DC is having a better day today.
I did syringe feed him 5cc of Medi-Cal Recovery before bed last night.
So far today he has been eating small amounts on his own.
No vomit since yesterday morning.
I gave him 1/4 pepcid before AM shot.
The vet just called and told me that DC has Pancreatitis.
He wants me to continue with the Pepcid bid and to give a pain killer also. He also said to keep doing the SubQ fluids as needed.
Does anyone know what is the best pain killer for a diabetic cat?
Any advice would be appreciated. I know I have lots of research to do again.

I'm sorry to hear about DC's diagnosis, but at least you know what's going on.
J.D. was recently diagnosed with pancreatitis, when his Spec fPL came back with a result of 7.4.
This is all new to me, so I feel like a newbie with pancreatitis, myself. I joined the FPS group for questions.
J.D. was on Buprenex for pain and is still getting Ondansetron for nausea.

:sad: but as Dyana says as least you know what's going on now and can treat accordingly. Bupe certainly seems to be the most popular, the other one I have heard mentioned (but not used myself) is gabapentin. I don't know if you've seen this website before, it explains a bit about vet drugs http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_gabapentin.html the bupe is listed under buprenorphine.

Thank you. I just spoke to the vet and he's suggesting buprenorphine or tramadol.

Most of the folks seem to lean toward bupe. Tramadol can lower BG in some cats.

FWIW, gabapentin is better for neuropathic pain rather than the kind of pain associated with p'titis.

Tramadol is extremely bitter. The first time I gave Oliver some tramadol, he must have got a taste of it despite being hidden in some cream cheese, and he drooled and drooled and drooled for a couple minutes... he looked like a bulldog with so much drool. I was worried he would not stop drooling.

Gabapentin is good for long term use, for chronic ongoing pains, and I gave gaba for both Shadoe and Oliver.
When it came to pancreatitis, I also gave Shadoe some buprenex as it's a different pain that I think is more sharp, not dull. Buprenex worked very well for her and her fPLI tests were usually in the mid teens. Oliver was always mild, and under 3.9.

I'm so sorry, Noreen! It sounds like the vet has you on the right track.

I definitely recommend the bupe as well for all the reasons previously mentioned. PLUS...I have tried tramadol in three of my cats and it makes them all hyper not to mention the horrible taste....and I had it compounded with
a fish flavor.

DC seems to be feeling a little better.
I gave him 40ml of SubQ fluids @ AM +5 and syringe fed him 5cc of Medi-Cal Recovery @ AM +5.5
He did eat a bit throughout the day on his own, just not enough.
He's very good about letting me give the fluids, but he does not like to be syringe fed or taking his pepcid.
I need to find a better way to give the pepcid.

I'm sorry about the pancreatitis diagnosis, Noreen....but as others have said, at least you have an answer!

I have to agree with Marje about the Tramadol, it does have unpleasant side effects with some kitties. One of my cats did just fine with it, the other wouldn't eat, wouldn't move and did not sleep while it was in her system. We used half the recommended dose as we were aware of the side effect risk. We used pill pockets to get around the taste issue. How are you giving the pepsid? If you haven't tried it, pill pockets may help....use a small piece, just enough to cover the pill, that way DC will be less tempted to chew it and will just swallow it down. The duck & pea pill pockets are FD friendly (no corn syrup)...the ones for dogs are fine also if you can't find the ones for cats.
