Hi Simke,

I am too new to offer advice, but don't think you need to panic. I know, easier said than done. Do you have some high carb food, like FF gravy, and karo syrup in the house? Don't think you need them yet, but I always keep some just in case. I am sure someone with more experience will answer your 911 soon! I would probably try to test again in 30 minutes.

You are right on top of things!!

A 61 (sorry -- I needed to "translate") is fine. However, I would give some medium carb food to see if you can get Simke's numbers to flatten out and then re-test at +4.5.

You might want to take a look at the How to Handle Low Numbers post so you have a sense of what you'll need to do with regard to testing and feeding. The drop between your AMPS and +2 tells you that this was going to be an active cycle.

Also, could you edit your subject line so we can keep track of how Simke's doing? If you don't mind, could you change it to:

Please give Simke some HC food -- a teaspoon or two -- and retest in no more than 30 min. And please, post in US numbers.

Sienne's right. You don't want Simke to be dropping any further. The idea is to try and get a nice flat curve in, or as flat a curve as possible. It is quite possible, though, that when you give Simke some HC food (the amount that Sienne suggested) that you'll see a bounce. It's normal. Quite normal, in fact, and it'll go away over time. How much time will depend on the kitty. ECID (every cat is differnt).

The maple syrup will raise him rather quickly due to the sugar content in it, and I'm not sure how it affects diabetic cats as apposed to Karo syrup. How long ago did you test?

Chances are you're not going to see a big bounce from one feeding of HC. I would, however, encourage you to stick with either a gravy-based food or adding a few drops of syrup to LC food. Using dry treats -- or any dry food -- takes a while for the effects to kick in and it takes unduly long for the effects to wear off. The syrup is much quicker. The feeding and testing every 30 min. will allow you to steer Simke's numbers into an above 50 range and keep him safe. Here's the post I forgot to link earlier.

Please change your subject line to the format I suggested earlier and please use US numbers. Most people here won't do the multiplication.

Sienne has to pop off the board a bit and asked me to stay with you until Simke is up a bit more.

As she said, please test again 30 mins after the last time you fed and post his number. I will be watching for it. You're doing great.

I will remind you again later, but this has earned him a dose reduction.

Yes....two more tsp of HC gravy and retest in 30 mins. I would have liked to see a bigger bump up than that.

You want to keep doing this until he is in the 50s. We call it lather, rinse, repeat.

You can insert 2 #s in the same cell on the SS. What a lot of people on here do is, for an example, input say 65 +4, (hit Enter), and then 72 +4.5 . That way there will be 2 #s at 2 different times in the same cell, and it would avert confusion on when your test times were taken. Plus, you can also add the information in the remarks part of the SS to the far right so that it can viewed up quickly, also. Just a thought, and I hope that makes sense.

ok he was none responsive so panicked and gave him more maple syrup then seemed to wake up he is now 41 going to give him some cat food with gravy

Was he soundly asleep or was he exhibiting hypo symptoms....glazed eyes, change in breathing, etc?

Smart thinking to give him the syrup. He's still too low for as much HC as he's had so please add some more syrup to the gravy. Retest in another 30.

Do you think he's ok now? Are you?

But when I panicked I rubbed some on his gums, shall I do anything else now he walks normally,but before when he had BG he was hungry

Can you syringe it into him? If you can't syringe it, rub more syrup on his gums.

You could also take some HC food and rub it on the roof of his mouth as long as you know he will not bite you and he is acting normally ...if he's still out of it or wobbly, don't put your fingers in his mouth except to rub some syrup on his gums.

Please let me know if you are able to do any of this.

He was curled over which I thought was weird (looked dead), but normal breathing eyes rolled back, but when I touched him he did nothing so I ran to get syrup and starting rubbinbg it on his gums then he seemed to wake up and made me feel crazy as he seemed ok, but I rubbed some more on to be sure.

No...that does not sound good. Keep giving him syrup or food if you can. Retest in 30.

yes when I leave him alone, he rolls over and looks very strange (not his usual way of lying down). breathing normal though, when I syringed syyrup in he got up and looks ok. Gave him 100 units maple syrup

How far away is your ER? If he is not acting normal when you move away from him and is not responding to all this syrup, I think you need to get him to the ER...or to your vet...as sson as possible. He's pretty low to be this late in the cycle with this much syrup.

Good....we also need to get a test soon.

I would feel better if you can have his vet check him out soon...it concerns me that he was nonresponsive and wobbly. We would not typically see a clinical hypo in a cat at 41 but every cat is different. If he was having a clinical hypo, then you will need to be extra careful to keep him out of the 40s in the future.

In addition, cats that have had a clinical hypo tend to be more insulin sensitive for a time. It's going to be important to watch his numbers and him carefully.

That was right after he ate, right? If so, let's get another test 30 mins after he ate. Ok? I just wanted to see if we were headed in the right direction.

Is he still acting ok? If he does what he did before, I have to stress that he needs to go to the ER.

His SS is very different on numbers and times then his condo. Is the below correct? We can fix the SS later but I just need to be sure I know where you actually are in the cycle...it makes a difference.

Unfortunately I dropped the meter in the water bowl. :( He is looking much better sitting up drinking water. Just sent someone to buy me another meter. So will test again asap

You probably need a laugh about now so I will tell you when we were new members and I had been up ALL night testing, instead of putting her rice sock in the microwave to warm it for her AMPS test, I put the meter in the microwave. It was only in there 15 seconds but it melted. And stunk to high heaven. I had to run out to the 24 hour pharmacy and get another meter so I could test and shoot. That's when I learned to have a backup meter (I have two now ;-) :lol: )

Funny thing we are running a fundraiser for a dog rescue today and have hundreds of people here and keep running away to check the cat augh!!! Worried about tomorrow have an important meeting at 1pm but don't feel I can leave him, this is crazy stressful. also left my lantus on the counter last night although at least I know it still works.

He has been so high all week, why do you think he is so low

1) I gave him a more generous 1 as I could clearly see the line with a tiny bit of fluid below it (before I was right on it)

2) his antibiotics are working and clearing up some infection
