Garland had DKA and is now still recovering from FHL, etube feedings

Yesterday

She looks great today. Curled up in the laundry basket. I can tell she did some grooming last night, her fur looks much better. Shes also getting annoyed that she doesnt have free roam of the house. But Im not ready to let her go free yet. Im also having a hard time with her neck wrapping, she keeps scratching at it.. Ive had to rewrap it several times since coming home from the vet yesterday

We moved her insulin to 2.75, but those .25's are really really hard to see (even on a half mark) So there is a good chance its still about what shes been getting when I was trying to give her 2.5. Those two look almost the same

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288

Best report ever dancing_cat :RAHCAT dancing_cat ! I'm sure it's frustrating that she's messing with her neck wrap, but it's probably also a good sign that she's feeling better. I love that she's curled up in the laundry basket!

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288

If you're not already doing this, rather than pushing the insulin out when you're measuring, twist/turn the plunger. By "dialing" in the dose, it usually gives you finer control over the amount of insulin. It is hard to see. I usually use one of the lines on the syringe in relation to the plunger as a guide (e.g., the bottom of the plunger is at the very top of a line or there's a thin space between the top of the plunger and the line).

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288

PReventing her from scratching the bandage is important. Take a loose sports sock and cut the stretchy part off of it and put it over the bandage. This way she'll scratch the sock and you can replace as needed - less likely to get her nails into the tube part.

Did she keep the feeding down after the metoclopromide last night? Obviously she needs this not for nausea but for motility so keep this up for at least a couple weeks until she is much more further along in her recovery from FHL and DKA.

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288

Hi guys .. it sounds like garland is feeling better each day, that is what we love hearing! I am sure she is more then ready (in her own mind) to conquer the house again but I think you are right by holding that off for awhile .. have a great day!

Yep, shes kept down all the food since the meds. What is motility?

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288

Just tested out my new blood ketone meter. Came up as 0.6 Not sure if thats good or bad... dont we want a 0.0?

A few minutes ago I thought I had lost her. LOL I couldnt find her anywhere. She had climbed up and behind some gym bags and a chest I have in the corner of my closet. Its blocked off now, but she is really getting antsy in there,I can tell

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288

I am thrilled that you are seeing improvement in her energy and grooming.

Motility is moving the food through her stomach. Sometimes in cats with FHL this is a problem and food sits in the stomach. Maverick had this. The metoclopromide you are giving improves stomach motility so food doesn't sit in the stomach. This is why she threw up food hours after you fed it to her. Food moves from the stomach very quickly in a cat without motility issues.

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288

Good morning!

Nice number this morning! I can't see Garlands ss from my office - you skipped the R this morning, correct?

I'm not sure. What do the instructions say?
So happy to hear Garland is showing some spunk today!
Hoping her tummy issues get resolved with the meds Kerrie mentioned

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288

i saw that amps 288 and thought WAHOO! and hoped it was even without R - and then saw your report that garland is getting antsy and grooming herself - thought Double WAHOO!

SO SO SO SO glad she's feeling better - and you found this site and the folks who knew how to guide you through the crisis.

This is just about the best morning report ever. way to go, violet!

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288

i looked at my ketostix packaging and it says 5mg is a trace, 15 mg is small. i don't know how .6 fits in there - i wonder if it's 0.6mg? or if it's on the same scale. did you check your packaging?

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288

Violet has a meter that checks the blood for ketones (pretty cool, since ketones appear in the blood before they appear in the urine). So the scale/numbers are probably different. I'm sure the info must be in the documentation that came with the meter. . .

It says if its under 0.1 it will come up as low on the screen, and if its over 8.0 it will come up as high on the screen. Then it says the normal range for a non diabetic human is below .60. It doesnt really give more info on the numbers outside of that

Okay, found another area.. it says if your ketone level is above a 8.0 you are at risk for DKA

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288 Ketone 0.6

If it is the Abbott Precision, I called the company awhile back to ask what it would be for a cat. It took days to get a response but the #'s I was given was the "normal" range was 0.1 --1.6 .... and this is considered no ketones.

My Payne gives off ketones at the drop of a hat and I do both, meter and strips and I have found this to be a very accurate gauge. She also can go DKA quickly, so I don't mess with ketones but I don't want to panic either:) I would do a urine check to see if it is showing anything ....

