Yesterday's Condo

Good morning. Just posted Apollo's AMBG 134.

For his AM feeding we tried Purina Pro Plan Chicken and Liver Entree. He seemed to like it and ate a decent amount. Looks like the Fancy Feast Chicken and Tuna Feast Flaked dinner from last night might have raised his BG a little? Or would that be too long of a time between readings to make that assumption?

Hey there John ~O)

I haven't stopped Apollos condo for a while - just checked out his ss - wow!

Regarding your food question, it's' hard to say - I think it depends on the carb count and how long it has been since he ate.

What's the WCR? Alll Ps in place? Is he maintaining his weight?

He had his PM feeding at 6pm EST, and I left a little out for him to graze. I think the food is 8% carb according to Binky's page.

He seems to be normal. Definitely MUCH improved behavior since his BG is now lower. He is eating and has an appetite, but he just doesn't eat a whole lot. Maybe that is just the way he is. We are trying different foods now to see if I can find one he will eat more of. He eats anywhere from one to one and a half 3 oz cans a day. Since he is a 12 lb cat I would like to see that closer to at least two 3 oz cans a day or more, if possible. Funny thing is if I go to give him the Purebite chicken treats he eats them like he never ate before. But when I give him AM and PM feedings he eats, but never with the same interest. Last time at the vet a few weeks ago he was maintaining his 12 lbs, so I am not going to worry too much about it unless he starts dropping weight.

Peeing is fine, water intake is fine. I brush him constantly as he tends to get hairballs. Pooping every few days (black-ish in color, but vet said that's just the wet food causing that). To be honest, I'm not 100% sure on the poop schedule as I have 2 other cats that use the same box, but I know their usual "poop spots" in the box, so I can usually figure out who is doing what.

Overall I'm thrilled with the progress he has made thus far. Since getting rid of the dry food and giving him Lantus, he has improved so much and he has come so far over the last month or so.

he really has done amazing, john!

the black poop though . . . mine eat fancy feast and there's nothing black in their litter box. in people, i *think* black can mean digested blood - an implication that there's some irritation farther up the digestive system. although i know you're doing regular vet visits with him and i'm not sure what you'd even be looking for, perhaps a low red blood cell count that might indicate anemia from loss of blood? i don't want to throw an extra worry out there, but black isn't normal.

eta: i believe a vet could examine the stool and determine if there is blood in there or if it's nothing to worry about.

Yeah I thought the same thing when I saw it the first time. When he got an enema for constipation his poop was very black and had a lot of hair in it. Also it smelled horrible. The vet used wooden sticks to break it apart and inspect it. She said not to worry about the black color when I questioned it. Then this week I noticed when I came home one day that he had used the litter box and his poop was very soft (almost liquidy) and very black in color. Now the soft part I totally expected as I had been giving him Miralax over the last several days. Also I was giving him 1/4 a 10mg tab of Pepcid AC daily. I have since stopped with the Miralax and Pepcid AC. Could the Pepcid AC and/or Miralax also be making his poop black-ish? Maybe it was just the remnants of the enema solution clearing out what had been backed up in there for a while?

I am definitely going to keep an eye on it and if it doesn't change I can take a sample into them for analysis. Also I noticed that since he doesn't eat that much and he is now on all wet food, he doesn't poop nearly as often as he used to when on dry food, but I was told that is normal too.

One more thing to mention. He isn't just on just FF anymore. I have been experimenting with different foods for AM and PM feedings. He has been through many different foods over the past few weeks, so that might play a factor too.

Apollo's PMBG is 122.

I fed him EVO 95% Chicken and Turkey for PM feeding. He ate about 2 bites and walked off. He just doesn't seem at all interested in eating tonight. Not sure if it's just the food or what. May try to offer him a FF Appetizer in a bit, so he at least has some food in his belly. So frustrating.

Apollo is doing amazing!! The food thing is definitely a challenge for those of us who don't have food motivated cats. Tarragon eats FF because I have spent my life savings trying to find anything else he will eat and it literally all went down the drain. I'm glad you have found some other foods that Apollo will eat. Tarragon is not very carb sensitive so I don't see a spike with FF classic.

Have a great night John!
