Jesse's numbers really improved when I started giving him Miralax for constipation. However, on the 28th they shot up again. I can't get spot checks during the day, but the evening numbers weren't much better (I didn't get PM nadir though).

I was thinking maybe the insulin was pooping out (it was open 30 days when his numbers went up). But if you look at Spock's spreadsheet (they share the insulin), his numbers aren't too bad. There's not a lot left in the pen, but I'd like to avoid wasting it if I can.

Although I was in denial, I then thought that maybe he needed a dose increase. This morning's AMPS was 200 and +3.5 was 75 so I guess that rules out an increase.

I'd welcome any opinion about what you think might be going on. I haven't given him Miralax for 2 days because I'm thinking it's not good to give it every day. Does anyone know?

Thanks and Happy New Year to everyone!!

Re: 12/31 Jesse AMPS 200 - opinions?

dosing is often difficult and tricky when a kitty is on antibiotics for infection. the infection itself will usually cause higher numbers. sometimes the antibiotic contains a sugar derivative to make it more palatable. as the infection clears the numbers could come down quickly. it's a tough balancing act which requires careful monitoring.

miralax: as far as i know it's safe to give it daily. one of my civvies who has the beginning stages of mega colon receives 1/8 teaspoon mixed in food twice a day. we haven't seen any adverse effects and he's been on it for quite some time.

hope this helps...

I just did a quick search for Albon. It doesn't say that sugar's in the oral suspension however, it does say it's in a custard flavored base. I suspect there's sugar in the oral med. That may be why you're having issues with Jesse's numbers. (And if you're giving the pill, just ignore this comment.)

Thanks for the replies! I didn't even think it might be the Albon. The vet isn't convinced there's an infection, he just gave it to him as a precaution. And yes it is the liquid.

He's still got one more dose of the AB but his PMPS is great at 109. I guess the true answer to it all is that he is just being a cat

Good to know about the Miralax. I was concerned because it is a laxative. I just wish he would tell me when he's going to poo so I could watch :-D

Hope everyone has a happy & safe night. I'm just going across the street to work on a puzzle with my neighbor.
