Zener is doing fine this morning. I had to chase him around a bit but he ended up eating just fine. I added a drop of honey at +1 since he'd dropped from his PS value. I hope that was the bounce from the greens yesterday (anti-jinx).

Our friends just released their new book and they dedicated it to Zener! They wrote part of it in Sept 2010 at our house while cat sitting, pre FD. He LOVES it! OK, he loves that bit of pill pocket stuck to it. :lol: :lol: :lol:


Here is our civie Tillie. We have a sign that says "For the best seat in the house, move the cat." That's my chair and Anne's very, very soft blanket. She had to knead that blanket for at least 10 minutes before she settled down.

It was great to see Jill visiting condos last night and this morning. Hope DH is continuing to do well in his recovery. I would love to see an Alex condo with a DH update. Thinking of Rocket and Claudia, Shane and Martica (Shane is new to LL), Christie, and of other ailing kitties, beans and droolers. Happy Wednesday LL!

That is so crazy about the book. My DS was telling me about it over Christmas. I don't know if she has bought it yet but I know that she was looking forward to it. I will have to tell her that it is dedicated to Zener. How cool is that?

I will have to ask her. I'm not sure but her and my DSIL are very involved with the Iowa LGBT chapter in Des Moines and at Iowa State.

@Linda - feline literacy must be responsible for all these kitties that seem to read their condos! :lol:

@Melissa and Mr T - it's a small world in so many ways. Zener was a big help on the book, one of the authors is an early morning writer and Zener would get up with her and keep her company. He also is the most positive critter, including beans, we've ever been around, so when she was stuck and frustrated on some concept, Zener would help with his positive attitude! :razz:

@Devon - Zener is reading his condo again and following your most excellent suggestion! :-D

Looks like Zener may have bounced off the nice greens in his yesterday morning cycle and we had a pink sunrise. He is already back to yellow though, so his patterns are definitely flattening out, in a rolling hills sort of way, post-dental. He is on his condo, Versailles, soaking up the heat. Forecast today in the low 50s so more snow melt in our yard and muddy paddy paws.

I would be cautious in letting Z-man too close to that book. LL has a secret chapter of CALC (the Cats Against Literacy Campaign), a radical feline organization that seeks the overthrow of the United States and the creation of a nation dominated and controlled by cats that can be accomplished only by driving down the literacy rate in humans. I'm pretty sure Willie is a member. *nod*

How exciting that he gets a book dedicated to him, though! I'm sure that ALONE makes it a great read! :-D :-D :-D

Correction: Zener is mentioned in the acknowledgements (not the dedication) but he is still very proud of the book. :-D :-D Ellen would get up at 4 am to write and every day Zener would ask to go outside. And every day Ellen would not let him out until it was light. :lol:

@Roni - looks like Zener is following in Moonie's paddy paws with the poor appy tonight. And we did get a touch of the blue today. :razz:

Well, we thought the sutures might still be bothering him a little (they are still in for about another week), so we added some bupe since his appy was poor at shot time. Lately he has been asking for food around +11 and none of that tonight. We were a little worried about giving him the insulin since we could hardly get him to eat his regular 8%, but with fortiflora and a bit higher carb we got him to eat a little bit. Will watch his numbers closely.

Nice to see Zener coming back down from those stinkus pinkus numbers this morning but so sorry he does not have a good appy. Poor, sweet boy.

Love the pics of him and Tilly but have to ask (obviously I missed it somewhere)...."LGBTQ"? Gracie and Tobey are so excited to know someone famous!!!

I sure hope Zener gets his appy back. Come on Zener!! Please eat for your beans! Just because you are a celebrity does not mean that you need to be super thin thin. How exciting about the book. We are all going to have to buy it and have Zener autograph it with his paw print.

Unless there's a problem, those sutures should be pretty well dissolved. Does your vet want to do a check about now? I asked to have one of the vet techs from my vet's office come by to check Gabby's mouth. They usually schedule within 10 - 14 days. I think Zener's being the male equivalent of a diva because he's got a mention in a book!

Sienne: we took him in Tuesday to the vet and everything looked good. The stitches were still there and the vet thought it would be another week before they dissolved.

*gasp* Zener is a celebrity?!? that's awesome. we always knew he was a special kinda guy! if i were you, i'd get his pawprint in the book by the acknowledgments!

i hope he gets his appetite back - poor little buddy. it does always seem to be something, doesn't it.

i'd forgotten about trying oregano as an appetite enhancer - have you tried that one yet? you can sprinkle it on his food - it's related to catnip, apparently.

We don't think it's time for a 911 on our condo, but we are getting very worried. Zener's hardly ate at PMPS and we gave him his insulin because he has been eating ok post-dental. We gave him some pepcid and a little bupe. He has not eaten since, except for a few treats with honey, and we've tried everything but cypro (appetite stimulant) and syringe feeding. His numbers are dropping and we can't get him to eat even his treats now. We decided to try syringe feeding rather than cypro, in case his tummy is upset and that's the problem. Liz has mixed up some 17% with water and mashed it up and syringe fed him about 2mL of 17%. We'll test again in 30 minutes.

