I made an album of Sid showing him each of the 3 times he was hospitalized for DKA in January. (He spent more time in the hospital in January than he did at home.) I know he would not be where he is right now (snoozing in his favorite spot at home) if it weren't for all of the good advice and support I received on FDMB. So I just want to make sure you all know how much I appreciate everyone here!!! Sid says thank you too :YMHUG:

Sid is an amazing kitty, and I love hearing reports on him. Give Sid lots of loving scritches from us. Have a nice day, Lydia.

ETA - Darn my slow computer won't let me look at the photos w/out closing down. I'll try later as would love to see.

Hi Lydia & Sid,
Your album is an inspiration for all kitties, Sid. It tells them that when a kitty and his mamabean pull together they can can lick illness. Lydia, it is so great to see him relaxing in his favorite spots. You and he are doing a terrific job.

BIG HUGS to you both,

Ella & Rusty

The pneumonia is better. He has finished the antiobiotics and his breathing rate is improved. It is usually over 40 though so the pneumonia is not completely gone. He is not gaining weight as well as he was at first (maybe that is normal). He may have dropped a little despite eating what I feel is a good amount. I know at one time Desi sent me a food chart tracker type thing that she used for Tinkerbell. I have been monitoring him and he eats at least one can (5.5) to 1.5 cans (5.5) per day. I'm thinking maybe I should mix some of the Iams high calorie with his regular food to give him a little boost.

All things considered though, he is doing much better than I ever thought possible that's for sure.

hai Binks ~ Fanks Ah sen u big kissez bak luv Sid

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

I would definitely add more calories if you can. If he'd eat MaxCal its 330 calories a can and only 3% carbs if I remember correctly. Quite high in fat. There are some kitten foods that I hear are very high in calories - like Wellness. I don't know the carb or calorie content. For a tiny kitty that is a very decent amount of food. There are other reasons why a kitty doesn't gain though. A sick cat often needs more calories than a healthy cat. This was the case with Maverick when he got his feeding tube.

Why did you stop the antibiotics if the pneumonia is still there? Isn't that a bad thing - and the pneumonia could become drug resistant and come back fast and hard?

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

It wasn't my choice to stop the antibiotics. Sid finished them and the vet did not represcribe them. Sid is doing so much better. He was just checked on Tuesday and Sid's breathing has improved from what it was. I think the only way the antibiotics would help anyway is if the pneumonia is bacterial because if it is viral then wouldn't anyway. And they can't tell without tapping his lungs and we are definitely not doing that. He is eating, not coughing, or breathing hard (like he was), relatively active (attacking his brofur sometimes), so I think if he were doing really poorly, we would have continued the antibiotics. He is also having solid stools now where before he was having diarrhea (I think from the antibiotics). I'm keeping an eye on him and we will restart the antibiotics if he starts declining.

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

I just mixed a tablespoon of the high calorie with some Special Kitty chicken that he likes. He is eating it. Also his PMPS +12 is 74!!!! No insulin obviously because he may still be dropping but wow :o

Lydia, Sid is really looking good. You asked how we measure food so accurately? We use a small digital scale US-Magnum 1000XR from Harbor Freight. It's made in China and cheap, but works fine. A kitchen scale would work too.
John

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

Thank you John!! I have a small food scale but it is not digital. It sounds like your scale would give more precise readings so I am going to look around for one. (It is kind of hard to get something not made in China. I do try when possible.)
Right now I try to eyeball the amount of food based on the can size which is not exactly accurate and I do not weigh the food because he pretty regularly eats 1 can to 1.5 cans per day of the 5.5 oz size. I like the way you know exactly how much Tess is eating though.

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

Love that Sid is doing great! Sounds like he'll be riding green/blue for awhile. I would try to catch him about 8 pm seems that will be the time he'll be rising. Love the photos! You're such a good Mommy :-D

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

So Happy Sid is doing Better!

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

Hopefully I didn't jinx us - Sid is showing a 0.7 reading on the ketone meter tonight despite having pretty good numbers. I thought anyway. I did give him 60 ml SQ.

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

Thanks Karrie. I am going to verify with the vet on Monday that Sid doesn't need antibiotics just to be sure

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

So glad Sid is doing so well. I hope the 0.7 ketone reading turns out to be nothing. Still sending healing vines just in case. You're such a great mama bean!

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

I'm thinking that Sid probably couldn't feel my scritches through his face book page so could you deliver in person please :-D

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

Thank you for the vines Barb.
I think I can give Sid a few scritches for you and maybe a few kisses on his head too, Serryn :-D

Re: 3/24 Sid still here and doing fine today thanks to FDMB

Many, many kisses
