Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE AMPS 357

Hi Michelle,

No dosing advice from me. I'm not up on your cat's situation.

I did want to add my 2 cents about the fructo test - it's a great test to diagnose diabetes - as it gives the average BG over a 2-4 week period. After diagnosis and continual home testing, it's an unneeded, unnecessary expense and stress on the cat and to tell you what? Something you already know because you are home testing.

If the vet asks to do it, ask the vet you don't feel it's necessary, but would be happy to oblige if they do the test for free! Let's see how fast the vet backs down!

What an adorable picture of Scrabble!! pinks are pretty but we would love to see some nice blues or greens instead Scrabble!
Big fll_moon Full Moon party for all the kitties tomorrow night...hope Scrabble can come ~ spread the word. Kitties just love to howl at the moon and par-tay! :-D

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE AMPS 357

i agree with hillary re the fructosamine. just have your vet run regular blood and urine tests in a few more months when you're ready to get another update on your cat's general health. if you're sharing your BG test data with your vet there's no need for the fructosamine.

you had a green on thursday and more blue on this dose so i'd stick to it a few more days to see what it can do. your higher numbers look like an overreaction to the nice lower numbers rather than insufficient insulin. he's doing really well, michelle. very nice to be seeing blues and greens so soon. :)

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE AMPS 357

Just stopping by to say Happy Saturday! You're doing great Michelle. Glad you enjoyed the show last night. Love Scrabble's new pic too (I think you changed earlier this week). No dosing advice from me...

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE AMPS 357

Thanks for weighing in everyone. Don't think we are gonna have any blues or greens today. +6 301, blah!!!! Glad to hear from all of you that he is doing well because lots of times I feel he is not. But what do I know, hahahah! I will mention that I don't want to do the test, maybe tell her I can't afford it right now. She seemed excited about doing a test though! Oh well.

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE PMPS 407

PMPS 407, ugh! Looks like it is not a good day for Scrabble, why all these rebounds? When will he stop this? I know no one can probably answer but just wondering! I hate the sugar dance!! :( The positive of today is Scrabble was in a good mood all day and seemed really happy!!

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE PMPS 407

Hey Michelle,
I can tell you what that fructo test will say. It will say that Scrabble is an unregulated diabetic kitty haha_smiley

Seriously, when I had a bunch of bloodwork done a bit ago, the vet said I should get one, and I said that I considered it useless because I home test. She did say that it was not as expensive if we ordered some sort of packaged bloodwork deal. Say the cost of the other tests were 150 and the fructo test could be added for just a bit more, but way less than if I got it separately. Because I was curious, I said hey sure why not, let's see what your fructo test says.

And you know what it said? Shadoe was an unregulated kitty with FD the number was 511 in a range of 140-320 haha_smiley When I asked her it told her that we did not already know, she had to admit it told us nothing at all.

Save your cash and get scrabble some new toys or something.

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE PMPS 407

the bouncing happens because before insulin was started he was likely in higher numbers for a while so his system got used to those numbers. at the beginning the lower number feels wrong to them so their liver pitches in to get glucose higher. once they start seeing more consistently low numbers, that feels more normal to them so their liver is less likely to overreact. it's very common in a newer diabetic.

get a midpoint today/tonight if you can and lets see which way he's trending. if you don't see a better number by next shot you could try another 0.25u increase but make sure you have high carb food in the house in case he goes low. if you don't have janet & binky's food charts handy you're safe in assuming any cat food with gravy in it is higher carb. if his numbers dropped too fast or went too low you could give him a taste of high carb food and test again in about 20 minutes to see if his drop is slowing or the number is better. if not, you give him another taste. if he did go too low you could drop the dose back to 1.25. but personally i'd wait another day to see how he does. you might want to get a few extra spot checks in this weekend to accumulate more data.

some cats have wonky numbers around full moon time. and some cats have higher numbers just before a break to lower numbers. so remember 407 is just one number and doesn't tell the whole story. gotta get more test data for that.

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE PMPS 407

Michelle,
Here's how I see the bouncing. In the beginning, what is right just feels very, very wrong.

Scrabble's used to those higher numbers; they just feel right, how it's supposed to be.
Then, you come along and give this insulin stuff- numbers come down, and Scrabble's insides say WHAT?? What's this? It feels wrong, and I need to make it right! numbers go up.

You may hear others mention LTS Liver Training School where Scrabble is currently studying and being trained not to bounce from good numbers.

As you watch Scrabble's numbers, you will see that bit by bit, Scrabble will stay a little bit longer in lower numbers and maybe those bounces won't be all the way up to the moon.

When Scrabble is ready to accept those lower numbers, you will see improvement.
Just remember that Scrabble is the boss, so what he says, goes. Get comfy and wait.

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE PMPS 407

It looks like you stuck with the current does. How about if we see how this cycle goes. If Scrabble is still on the upper floors after tonight's spot checks, an increase tomorrow looks good.

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE PMPS 407

I agree with Sienne, I have a feeling Scrabble might have hit some green yesterday and this is a bounce from that, but let's see what tonight's spot checks look like.

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE PMPS 407

just stopped in to say HI! And isn't bouncing fun. Well, stresses out us beans alot. I liked Gayle's assessment - that about sums it up. Eventually it will lessen. It takes time, as Mannie can tell you.

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE PMPS 407

I'm liking what Sienne and Libby said  I know I am a newbie and not going to give dose advice but I admit I was wondering if it was time for a dosecrease. ;-)

Re: 02/27/10 SCRABBLE PMPS 407

HI all +3 is 333, last check I can do before work. Do you think I should do a dosecrease in the am? to 1.5? I am off on Sunday and MOnday so I can monitor him pretty good in the next couple of days. Thanks for all your help!!!