PMPS 249, 0.1oz 8% & 0.4oz 11%, 1PP with 3mg Zobaline, 0.1mL bupe
+1.5 241, would not eat
+3 118, 4 treats, a few licks of baby food beechnut chicken and chicken broth
+3.5 95, 1 treat, 2mL of 17%FF mashed with water via syringe

We've not syringe fed before but read directions on a condo here at FDMB. So, we have paws crossed we did okay. He is drinking a bit of water right now.

We gave 2mL of the mixture, and about 1mL of karo with syringe and will test in 15 minutes. He is not symptomatic and has been as low as 62, but he is not eating and before when he was low he would eat.

give him some honey and then follow it with a little HC (syringed).

Have you tried just getting him to lick the gravy off his food (add a little water if you need to). HC should have a lot of gravy on it if it comes to that.

I syringe fed Tawny several times during her recent illnesses and if I remember correctly I was only able to get about 15 mls into her at a time, about 2 mls at a time, every couple of hrs. Did you try finger feeding him? When Tawny wouldn't eat on her own b4 she had her e-tube she would eat a little off my fingers but she refused to eat if I didn't finger feed her. She just wanted to be babied cuz she didn't feel good. And she got it!

Thanks for your help. We are feeling a little overwhelmed. Zener is not symptomatic, just not eating tonight and we don't know why. Dental follow up was good. We gave pepcid and bupe shortly after shot time.

Just got the 20 minutes test, so about ~4.3 and it was 71. We gave him 2mL of the 17% smashed with water and honey, then 2mL karo. We don't have any ice cream darn it, though Zener has not been an ice cream eater before. He is not very happy about the syringe feeding and all the handling and we don't want to get him too worked up with low numbers either.

try to stay calm because he'll pick up on any nervousness. 71 is better, but we still need to bump him up a little more.

i'd try the honey followed by HC gravy and/or HC food.

is there anything high carb that he especially likes... even if it's people food? if so, try to tempt him with it.

Okay, we used the HC with honey and a little karo. Just tested again +4.7 (20 minutes) and it was 115. Shall we syringe feed with or without honey?

syringing small amounts is the way to go. we don't want him to vomit because his tummy is too full.

let him drink some, but not a lot. try to clear the taste in his mouth using HC food or gravy.

911 can come off, but don't hesitate to use it again.

Okay. Tried offering him some of his best food, but still won't eat. We gave another 2mL of the HC & water mixture in the syringe. Will test again in 30 minutes. I'll remove the 911 unless we get panicked again. Thank you!

I'm just coming on for Ni Ni, but saw your 911!! I have syringe fed Moonie at times, and in the beginning she didnt like it, but finally let me do it.. You are doing great and he is responding very well..

Thanks Roni, I would say we were pretty freaked out and now just anxious. We had not syringe fed before and are worried that we will have to keep doing this. Will Zener want to eat on his own again? We have appetite stimulant called cypro but opted to not use that because we were worried he could be nauseated and that was why he wouldn't eat. He is acting okay, just not eating. And you're right, it makes us really crazy.

We are in great hands with Jill and so glad she is here.

May be premature, but what should we consider for his dose tomorrow? We know he went below 70 for a decrease, but this was with hardly any food on board. And we are concerned about what to do in the morning if he won't eat again, and why he might not be eating tonight.

it's your call on the MC or HC.
if it were me, i'd probably opt for HC only because it's getting late and i'd want to get some sleep before the alarm went off in the morning. remember, he can still drop once the honey/karo wears off.

tomorrow morning you'll have to play it by ear.... base your decision on whether you'll be home to monitor. i've had to monitor alex very carefully anytime i've given her a full dose when she's not eating. you'd have to do the same. always err on the side of caution.

i'm concerned about the cause of his inappetance...

+5.7 177. We gave him another 2mL of HC and will try to get some sleep before his AMPS in about 6 hours.

We are VERY concerned about his inappetance. He has been eating quite well up until tonight. He ate fine this morning but when he usually starts asking for food around 5 pm, nothing tonight. We got him to eat only about .4oz at shot time, then he would not eat any after that, until we started the syringe feeding. He is 2 weeks post dental and his recheck on Tuesday was great. In fact, he had gained weight this week.

If he is still not eating in the morning, we can call our vet and try to get in to see what might be the problem. Are there specific things we should ask the vet to check for, other than his mouth?

did they take dental x-rays after they were done to make sure they got every little piece out?

Jill, we were concerned about his mouth too and took him back one week following the procedure because his numbers had spiked and his appy had decreased (but not disappeared). We had stopped bupe just about the time his numbers went up and started that back, and his numbers came down. We had stopped the bupe again yesterday after our 2nd recheck at the vet where all looked good. We had great help from Sienne and others before Zener's dental for ABs, pain meds and post procedure x-rays. Also the vet kept each little piece of the roots to show us what and how she removed the teeth.

Oh my, Liz just came in saying he acted like he was hungry all of a sudden! She was clicking his bowls together while washing them and he came over like he wanted something. She gave him his regular food and he acted like he wanted to eat it, then walked away. She gave him some 11% fancy feast chicken florentine, that our civvie eats, and he ate about 2 teaspoons!
