Good Morning All
We've got a nice low yellow (thanks Roni) start today. Breffis eaten with less than gusto, because he was more interested in the butter he smelled on the counter. Oy, that cat is a maniac for anything dairy. How can anyone smell cold almost tasteless butter.
Once that was out of sniffing range, he went back for seconds on the FF.

Vet appt. this afternoon. Time for kidney check, among other things.

We got good and bad news at vet today. Good is, his blood panel is a little better than last time.

BUN went down slightly from 52 to 46, since March..normal is 16-36
CREA is just barely normal, at 2.4.......norm is 0.8 to 2.4....last time it was 2.7

Bad news is, his disk has deteriorated a good deal. Ex-ray was ugly. Even my untrained eye could see that.

Because of everything I told him that's been going on this past weekend,
crying out when trying to climb, dilated pupils, bg numbers, other things not normal for him, doc believes that his climbing numbers is due to pain. He can see the picture of what the cat feels.
Even if I could afford it, surgery is not an option, due to where the spinal problem is.

We discussed pain medication again. He told me about the nsaid that is being used for cats now. ONSIOR
That is extremely hard on the kidneys, and according to their own website, the stomach also. So are (nsaids for humans)
Onsior is supposed to be a good pain killer, but for post surgery and for only a few days.

He is not keen on low levels of narcotics, such as bupe, for long term use.For anyone reading this, using bupe that way, understand.... That is HIS PERSONAL opinion.

So for now, I am just to give Checks bupe at my discretion, when I feel he needs it. What a weight on my shoulders.

Also, this weekend's pain was out of the ordinary. Doc thinks he probably hurt himself and pinched a nerve.
He got a shot of bupe at the clinic, because of everything they did to him.

Re: 8/8 Checkers pmps 358 vet report

(((Barb)))
I'm sorry that Checks is going through this. Is there any other vet you could consult with that may have expertise in pain management?

Re: 8/8 Checkers pmps 358 vet report

Barb, we are so sorry to hear of the condition of Checkers's disk. I hope that when the extra pain experienced over the weekend subsides, you will be able to manage it without a lot of problems. Perhaps a special bed would help Checkers. I believe that modern treatment for humans with disk problems is now leaning away from surgery. I don't think you would want to put Checks through back surgery in any event. We are sending him lots of less-pain vines this evening.

Hugs,

Ella & Rusty

p.s. Stu was a butter addict. Once I happened to glance at the butter on the table right before a dinner party to see a long tongue lick across the top of the butter stick!

Re: 8/8 Checkers pmps 358 vet report

I'm glad to hear the GOOD news for Checks, but I'm sorry is disk is doing worse. Sienne has a great idea: maybe look into a specialty clinic that would have experts in this sort of thing. Hopefully the more extreme pain he's been experiencing will subside...if he did injure himself a bit, there is great hope for that since the injury will heal.

Hugs to you and gentle hugs to sweet Checkers!!

Re: 8/8 Checkers pmps 358 vet report

sorry to hear about Checkers bad back, I can totally sympathize. Since you've done the accupuncture route, I assume you've done chiro with him too????

hoping he feels a bit better soon and is up for a gentle romp with Rupert.

Maybe those flat yellow numbers were due to the yellow butter!!!! his fav?!!

Re: 8/8 Checkers pmps 358 vet report

Sienne, I live in a rural area. I know of no other clinic within my driving distance that would be better than this clinic.
They have many partners, who consult with one another. I always talk of Dr Dave, because he's the one who speaks to me, like I have a brain. I'm not a bumbling idiot around him. My point was, it's not a one-man clinic.

I think Checks is feeling good right now. He's more active than he has been, and back to his sweet self, rubbing his face on mine.
His numbers are dropping too.

Ella, I would not put Checkers through spinal surgery, because I could never know if he was pain free afterwards.

I don't mean to imply that he is in constant pain. He is not. When he is playing , racing up and down the hallway, rolling around in a big grey ball, with Clancy, I know he feels good. :-D

His pain is sporadic....as far as I know.

Re: 8/8 Checkers pmps 358 vet report

I feel for you barb ... I know how much seeing checkers in pain bothers you .. heck, it bothers all of us when our kitties, or anyone's kitties on here are not feeling good ..

Seeing another vet is always a good idea, but I know you live far out in the country and vets are not flocking to your area ..

I hope that the few doses of bupe get checkers through this rough patch and that hopefully his pain will be mild for a good long time ..

Give checkers light scritches from us ... :YMHUG:

(((Barb & Checkers)))
Well, great work on the good news part of the vet visit. That is encouraging to see the numbers improve....
but the bad news is hard to deal with...
I feel so bad that he experiences pain like that Barb, but it is good that he is active sometimes too. That is good that you will have the Bupe to give him when you think he needs it.
Sending lots of love to you both...and hugs too....I hope what Devon hopes for too: that he will only have mild pain that you can both handle together for a good long time.... :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Barb, I wasn't online much late afternoon and missed your update Vetty visit on Checkers. So sorry his disk has further deteriorated. Sending vines and prayers for Checkers and you.
