you with the money and Vet expenses.

Really sorry about the Sime's ears , hope you guys have a good day otherwise.

Re: 7/10 Georgia's Simon AMPS 127 Quest. about ear allergies

I couldn't fit this on Simon's subject line, but I fed Simon some Blue Buffalo duck this morning and he threw it up and now at +6 he is 188! I thought the Blue Bufallo was on Janet and Binky's food list, but now I don't see it. I think maybe I gave Simon some high carb food and between the pukus and high carbs, he has posted a higher +6. Back to the wellnesss for him.

Thanks Karrie, Ann, Michelle and Bruce & Junior's bean for posting on Simon's condo. Ann, I put a question mark on his Subject line so hopefully some more people will weigh in with an idea about the steroid ear drop.

Duck is very high in fat. Maybe his tummy can't handle it. Wellness is high in fat too - my dog can't stomach it.

Re: 7/10 Georgia's Simon AMPS 127 Quest. about ear allergies

Hi Georgia, thanks for visiting my condo and seeing Maggie's pics, thanks to Karrie's help. I was checking to see if anyone had advice for Simon. How is he feeling? I've been feeding Fancy Feast Chicken Feast to Maggie. For a while she liked the Wellness Chicken. I've never tried the Blue Buffalo.

Re: 7/10 Georgia's Simon PMPS 168! ear allergies

Simon has posted some pretty high numbers today and I was wondering if his ear problems could be causing his bg to be all over the place? Ann, thanks for checking back in with us and unfortunately, I haven't had any answers to my question about putting Simon back on a medication that has a steroid in it. At this point, I think I might try Simon on the Zymox for a few days and see how he does. Maybe he just didn't do well with the Tresaderm. I just don't want him scratching anymore and being uncomfortable.
