Good morning LL and happy Caturday!

Baileygirl is *practically* green this morning, if you squint you can see it! Kitties are all doing well today, sleeping in the sun. I am feeling a lot better, I got lots of sleep. I could have kept going actually, but got up for test/feed/shoot and I think I'll stay up and see if I can get some stuff done.

My Blue-man had his vet visit yesterday about his bum knee, and we got some new meds started. He got his first Adequan injection, and they are going to teach me how to do it next week. They also gave us Zubrin (tepoxalin), the vet said it's another NSAID like Rimadyl. It is not cheap  so we may end up going back to Rimadyl unless I see drastic improvement. It's a dog-only drug, but has anyone here had any experience with it? I've never heard of it and will be doing some research, just thought I would throw the question out there.

Have a great day LL!

Re: 1/28 Bailey AMPS 105 and a dog question

we used Tepoxalin with Tam's Burmese Mountain Drooler...
it seemed to work very well, but as he is an old, old fellow...
due to the expense we went back to Rimadyl.

He seems to see good effects from both...

and NICE amps, bailey!

Re: 1/28 Bailey AMPS 105 and a dog question

Very nice AMPS for Bailey! Melissa, if you have never heard of a drug some research is definitely needed.

Are the standards any different in determining whether a drug is safe for dogs and cats? I'm guessing they might be.

Hoping Bailey has a lovely day surfing low blues and green.

Re: 1/28 Bailey AMPS 105 and a dog question

IMHO, Rimadyl - not necessarily a good drug unless you're treating high pain levels. Check into vetprophen - basically ibuprophen for dogs. It's cheaper than Rimadyl and I've found handles mid-level pain well. Rimadyl can have some nasty side effects but sometimes the benefit outweighs the risks. I had a severely arthritic chow mix rescue that took Rimadyl often, I used it for Samson (MeanBean neighbor's dog) for about 3 weeks when he got hit by a car. He had a hip broken and shoved out of socket and all the teeth on one side broken. I now use the vetprophen for him when I notice him hurting, seems to work well for him.

HUGS,

Re: 1/28 Bailey AMPS 105, +2 103 and a dog question

Hi Celi, thanks for sharing your experience. I have a feeling we will probably do the same thing, but it is worth a try.

Hey Rosalie, unfortunately I know next to nothing about vetty drugs. There was an elective on it offered when I was in school, I didn't feel like I had time to take it, and now I really wish I had! I know dog/cat drugs are still regulated by the FDA and they have to submit studies to get approved, but I am pretty sure the standards they have to meet are different.

Lyresa, hmmm, I thought Vetprofen and Rimadyl were the same drug. :? I will need to look into that too  Blue has pretty severe arthritis/ligament damage in one of his back knees, and he has been getting worse. We have been using Rimadyl/tramadol on alternating days for the past year or so, and he did well on that until maybe a month ago. I know Rimadyl can have some scary side effects, and we monitor lab work, but it has totally been worth it for Blue. I like doing it every other day to cut down on his exposure, and we will keep that up as long as we can. Hugs back at you, hope your crew is doing well.

Bailey feels like she had her condo hijacked! She is doing fine, nice and flat so far... still napping, not much to report!  Thanks guys for your thoughts, much appreciated!

Re: 1/28 Bailey AMPS 105, +2 103 and a dog question

Since I know nothing about the dog meds, I'll bring it back to Bailey. :-D Great numbers Bailey!

Re: 1/28 Bailey AMPS 105, +2 103 and a dog question

Hi Melissa. Bailey started her day beautifully. Nice and slow. :-D

My granddoggy gets Tram for his arthritis. He started out on Rimadyl, but DD didn't want it for long term, but I don't know why. Big help, huh?
He does very well on the Tram.

Maybe I need to quit trusting my vet completely...just discovered that the vetprophen is generic rimadyl.... Darn...as I walk away muttering...."I knew better...I knew better..."....

We still use vetprophen with no tummy problems where we DO have tummy issues with rimadyl...wonder why? What's different then?

Re: 1/28 Bailey AMPS 105, +2 103 and a dog question

Lyresa, good question, I have no idea. I assume they are made by different companies, something must be different in their formulations. Glad the vetprofen works for you guys, anyway!

Re: 1/28 Bailey AMPS 105, +2 103 and a dog question

My doggie Pumpkin(GA) had some adverse reactions to Rimadyl, tummy problems, etc not good for her--
I would try something else--I actually take tramadol, works for me! Hope you find the right combo!

GREEN Bailey, Green!!!!~! Think Green you are almost there!!!--Maybe tonite!!!
Husg & Love from us!!!

Wow...I LOVE the stuff we learn here!

now I'm going to check out options for Nip. :-D
( My sis with her humor named him Nigel Nip Simmons)

Re: 1/28 Bailey AMPS 105, +2 103 and a dog question

Nice day for Bailey!!

So glad you started the adequan for Blue. I hope it helps him as much as it has Charlie. We just use Rimadyl. Our vet monitored Charlie's liver pretty close at first. He explained it that if a dog will have issues with it, it would happen right away. He says it doesn't occur from prolonged use. I don't know whether I believe that but I do trust our vet and he has been great with the arthritic issues. Did they say anything about the JD food? We've never had the other meds.

They did give Mason Flomax. Great stuff. I've had that with my stones. The morphine is brutal.

Ah...sometimes we can be quite a repository of information....from behavior to insulin remissions!!!!

I wonder what would happen if one vet got us all in a room together and just let us all discuss the medical issues for animals for a day....?

Re: 1/28 Bailey AMPS 105, +2 103, +4 93, +9.5 69

Thanks everyone for your input, lots of good stuff to think about! We are doing 'PT' with him too, we did some hills today... and we all came home and took a nap. :-D :? Hopefully Bailey was surfing OK during that time... she looks good right now!

Nigel is a great name for a dog, I think :-D so dignified!

Wonderful numbers for Bailey today.....I think my glasses are only seeing green!!!

Hope your sweet drooler, Blue Man gets some relief and help. He has such awesome beans.

Sorry Bailey-girl that your buddy got all the attention today!

Have a great evening.

That is a big drop for Vyktor today, I hope he slows down and surfs. How is he feeling with all these blues?
Behaviour wise he does seem to prefer the yellow floor but I've explained to him that it's an illusion and soon blue will be where he feels best - didn't want to scare him with the fact there's another floor to go yet!

In respect of the drooler (see Bailey I respect it's your condo and I won't dignify him with a name!!) you haven't mentioned that you are so I mention it just in case - Glucosamine, Chrondroitin and MSM mix can do wonders for arthritis and is reputed to actually do some repair work. Sounds like he needs more for now but there's no reason you can't use it in combination and hopefully get some repairs going on there too.

I had a great dane x mastiff that came to me as a 5 year old and was already having a horrible time with arthritis. The vet wanted to give him rimadyl but I view that as a drug of last resort for an ongoing condition so I refused and put him on the Glucosamine, Chrondroitin and MSM mix instead. He improved no end and it was another 6 years and quite near the end before he needed rimadyl.
