DC is looking much better today.
No more liquid-poo.
All P's are in place today except poop, which isn't surprising after yesterday.
I gave his Metronidazole & Ondansetron 2 1/2 hours before his AM shot and his pepcid with his shot.
He's had extra SubQ fluids and he's eating on his own today. So far he's eaten about 1/8 cup of his EVO kibble and 1/4 can of his Friskies LC.
He even seemed to enjoy his food.
He cuddled in bed with me all night on top of an electric blanket and he kept nice and warm.
I didn't want him to get a chill after his bath.
His eyes look clearer and he's not drooling today.
I'm just waiting to hear back from the vet, but with the weather the way it is, I don't think that we'll be going home today unless the vet thinks it's necessary.
I will continue with the extra fluids and his meds.
His numbers are still higher than I like, but I think a lot of that is due to him eating the EVO kibble.
Right now I'm just happy he's eating on his own.

I am glad to read this good DC report. Are you still holding off the Amoxicillin?
I spoke to the vet and he said not to give him the Amoxicillin yet.
I'm supposed to call them back tomorrow.
I am still away from home due to the weather and roads.

Re: 4/15 DC AMPS=283 +2=295

Go DC and go Noreen!!! So wonderful that he's enjoying his food again - even the LC - good boy DC

I didn't realise you were away from home dealing with this too. Are you in the tornado zones? They have even been reported on our news in Australia, very freaky stuff

No tornadoes near here. We had a blizzard last night, so the highways are pretty icy in some places.
They should be good by the time we go home Tuesday morning.

Sending warmth and healing, healing, healing your way!

WOW! on the roads...
we're closing in on 70 degrees here :?

Travel safely when you go, Noreen..

Re: 4/15 DC AMPS=283 +2=295

It sounds like he's doing much better, Noreen! I'm so glad to see he's improving. I hope the diarrhea stops now too. You're doing a wonderful job of nursing him.

I can't believe you're having blizzards there! It's been in the 80's here for 2 days. It was close to 90 after I made dinner last night! I decided no more oven without the ac on.

DC is not feeling so good right now.
He now seems to be very constipated. I'm guessing it's from the Ondansetron.
For the hour before his PM shot he kept struggling to poop. He finally went a bit on the floor that was hard as a rock.
His bum is very raw and red. The vet had told me to put Polysporin on it for a couple days because of the liquid-poo.
He's had a total of 150mg SubQ since his AM shot and I will give him more in about 2 hours.
I also gave him 0.1mg Bupe because he's moaning when I pick him up and he never does that. It could just be because he's constipated, but he seems like he's in pain.
I'm a little worried about how he'll react to it this time. It's half the amount the vet told me to give after he had the 0.4mg.
That time he was a total zombie and right out of it.
He ate over 3/4 can of his normal LC Friskies food today on his own.
I don't know if I should give him some Lax-a-Day for the constipation tonight or if I should do anything at all?
He still has 3 more doses of the Metronidazole that was prescribed because of the liquid-poo.
Has anyone had this problem before and if so what's the best way to deal with it?

Re: 4/15 DC AMPS=283 +2=295 +4.5=292 +8=311 PMPS=383 Questio

Racci is always constipated and I use the generic for Miralax, polyethylene glycol NF 3350 powder in water. I give 1/4 tsp bid. It's very safe and acts naturally. It doesn't interact with any other meds that I know of. You can probably get it at the drugstore. I don't know what your med Lax-a=Day is or if it will interact with what you're giving but why don't you call the er or the pharmacist and see if they will tell you? I would have no hesitation giving the miralax. It sounds like that's his problem. That can be painful especially when you already hurt!

He also might have eaten too much for so soon after starting to eat solids again. Are you watering his food down a lot? It might be easier on him to go slower with more liquid in his food.

I'm concerned about the pain though since he's been through so much. Could it be something else?

I wouldn't give any more of the anti-diarrheal for now..

Lax-a-Day is exactly the same as Miralax. We can't get Miralax in Canada anymory.

I always water his food down. He likes it very soupy. That's the only way he will eat it.

I don't think he's in a lot of pain. He just moaned when I tried to pick him up or touch him during the hour he was struggling to poop.

I wasn't going to give him his AM dose until after talking to the vet. That will be 2 hours after the dose time.
I do know that Ondansetron can cause severe constipation also, but at least it helps with the nausea.

I would try it tonight then. Have you given it to him before? Just in case: The normal starting dose is 1/8-1/4 tsp bid as needed. I mix Racci's with about 4mil of water and give it in syringes so she gets it right away and I know how much she got for sure. I give her water from a bowl to drink afterwards. Others put it in food or water. Racci smells it in food or water and is a lousy eater so I can't depend on her getting a full dose that way.

Same here. :)

That's good. You probably want to discuss making Miralax part of his ritual to go with his Ondansetron than because the nausea meds are important.

I hope it helps him feel better.

He's been getting it for a while, but it was stopped because of the liquid-poo. He will lick it right off the food.
I gave it to him about 45 min ago. I mixed it with water because I didn't really want him to eat just yet.

He normally gets 1/8tsp with his bedtime meal. I just didn't give it to him yesterday .

Maybe some vaseline (or suchlike - I would use pawpaw ointment but I'm not sure if you have that) would help smooth the pathway too.

Poor DC first liquipoo and now the opposite problem

The eating more is great news though

I've never even heard of pawpaw ointment. But I do have lots of vaseline.

I'm glad he got his dose and hope little Mr. DC has a nice movement and feels better. You're lucky he takes his meds so well. You might have to give more than usual to counteract the other medicine.

I would be careful about putting that vaseline inside him. The jar says not for internal use. I put a tiny bit on the outside of the anus though if she's having an especially hard time of it.

Good luck! I have to clean up and get ready for bed.

Pawpaw ointment is the best it is such a shame I can't send some over via warp speed. That one you could happily (well maybe not for DC!) use a bit more liberally - oh heck there's no polite way to say it - you could use it right up there

What dosage of Metronidazole are you giving?

I think you are giving 2 mg of Ondansetron twice daily? That could be reduced to 1 mg twice daily, or even once daily, if he still has nausea and seems to need it. I have not heard reports that it causes constipation in cats.

Bupe can cause constipation, but I know that today you gave it after the constipation. It's a liquid? Did you give .1 ml?

Is the bum raw and red because of irritation from the diarrhea, or is there a chance that his anal glands are infected or abscessed? Any infection there could be raising is numbers and making him feel sick.

They told me to just rub the vaseline on his bum not to use internally.

It is liquid and you're right it was 0.1ml not 0.1mg

The bum looks fine today. I rubbed some vaseline on it last night. I'm pretty sure it's from the diarrhea, his skin was even red and looked almost raw on the areas where it was all over him. That went away shortly after I gave him his bath.
