Rocket & his Mom

Member Since 2010
Hi LL Family,

I want to give you an update on Rocket.

He went to the ER on Monday May 7 after I found him almost unresponsive when I got home from work. I took his temp and he was 40.7C (105.3F)….I rushed him to the hospital where he was admitted right away. After waiting for a bit with no news the ER vet came by to tell me that indeed the temp I took at home was close to what they got there of 40.6C. He was put on IV (the picture below shows how they missed the catheter) right away and was told he would be staying the night.

I went home and a couple of hrs later I returned to make sure he was ok and to drop off some food, lab reports and an old t-shirt of mine. It broke my heart to see him so unresponsive though he perked up when he heard my voice.

The next morning I returned bright and early to check on him and to feed him. He seemed a little better but extremely tired. I went to work from there with a heavy heart. Then at lunch time I returned to go check on him. I fed him and he ate lots while I held the dish. He was more awake then previously. I spoke with the IM vet and he told me if Rocket looked this way by the time I was off work then perhaps he could come home that night.

After work I rushed to see him and he was discharged. When we got home Comet came to smell him and Rocket seemed so weak. I made sure he got peace and quiet at home. He was restless and it was a pretty rough night for me as well.

He was sent home with Baytril only. We are still awaiting for the urine culture results. But the IM vet indicated that if the culture came back negative he was leaning more towards the mass that Rocket has in his lung (he was not overly concerned with the one in the pancreas at this time). The way he explained it to me was that his body realizes it’s a foreign object inside and if there is scar tissue from the mass then a possibility is that it tends to get infected and since his immune system is low from the pred then he doesn’t have it in him to fight off the ‘infection’ making him develop high fevers. We can't operate on him.....not where the mass is nor at his age. So if that’s the case and if we want to still give him QOL then he will be most lilkely on abs for the rest of his life or at least until he doesn’t want to fight anymore…..the IM vet suggested doing the abs only on weekends as preventative measures. I will be discussing this with Rocket’s vet this coming Thursday as he has a follow up apt.

He looks pretty tired. Last night was the roughest yet. I got up at 3:30 am to syringe feed him. He has lost some weight. He is interested from time to time licking his banana. He no longer wants to go into the spare room…so he hasn’t been in our bedroom for over a yr now….with him not wanting to be in the spare room this really breaks my heart…..he is out by the dining room….he is not hiding….he is alert and his lb use has been ok….though I got scared yesterday if he was constipated but we got action late late in the night….so I was relieved….

Not sure where this is going to lead us. I will continue the fight so long as he still wants to. I’m not so sure how long we have but I will care for him and love him every day…..
I haven’t had much sleep thru the weekend either….the only thing that has helped is the not having to go to work.

Please continue to pray for us…but mainly for Rocket….i hope to get the results by tomorrow….

For those of you who have not seen these pics on FB.....

Re: 5/13-Rocket-update with pictures of my boy!

(((Claudia)))

He looks good in the photos with the nanner. He is doing amazingly well, considering how high his fever was, and how sick he was before he went to the ER. It is good that he responds well to the Baytril. It is too bad that it seems to affect his appetite. Bear Man was on Baytril long term, but he seemed to tolerate it well. I think that at some point we reduced to every other day dosing, if I recall correctly. I have never heard of the weekend only dosing. That is interesting. It will be interesting to hear the culture results. Sometimes they can have pyelonephritis, and still have a negative urine culture.

I think of you guys every day, and I am continuing to send prayers to Rocket.

Re: 5/13-Rocket-update with pictures of my boy!

Bless his little heart Claudia. I know you have had quite a time. I'll continue to send healing vines and prayers to Rocket that he will get stronger and stronger with each day. Maybe being at home will help him. He will let you know. He is such a handsome boy. Hang in there. Thinking of you both.
Happy Mothers Day.

Re: 5/13-Rocket-update with pictures of my boy!

thank you all!

Linda....the IM vet said Clavaseptin as a preventative measure from the fevers/infections recurring if indeed it is the mass in the lung.....he was not really concerned with the UTI per se.....

I don't know whether i'm coming or going.....have to write things down not to forget stuff and the IM vet wrote that med down for me to ask his reg vet....

we will see and hopefully i'll know the results tomorrow.....

Rocket does not tolerate the Baytril at all....

he was 8.33 kgs last week....today he is 8.14 kgs....down a touch....

Re: 5/13-Rocket-not good news

will be quick as i'm at work and i can't be on the internet

got the urine culture results and it was negative

which means we are dealing with the mass he has in the lung.....

i'm very upset

went home at lunch to feed him

will assess his QOL for sure....

Re: 5/13-Rocket-not good news :(

Sending tons of prayer, healing vines and white light to poor Rocket and you also Claudia.

Re: 5/13-Rocket-not good news

That mass has been there for some time, yes? Is there a reason why they believe it is the cause of his current issues? You don't need to answer that; I'm just saying that he has a lot of medical conditions going on, and so many interactions. You know it can't all be fixed, so he and you are living with it. He's a miracle kitty, and you're a miracle Mom to him. He knows you will give him whatever he needs. There is no greater love than that.

I lit a candle for Rocket and you at church last night, and do every week. You will know what he wants.

MJ