Thanks for the confirmation. Yea, I think thats what I was thinking as well, after doing some googling. normal ketone range is 0.1-1.6. So shes good today :) We had to get the blood one bc the urine ones arent working for her. The FHL is causing the ketone strips to show wrong results.

So, Ive got baby food and clinicare. I know both have been mentioned, but which is better to give her more calories in between feedings?

So happy to see that Garland is doing so well. Continued prayers for a full recovery!

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288 (Ketone 0.6) +5 311

This is a link to information that Sharyn/Fiona collected on blood ketones. Compared to a Ketostix, 3.0 on the meter is equivalent to "trace" on the ketostix.

What babyfood do you have - brand and kind.

Its the gerber meats... chicken and turkey.. its says gravy though... (Pat had brought me a bunch when she came over that time)

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288 (Ketone 0.6) +5 311

I am looking into this calculation. I don't know how many mls is in a jar. It says 2.5oz/71 grams but this I believe is a weight not mls.
If it was mls 2.5oz would be 73mls and 100 calories. So calories per ml would be 1.36 and only 2% carbs vs the 1 calorie per ml in the clinicare with 25% carbs.

Maybe someone on here already knows the answer.

EDIT: THis is for the chicken - not the Turkey.

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288 (Ketone 0.6) +5 311

Hi there Violet!

How is the feeding going today? Has Garland been keeping her food down?
Any other numbers since the +5?

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288 (Ketone 0.6) +5 311

Okay! So I HAVE to tell you guys this. Remember back in my original thread I talked about how Garland at night, once the kids are in bed, would come out to the rest of the house to snuggle and play? Well tonight as soon as she heard me coming from the babies room, I heard her meowing at the door. So I let her out, she walked into the living room and started sharpening her nails on the carpet (a bad habit shes had for forever) Then she walked into the playroom and curled up on a blanket that was on the floor in there. After that I went into the kitchen to give Connick his dinner. I opened the can, she came running LOL (not superfast, but she came all the same) Meowed while I put the food out on a plate and everything (not as loud as she used to though) Connick eats wet food, but its not the low carb kind. I just grab him whatever, a good variety mix. This one was a FF gravy one. Even though shes not allowed to have it, I wanted to see what would happen. So I continued, and pretended nothing was up... sat the food down. She went over and ate some! Not a lot, but some! Her first bite of food in 24 days. Then she took a couple licks of water and went back up to the playroom for a snooze. I just stood there in awe LOL :) Shes still not up to par, shes still not ready to eat on her own.. but we are getting closer everyday :)

And she hasnt thrown up today either.

WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!! Seeing the sparks of improvement will refill your heart every day. More and more will come.

Did you start the ondansetron today? And did you read my earlier post about the tube sock to protect the bandage and etube from scratching?

No, my husband had to take my car to work this morning (hence Ive been housebound) so hes picking it up on his way home so I can start it either late tonight or in the morning. I did see your post about the sock :) Thanks, Im gonna try that tonight after I change her bandage again

Thanks for the extra eyes. No thats not right. I gave her 2.75. It must not have gotten all my type :) And thanks for the "dial" technique. It helped with her PM shot a lot

So glad to hear that she is coming around. That first taste of food on her own is such a great sign. Keep doing what you are doing. The love and devotion, no doubt, is helping a lot as well. So many people here are keeping you and Garland in our thoughts.

Re: 8/25 Garland AMPS 288 +5 311 +7 330 PMPS +345 & an updat

Thanks for all the happy posts! :) Im ecstatic to see the steps in her recovery. 2 weeks ago I was preparing myself for the worst, and now I have hope for many more years with my sugar baby :) And its ALL because of you here on FDMB ((hugs))

I did her +2 about 20 minutes ago. It was a 266. I was a bit taken back by the number (Im not used to seeing numbers in the 200's)... Also, of note, is I used a different meter for this test. Venita was kind enough to send me a Contour. This testing was my first time using it. My usual meter is a ReliOn

Looking good there!
For tomorrow mornings shot, use the R only if her AMPS is above 375
And she has not been vomiting
And you are able to get at least a +1 and +3 or +2 and +4

(I use the Contour for BK)
