sad to report that mr punkin let his membership in the CPC lapse this morning. ;-) this is probably the first time ever, and it's because we've switched him to a low-potassium food that will be easier on his kidneys: merrick's before grain turkey. low carb and low potassium, but apparently not as delightfully delicious as his beloved fancy feast. he ate enough of it, then went and made sure anya got into the CPC without him, and eventually ate a little more of it. i think we'll persevere with it, but i'll see if i can find anything else that will work and taste yummier to him.

yesterday we took him with us to celebrate DD's birthday and he discovered DD's cat, jackson's bowl. jackson never finishes his food, so punkin took pity on him and made sure jackson got into the CPC. unfortunately, jackson's bowl was full of dry crunchies. that took him up to 371 before i stopped testing last night and just figured we'd wait it out. he seems to have recovered now.

i wanted to share that i did hear back from Dr. Timian at CSU about punkin's increasing dose needs. she said that was not cause to be discouraged, that cats had taken as long as 19 months to go OTJ and we are only at 9.5months. *sigh* so on we go. he's at 9u now - a 3 dose flirt with 9.25 and a 30 brought us back down to 9.0u. still better than it would've been without the SRT.

 Oh boy punkin, that sure was thoughtful of you to help Jackson out so he could be a member of the CPC! Maggie said she may decide to visit one of the neighbors' kitties, too and see if she might help. Punkin sure recovered nicely.
Julie, you asked in my condo what I feed Maggie. I've been feeding Wellness Turkey sprinkled with the Pure Bites chicken breast dust. I just double checked, and if you click on Ann & Tess's ss link, you will see a link for Low Phosphorus foods and their values. Maybe try another one for punkin. Maggie didn't like any of the Merrick for some reason. Also, Tanya's website is a good resource for a lot of info on CRD.
Glad you got in touch with Dr. Timian at CSU, and it's encouraging news. Scritches to punkin.

Sorry to hear that Punkin is creeping up in dose. Paws crossed that it is only temporary. Nice kibble recovery though.

Tess has put a veto on the Merrick BG too. The best of bothe worlds that I've found is Nature's Variety Organic Raw Chicken., 4%carbs and 160 mg/100kcal phos. Evo 95% Chicken and Turkey and Friskies Special Diet Turkey & Giblets are good. The latter gets three tails up too, but it is 5% carbs!

     What! There is food that punkin will not eat?!? Must be really nasty stuff. Those crunchies, punkin, are not good for you, even if they taste heavenly. Paws crossed that the SRT continues to help my buddy punkin.

What a good "helper" Punkin is!! He wanted to help everyone be a member of the CPC. At least he's back into the blues. These contrabandista kitties!!

Re: 7/7 punkin amps 354 +7/150 +9.5/92

thanks for all the food tips! i've written down the details and will try those and see if we get a "3 tails up!" on any of them!

i've spent the afternoon reading Tanya's CKD site and related links - interesting that with a diabetic cat, some of the symptoms and labs that may look like kidney disease may be from the dehydration that exists in most diabetic cats. looking at his lab values, however, i think we'll still treat him as though he has the beginnings of CKD.

Oh Julie, look how nicely Punkin recovered from the contraband. Checkers is a kibble thief too. All you can do is wait it out.
I really hope you find something that he loves, that's better for him. Poor baby. It stinks when you can't have your favorite fud.

Oh Punkin, you're such a thoughful little dude for wanting to include more members in your CPC! You are the most inclusive kitty I've ever met ;-)
Glad to see he's back in the blues and hope he takes to his new food so he gain regain his title!

Re: 7/7 punkin amps 354 +7/150 +9.5/92

Just switching Tess to the lower phosphorus food really improved her renal numbers from 10-14-11 to 3-2-12. She's staying on the high side of normal, but we haven't had to resort to phosphorus blockers yet. Hopefully they continue to improve.

Another food on Tanya's list is the By Nature Organic line, I'm just not sure what the carb% is, nor one has gotten a good answer as far as I know, but we think it is about 2%. I haven't pursued it because no stores here carry it and I don't know if Tess will eat it.

Re: 7/7 punkin amps 354 +7/150 +9.5/92

Oh, Julie - How kind of Punkin to help finish off the kibble; glad he recovered nicely! I do hope you find a food that meets his needs AND he likes! I would think companies would make foods that are better all around, but what do I know? :YMSIGH:

Have a great night -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)
