Good Morning, Everyone,

It's a cold, snowy morning (really snowing hard), but we are nice and cozy with our new storm windows! Rusty had a good night and at one point in the middle of the night gave me lots of kitty kisses and long head butts. (This was right after my phone sounded with a "message" about taking part in an iPad beta trial and getting a free iPad 3--it looked fraudulent, so I deleted it.) So since it was not the "ducks" that sounded, Rusty and I went back to sleep (Edward slept through it all).
This morning we had a good test, shot, and breakfast (2 sittings): 1 oz. Wellness turkey (40 kcal), 1 oz. By Nature Turkey & turkey liver (20 kcal). I used a scale to measure out the food. As I remarked yesterday, when I was learning to measure accurately, it surprised me how much volume of food there is in 1 ounce! Rusty and I had a "lite" play with the wand, and he is chillaxin' in his basket next to the radiator (today he chose the basket rather than his little bed or his cushion). I don't think he'll want to go outside today!

Rusty's number this morning is lower, so I hope that he'll be back to normal numbers (for him) soon.

Wishing you all a good day and continuing to send healing vines and good thoughts to BigMac, Sid, Rocket, Curry, and all kitties and beans in need of them,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 4/9 Rusty AMPS 146

A snowy morning??? Oh wow... no spring yet for you! Hopefully it will be good enough for a nice walk in the snow?

oh what fun with the early wake-up call.Too cool that Rusty knew it wasn't the right wake-up call, and back to sleep for you both. :-D

and I so need to start measuring Mannie's food... eyeballing it isn't always the best way to go. :?

Rusty - good start today! Think green OK? The lagoon needs is master!

Re: 4/9 Rusty AMPS 146

Morning Ella and Rusty, if you have snow, I wonder about my family in PA. I'll turn on the weather channel and see. Rusty is looking good for the start, so hopefully it will only get better the rest of the day. Have a nice day.

Re: 4/9 Rusty AMPS 146

Much more Rusty like numbers today. The need you at the Lagoon, Rusty.

I've been weighing Tess's food for over a year, it gets to be habit. We get the Wellness in the large 12.5oz cans and weigh it out into those little salsa take-out cups, toss the extras in the freezer and just have a day's worth in the fridge at a time. I use the same cups when I make the home made raw. And, yes, we wash them out and reuse.

Re: 4/9 Rusty AMPS 146

Hi guys .. snow? yikes .. we don't want anymore of that here! Rusty, I'm glad you are starting out the day in mid blues .. perhaps some green before the day is over? If you think green, perhaps the snow will stop and you'll see spring! :-D Have a great day guys!

Re: 4/9 Rusty AMPS 146, +5.5 117

Hi again,
Rusty went outdoors briefly in the snow and chased a squirrel, but decided to come back inside pretty quickly. I put out an ounce of By Nature Turkey & Turkey liver for lunch at +5.5 and he ate about 3/4ths of it so far (this is his pattern at lunch time; he more-or-less free feeds). Now he's taking a nap on his bed by the radiator.

I want to try to get him to lose about 12 ounces, but it seems that the amount of food I'm putting out now that I have started to weigh the ounces and count the calories is more than I put out when I just "eyeballed" what looked like a suitable amount of food. Rusty gained 2 ounces last week (he weighed in at 16 lb., 15 oz. on Saturday; of course it could be weekly fluctuation). According to the weight guidelines, a cat's required calories per day = 13.6 x optimal lean body weight in lbs. +70. By this calculation, if Rusty's optimal lean body weight is 16 lbs., he would require 287 calories in a 24-hour day. I don't think he gets nearly that many calories, yet he doesn't lose any weight (he's averaged 16 lbs., 12 oz. for a year now; when we adopted him he weighed 15 lbs., 8 oz.).
I'm a math cripple, so maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Re: 4/9 Rusty AMPS 146, +5.5 117

Hi, Ella - I started weighing Mookie's food, too, and was surprised by the volume in an ounce.

I convert to kilos by taking the current or desired weight: 16/2.2 = 7.27 kilos; 7.27 x 30 = 218; 218 + 70 = 288; 288 x 0.8 = 230.4 kcal/day. So for an ideal weight of 16lbs,he needs about 230 kcals a day. I think you just left off the last calculation.

You must live a lot farther north than I thought -- are you near Canada? I love snowy days: kitties sleeping in front of a fire, homemade soup on the stove, and a good book. I hope you're enjoying the day.

Re: 4/9 Rusty AMPS 146, +5.5 117, +9 129

Thanks, Randa! I don't understand the calculation (I really am a math cripple), but your figure makes much more sense to me, so I'm going to use the 230 kcals a day!!

Yes, we are less than 50 miles from the Quebec border. Montreal is the closest big city to where we live.

Thanks again,

Ella

Ella, at least you are trying to do the right thing by weighing, so you already are doing more then I can.
I'm a math cripple, so maybe I'm doing something wrong?

This title belongs to me! I just can't figure this all out. So I'm doing half can and tsp for snacks. Daphne never eats all her food, but always goes back for more (I guess you can say we free feed too then). If the left overs are more then a few hours, I try and measure what is there and clean off, and put fresh food in its place. When she runs out of the 1/2 can, then I count the tsp. she eats, which is about 3 a day. I really do want to learn to weigh, but for now, I have a lot of other issues I need to deal with. Daphne weighs 14 lbs. Her Vet said it's a good weight.

Good luck with the figures you have, and Rusty's diet/weight.

Re: 4/9 Rusty AMPS 146, +5.5 117, +9 129

Hi Ella, what a lovely day for Rusty. So he doesn't care to chase squirrels in the snow, huh?

I'm shocked that you even got snow today. We had sun all day, but extremely windy.
I had to go out for cat food (nothing else will get me out in wind), and I thought my little car was gonna get blown away.

I'm always surprised at how much food is packed into those 3oz cans of Fancy Feast. I guess Checks eats about an ounce then too... about a third of a can at a time.

Hi again, Rusty got to the green lagoon tonight! Yay!! I have been worried that there might be an underlying reason for his higher numbers. Now I can wait until tomorrow and see where we are!
