I've been thinking about the way my vet acted as if giving Sid "R" was no big deal and that I should just watch him. He made it sound as if R was just a faster acting form of Humulin N. He never once mentioned that he could drop really far very quickly. I'm so glad I posted the question about R because I wouldn't have known otherwise. Actually Sid has dropped like that on lantus several times. I was giving him a very small amount - right near the very top line of the syringe what I was referring to as 0.1 - not the first 1/2 mark - and still he dropped into the 20s. He would do this even after eating a good meal.

I definitely agree with all of your concerns about R and I'm going to opt that he not have it anymore even while at the vet. It probably is making him drop low and they aren't catching it because they are testing every 2 hours instead of every hour.

I think my next step is going to be prednisolone in the hope that reducing inflammation may help Sid regulate/utilize the insulin more effectively. I know that pred raises bg but it doesn't in every case and sometimes helps make things better. The only way I'm going to get Sid's bg under control is by getting the underlying diseases under control.

Morning Lydia - kudos to you! I know nothing on R, but do applaud you for questioning your vet. I just think it's out roll as beans - to make sure we are doing the best for our furkids, and if that means questioning decisions, then so be it. Good luck to with getting all under control. :-D have a great day today!

Regarding the vet, it makes me wonder. I appreciate his being open to listening to what I want for Sid - which is a good think because when it comes right down to it, I am the one who decides what is best based on the knowledge I have at the time. What I don't appreciate is not being given the whole story of what the potential risks are. Well, I guess I already know what the risks are - I think what I needed him to explain better was the difference between R and the longer acting insulins such as NPT, prozinc, lantus, etc. That is what he should be making clearer to clients. I will have to let him know that.

Binks,

I would wuv dat.

Love Sid

I agree with you completely, Lydia. When Mookie was diagnosed with FD in late November, his vet didn't tell me about the possibility of a hypo episode or how to handle it. I had never heard of it until I came here. At the time I even asked about risks. I was sent home with a prescription and instructions to give 1.5U of Lantus twice daily, 12 hours apart, with "the possibility of trying home monitoring sometime in the future" and "let me know how he's doing in a couple of weeks."

Good grief. I could have killed him.
